Staying to watch your team pull off a miraculous comeback feels like a double victory.  The team won on the field, and you won for deciding against beating the traffic and sticking around to the not-so-bitter end!

thoughts on what cleveland can / should do this offseason?  with detroit arming, the royals poised to call up a number of their best prospects, and bieber / ramirez both probably unwilling to accept below-market extensions, is their best move to copy minnesota and sell high to invest in their next window?  and who would have the best offers for bieber / ramirez if either hit the market?
Mark P
9:35
It depends (as always) on what the front office is allowed to spend, but I don't think Cleveland is in bad shape.  If their pitching staff isn't ravaged by injuries, they're probably still right in the playoff mix, so it's not like they're too far away from contending.

Between Franmil, Rosario, and Straw, the Guardians may have found a few answers to their position player needs already.  They do need to figure out Rosario's position and still add one more veteran outfielder, plus I'm of the opinion that they should overhaul their catching mix

You're Ross Akins (hypothetically). Which is your priority signing? Ray or Semien?
Mark P

Which player should the Jays prioritize signing, if only one?

Marcus Semien (43.7% | 107 votes)

Robbie Ray (56.3% | 138 votes)

(Yes, I realize we had this same poll in last week's chat.  I'm just interested in seeing if the numbers have changed.)

You mentioned bad contract swaps . Didi G or Segura bring a LF or CF with lead off potential ?
Mark P
9:41
Segura isn't a bad contract in my books.  Versatile defender, solid above-average hitter.  He's the one I'd keep if I'm the Phillies, though Didi's problems this season might have been due to injury

Did you see that walk off slam for the Brewers game?
Mark P
9:42
Great finish, and a real crushing loss for the Cardinals.  Not a loss they could afford in such a tight playoff race.

Mark: Good Evening. Do you think public scrutiny will force the Marlins to pay for an out of a box free agent, someone like Correa?
Mark P
9:44
Rojas might be one small impediment, since the Marlins love the guy and want to re-sign him again.  That said, Rojas could also switch positions to accommodate someone like a Correa
9:45
It remains to be seen if the Marlins are quite ready to spend, and until they actually splurge on a big deal, we shouldn't pencil them in for such a scenario.  Adding a big bat or two seems like a must, given that the Marlins have tons of young pitching and might already be mostly set in that department

The Reds are just going to break my heart again aren’t they
Mark P
9:47
"It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall all alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops.”

What has happened to the A’s? Is it possible that Bob Melvin and the coaching staff make it out unscathed at season’s end? Is it part of the low key media environment the A’s play in this has not blown up?
Mark P
9:48
I wouldn't count the A's out yet.  It seems like about every team in the AL race has had a stretch of 2-3 weeks where they play like garbage, their fans entirely write them off, and then the team starts winning again

Do the Tigers target a SP this year for a multi-year stay, not just a one-season rental?
Mark P
9:51
Adding a veteran to that mostly-young group would be a nice move for Detroit.  Similar to what i said about the Padres earlier, there is value in just landing a guy to eat innings, posting an ERA (hopefully) in the 3.80-4.10 range, and be a normal starting pitcher without worrying about innings limits.
Obviously it's easier said than done to find such a pitcher, of course

So who wrote/said the baseball breaks your heart quote please?
Mark P

Me, I came up with it just now.

Or, it may have been former commissioner Bart Giamatti.

Do you think Trevor Story gets a 1 year contract ala Marcus Semien, or do you think he lands a huge multi-year deal? Thanks.
Mark P
9:55
Story definitely looks to be a good candidate for a Semien-esque pillow contract, since it seems like this whole weird season in Colorado really impacted him.

I wonder if his good friend Nolan has been selling him on the idea of spending that one year in St. Louis.

Can you make an educated guess about Freddie Freeman's contract? Also, from a scale of 1 to 10, how likely he will stay with the Braves?
Mark P
9:57
The general feeling for months has been that Freeman will end up signing something a bit above Goldschmidt's deal with the Cardinals, though how much "a bit" entails is likely up for interpretation between Braves management and Freeman's agents.

I would still put his return to Atlanta at no less than an 8/10.  It is a little odd that no extension has yet been reached, but ultimately I think Freeman stays put.

Since the Lindor extension has not technically started what are the odds the mets could void the contract due to lack of performance? I know these situations can be tricky but seeing as the contract has not started yet is there any way to stop it before it starts?
Mark P
9:58
Zero chance of that happening

Mariners back 3 games of the wild card now with like 20 games to play can they pull with in Boston n New York to grab one of the WC spots?
Mark P
10:00
As a Jays fan, I'm hoping my own team grabs a wild card spot, but Seattle definitely still has a shot.  Against all odds, they have just continued to hang around the race and they keep grinding out wins.  The M's have a good chunk of their schedule left against the A's, Red Sox, and Astros, so stay tuned

Do you believe the A's will fire Melvin for the current collapse?
Mark P
10:01
I'm not sure how the A's slump (and it's just a slump for now, not a "collapse") is necessarily Melvin's fault

10:01
How do you think teams will value draft picks in trades if they are part of the new CBA? Will it be similar to the NFL where a 2nd and 3rd rounder net a starting player?
Mark P
10:02
It'll depend on the team and the situation, but I would expect that clubs will still put a big valuation on their picks.  Somewhere, some front office type has pulled a Jimmy Johnson and put together their own draft pick value chart in preparation for what might happen if teams are allowed to trade picks

Salvy Perez seems to have benefitted from the home run derby. Has that happened before?
Mark P
10:05
This very season, Juan Soto's slugging numbers (if not his HR totals) went up dramatically since he participated in the Derby

We're almost at the two-hour mark, so let's put a pin in this one.  Thanks for all the questions, and we'll be back with another chat next weekend!
