Mark P

Welcome to the weekend chat!  With just over two weeks left in the regular season, there's plenty to discuss.
Luis Sojo
10:59
Does Gleyber Torres have any trade value this offseason? What level of pitching could he bring back?
Mark P
11:01
Quite a few teams would be interested in a player who is still young, already has a couple of big power years under his belt, and is controlled through 2024.  I'm sure a lot of teams figure they can either fix Torres at the plate, or maybe just think he needs a change of scenery.

The Yankees could land a similarly young and controllable arm in a Gleyber trade
Cueto
11:02
Will I opt into my contract for next year?
Mark P
11:03
Cueto has a club option for 2022, so it'll be the Giants' call and not his own
Yordan Enthusiast
11:03
Is it a hot take to say Yordan is better than JD Martinez and Giancarlo Stanton especially now since hes getting reps at 1st.
Mark P
11:04
"Better" is a subjective term since obviously those other guys have much longer track records.  But Alvarez clearly is a heck of a hitter, and perhaps most importantly, he has been able to stay healthy.
Dallas
11:05
Billy Beane is never leaving Oakland, right?
Mark P
11:06
For another baseball job, it's doubtful.  But leaving the A's in general is a possibility, since Beane would have done so if his RedBall company had completed that merger with the Red Sox last year
MVP Chatter
11:06
Hi Mark hope all is well! Shohei is AL MVP even if Vladdy wins a Triple Crown, right? Either way kudos to great seasons for both.
Mark P
11:06
Even though I'm a Jays fan, Ohtani's season is just too special to ignore.  But, this is a natural poll topic...
11:07
Who would get your AL MVP?

Shohei Ohtani (60.6% | 372 votes)

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (39.4% | 242 votes)

Marquez
11:08
Could Whitley and some lesser prospects be enough to entice the Rockies to sell on Marquez?
Mark P
11:08
Forrest Whitley?  I doubt it, his stock has dropped a lot over the last couple of years.
Tim
11:09
Robbie ray has an erratic pitching history.  Will that affect his next contract
Mark P
11:11
2020 was his only truly bad season, and teams might write that year off entirely due to the pandemic circumstances (and because of how Ray has righted the ship so well this year).

While Ray wasn't exactly a top-flight starter prior to 2020, he was still a solid pitcher overall in Arizona, if inconsistent.

We have massive flexibility payroll wise and prospect trading wise.   Who do you see us targeting in free agency, and who could you see us packaging some prospects for??
Mark P
11:13
Actually, I think Trader Jerry might be more prone to using that payroll space in trades rather than necessarily on top-tier free agents.  Like, the Mariners offer to take a high-salary player off another team's books, in exchange for just a couple of low-level prospects
MVP Poll!
11:13
Ohtani or Vlad? Tatis or Harper?
Mark P
11:13
Hey, if one poll wasn't enough....
11:14
Who would get your NL MVP vote?

Bryce Harper (49.9% | 260 votes)

Fernando Tatis Jr. (50.1% | 261 votes)

G’day from down under, wondering your thoughts on if they will look at a new play off format, in both leagues the ALE and the NLW could have 3 teams making it, the WC winner playing the other team from that division, do you think they’ll address this or am I thinking it’s an issue when it’s not?
Mark P
11:17
I would suspect that next CBA will tweak the postseason format, since the owners would love to have more playoff games to offer TV networks.  But as to the issue of lots of teams from one division making it....some years, some divisions are just stronger than others.
James Calvin Rollins
11:18
Should have won more than 4 gold gloves and was an MVP. WS Champ, 2 Penant Winners. Unique power/speed combo. Am I a HOFer?
Mark P
11:18
Rollins doesn't make my HOF cut, no.  Still an outstanding career.
Dodgers
11:18
Since when has Castillo been able to K 10??
Mark P
11:19
You're only just now realizing that Luis Castillo is a good pitcher?
Angels
11:20
Have Marsh and Adell done enough to be on the opening day roster in 2022 so we can just focus on pitching and a middle IF this offseason?
Mark P
11:20
I'd be stunned if either weren't on the Opening Day roster (barring an injury or trade).
Joshua
11:22
With the emergence of Lane Thomas, could you see the Nats dealing Victor Robles this offseason? He seems he'd be a good fit for a team like the Rockies. What type of return do you think the Nats could get for him? Thanks.
Mark P
11:23
I would tend to think that the Nationals will hang onto Robles.  Still so much youth and potential, even if his hitting numbers have been quite rough.
Trading him now is a bit of a sell-low move as well
Can O Cobb
11:24
Does Alex Cobb get a decent contract? He's actually been good when healthy
Mark P
11:24
A two-year deal in the $20-$25MM range seems pretty feasible, or maybe a one-year deal with a higher AAV.

11:25
Do you think Tatis/Harper MVP vote comes down to who makes the playoffs?
Mark P
11:26
In theory it shouldn't, considering the top two AL MVP contenders might both come from non-playoff teams
Yadi
11:26
Do you see the Cardinals spending a lot in free agency for my last season?  Maybe attempt to get Story or quality starting pitchers?
Mark P
11:28
Beyond re-signing Wainwright at a nice raise, the Cards should have the means (a lot of money coming off the books) and the willingness to make a big splash.  A top-tier arm would really help out the rotation and maybe make it into one of the better staff's in the league, if Waino continues his revival and Flaherty is back healthy.
Paul
11:28
Would you like to see mlb adopt the nba playoffs system
Mark P
11:29
No.  16 playoff teams was ok last year due to the weird shortened season, but the 162-game schedule should be more meaningful.
