How is it that Harper and Tatis, Guererro and Ohtani, are the only contenders for MVP in their respective leagues?
Mark P
11:30
I would imagine the MVPs will come from that group of four, but the likes of Trea Turner or Marcus Semien will get some votes.
Tigers
11:31
Do the Tigers make the big splash they’ve said they would on one of the big FA SSs this off-season or do they believe that Kreidler’’s the long term answer?  The guy came out of nowhere and has torn it up at every level this year.
Mark P
11:32
Kreidler is a nice story and an interesting prospect, but he shouldn't be enough to stand in the way of Detroit signing a Correa or a Semien
Ruban Amaro
11:33
Is it looks like no one wants to second national league wild card spot, who wins by default?
Mark P
11:33
To quote Homer Simpson, the two sweetest words in the English language.....De Fault!

I think it'll be St. Louis

What's today's jam man?
Mark P
11:34
at the moment, Phoebe Bridgers' cover of "Teenage Dirtbag"
Cleveland Fan
11:35
I have a hard time with the Pirates saying they won’t trade Reynolds. They are years away from competing, so holding him does nothing for them. That said, Cleveland desperately needs an impact OF. What offer could you see Cleveland making that actually makes the Pirates pull the trigger? Jones, Gimenez, Espino a good start?
Mark P
11:37
That would get the Pirates' attention, but I think another team would be able to top it if Reynolds really was made available.

To your larger point, I do agree that Reynolds might not really be "untouchable."  Obviously the Bucs would move him if another team made a gigantic offer, but if the offer is anything less than gigantic, it'll be a non-starter

Mickey moniak a bust?
Mark P
11:39
He's still only 23, and 2020 is essentially a lost year of development thanks to the pandemic.

But still, the Phillies can't feel great that Moniak has yet to have a true standout year in any of his five minor league seasons.

With the emergence of Sosa, are the Cards still in play for Story or Simien this off season, or possibly Correa?
Mark P
11:42
Like I noted in the Tigers answer earlier, Sosa's presence (or DeJong's presence) shouldn't stop the Cardinals from going after a top-tier shortstop.

One option is dealing DeJong, signing a shortstop, and then having Edman and Sosa splitting time at second base and being all-purpose utilitymen

How does Baurer's suspension affect the Dodger payroll tax?
Mark P
11:46
He hasn't been suspended yet, as Bauer is still being paid during his administrative leave.  If (or when) Bauer is suspended by MLB, the Dodgers wouldn't owe him any money for the duration of that suspension, and I believe that money also comes off the Dodgers' luxury tax bill
Keep in mind, the luxury tax system could also change this winter in the next CBA

11:47
Is it time for Will Smith to be demoted from the closer roll and install Rodriguez to finish out the game?
Mark P
11:48
Smith has been pretty solid overall, while Rodriguez has a nice ERA in Atlanta but his peripherals are very dodgy.

If I'm the Braves, I'm sticking with Smith for now
Nelso Cruz
11:49
Should I go back to Minnesota next season?
Mark P
11:50
If the Twins offer enough money and Cruz feels Minnesota can rebound into contention, sure.

However, Cruz's market might open up considerably if the NL adopts the designated hitter.

Is Willy Adames going to return to plausibly 100%...soon?  I've heard < 100% is all, for 2021 at least
Mark P
11:51
Adames is expected back from the IL on Monday
Jays fan
11:52
What’s wrong with Ryu? For the most part he hasn’t been very good lately.
Mark P
11:53
I think he's hurt.  He left his start against the Yankees with some mild forearm soreness that apparently wasn't a big deal, except Ryu has been hit hard in his two subsequent outings.
Not that correlation is necessary causation, but it's a pretty big red flag.

11:54
If the mariners decline kikuchi's 4 year team option and kikuchi declines his 1 year player option, can the mariners give him a qualifying offer?
Mark P
11:55
They can, but I doubt they would
Still a Giants fan
11:55
Some friends of mine say both Brandon Crawford and Tim Lincecum are hall of famers. Now I love those guys, especially Timmy. But no way, right?
Mark P
11:56
Your friends are pretty optimistic.  Crawford and Lincecum have had excellent careers, but they're not HOFers in my view.
Friedman
11:57
Do the Dodgers look to move Bellinger? I love him but he is lost at the plate and makes close to $20M, we should play Chris Taylor in CF in the playoffs if AJ is healthy to play left.
Mark P
11:59
It would definitely be a sell-low situation, but I can see the Dodgers testing Bellinger's trade market this winter, just to see what they can land for him.  Bellinger is another player that would certainly draw interest based on track record.

Considering I gave a similar answer for Gleyber Torres earlier, let the Gleyber-for-Bellinger trade questions begin!
Giants Fan
12:01
Do the Giants sign Kris Bryant this offseason? If so, could you the Giants being active in the FA market or trade market for an OF like B. Harper?
Mark P
12:01
Harper isn't being dealt, but the Giants definitely have the payroll space to go after pretty much any big-name trade candidate or free agent they wish
Jeff W
12:02
Who are the best most/interesting upcoming FAs who cannot receive a QO?
Mark P
12:04
MLBTR head honcho Tim Dierkes recently published the full list of every player who has ever received a qualifying offer: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/08/active-mlb-players-who-have-rec...

Several notable free agents (i.e. Scherzer, Stroman, Cruz, Greinke) are on that list, and a player cannot be issued a qualifying offer more than once.  As well, a player can't be issued a QO if he was traded during the season, so that eliminates guys like Baez or Bryant
Andrew Friedman
12:05
Would I really make drastic changes to the roster if my team loses in a one-game wild card series?
Mark P
12:06
(Friedman = Dodgers president of baseball ops)

I think we've seen enough of how Friedman works to know that he isn't prone to big overhauls all at once.  Not that he's had to make such drastic moves, of course, since the Dodgers' core is so strong.
Cashman
12:07
Gleyber Torres and other assorted prospects for Chapman/Olson. Who says no?
Mark P
12:07
BOTH of Chapman and Olson?  That will have to be quite the assortment.
