At the risk of interrupting some Sunday dinners, it's the Sunday baseball chat!  Lots to discuss with so much of the playoff picture still undecided
Sox Fan

What moves do you see the White Sox making this off-season? Can’t be happy with the 2B play since the trade deadline. Who are some options?
Mark P
6:50
Chicago fans would love to imagine a Marcus Semien reunion, but I tend to think he'll go to a team that will let him play shortstop.  (Or he'll stay as the Jays' second baseman.)

Guys like Villar, Solano, or Harrison might not be the most headline-grabbing names, but they're good veterans who aren't overly pricey, and they can help in at least a part-time capacity

Bryce Harper has to be NL MVP favorite right? Hes had best year of anyone in league
Mark P
6:52
Harper helping keep the Phillies in the playoff race will help him for narrative purposes, since that's a better "story" than Soto tearing it up for an also-ran, or Tatis tearing it up for a team that utterly collapsed.  The numbers are close enough between those three that Harper playing for a contender could clinch it for him
Mets fan
6:52
Is everything going to be ok?  What encouraging things can you say to me?  What a terrible collapse.
Mark P
6:53
The hope is that the new president of baseball operations is allowed to basically clean house.  I realize Alderson will still be there and Cohen has been a part of the ownership picture for a long time, but the new PoBO should be allowed to bring in his/her own people and make a clean break from this era of Mets baseball
Hits Like Rays
6:54
The Rays seem committed to keeping Wander Franco at SS for as long as he can physically handle the position.  With Brandon Lowe entrenched as 2B, where does that leave the rest of the Rays middle infield depth (Joey Wendle, Taylor Walls, Vidal Brujan)?
Mark P
6:55
Considering the Rays have an eye towards trading anyone making significant money, would it even be a real shock if Lowe was dealt this offseason?  So "entrenched" is never necessarily the case in Tampa.

As always, the Rays will mix and match guys between second and third or maybe in the outfield.  My guess is that one of Walls or Brujan would be traded, though the Rays love having as much young depth as possible on hand.
Trevor Story

Do I end up in St. Louis? If so, who do they trade to get me?
Mark P
6:57
Story's a free agent, so no trade necessary

Ownership has money. Avila has argued we’re going for 2022 playoffs. What’s the one signing that puts Detroit over the top?
Mark P
6:58
It'll take more than one single player, obviously.  The White Sox will still be good, the Twins and Guardians will almost certainly be improved, and KC might yet take a step forward.

The Tigers do have the money and the apparent desire, however, to land at least two big-ticket free agents or trade targets.

Does Choi play 1B for Rays next year?
Mark P
6:59
Barring a trade, he'll surely be back in another platoon role

Hah, sorry. To clarify, I meant “if there was only one big signing, who do you get?” Obviously there’s more than 1 hole on that club. But who should be the top priority?
Mark P
7:00
In an offseason with so many big shortstops available, and a need for immediate shortstop help....well, that seems like the likeliest avenue.
Mike
7:01
how can MLB continue with such an unbalanced schedule and have wild card available based on such different schedules?
Mark P
7:02
A more balanced schedule would definitely help from a fairness standpoint, and I would argue from a fan interest standpoint as well.

If you feel differently, feel free to argue the opposite in a chat question.  But I get tired of seeing the same four opponents 76 times per season.

What can the Mariners get for Evan White this off season.
Mark P
7:03
Considering he has barely hit at the MLB level and is coming off hip surgery, not much.
Padres letdown in '22
7:04
Will the padres regress next year further due to tight budget and lack of organizational depth, not to mention the dodgers and the giants stocking up in the off-season with abundant cap space (before the luxury tax obligations take hold)?
Mark P
7:05
The Padres probably suspected they'd have to deal with the Giants as contenders in 2022.....but not this year, and certainly the Padres hoped they'd have at least a postseason appearance (or maybe a WS trophy) banked before they had to fend off both of the NL West powers.

There's really no way to sugarcoat what a disaster of a season this has been for the Padres.  There aren't a ton of easy fixes, apart from just hoping that they aren't crushed by pitching injuries again.
Balance
7:06
Maybe the Balance should come from a divisional shake up. Not less games against you division. You need to win your division to deserve not to play in a WC game.
Mark P
7:06
As a Jays fan, I would also welcome not sharing a division with the Rays, Yankees, and Red Sox.  :)

Do you foresee a team in Las Vegas in the near future? Considering the success of the NHL and NFL, how long can MLB and the NBA not consider it?
Mark P
7:07
I think the A's are going be in Las Vegas within the next five years, tops.
Joshua
7:08
Patrick Corbin and Jackson Rutledge to the Angels for Justin Upton…..who says no? Thanks.
Mark P
7:09
Upton has a no-trade clause, and I believe it has been reported in the past that he wants to remain close to his home on the west coast.  So, he isn't likely to agree to a move to D.C.
Grayson
7:10
Do you think some teams will shy away from Correa in FA due to the way he handled the Astros' scandal aftermath?
Mark P
7:10
I strongly doubt it.  The Astros scandal didn't stop Springer from landing a big payday in free agency.
Mike Shildt
7:10
Is my job in jeopardy this off-season?
Mark P
7:11
Two weeks ago I would've said quite possibly.
16 wins later, Shildt seems pretty safe to me.
Guardian

Cleveland cut their salary more than anyone the last few years. Is it reasonable to hope they actually go for a major OF add like Schwarber? Or a trade for K. Marte or B. Reynolds? They have the farm to pull off any trade, and the savings to add a 15 million a year kind of player. This year was a lineup of AAAA players that shouldn’t be starting.
Mark P
7:13
I was actually wondering if ownership might be willing to make a splash in the "name change year" by making a decently-sized FA signing.  Schwarber would be a really good fit as someone who is a nice upgrade for Cleveland's lineup, but still won't cost as much as a true upper-echelon free agent
Farhan Zaidi
7:15
How many of my assistants am I going to lose during this off-season? Example, am I losing GM Scott Harris for a promotion?
Mark P
7:16
Zaidi = Giants president of baseball operations

Scott Harris will or should be getting a lot of attention from teams looking to make a front office change.
Shoeless Joe

It seems the the idea of a split Tampa /Montreal schedule is still floating around and now its being said both loçations  would need new stadiums. I was under the impression a new stadium would solve all of Tampa's problems. So what's the point?
Mark P
7:18
I agree that not much seems to make sense about this Tampa/Montreal idea.  There seems to be too many logistical issues to make it work.
7:19
Two cities "sharing" a team might be feasible if the cities were closer to each other or, you know, in the same country or something.
