Mr Met
9:07
Do you think the Mets could have used Wheeler, Matz, Flexen, Sewald, d'Arnaud, Robles, Plawecki, Rosario or Justin Turner 2021? What is going on? Why am I watching so many guys deveolped by the Mets have success other places?
Mark P
9:08
It's not like the Mets haven't had a few guys who blossomed upon coming to New York, but you're right, it seems like maximizing talent is one of the chief problems (of many) facing the Mets in recent years.
That's the frustration for Mets fans....this team always has talent, but rarely does it all come together at once, if at all

”Philosophical differences”. Is that GM talk for we want you to fire a coach or two?
Mark P
9:09
Maybe Mozeliak is a big Plato guy and Shildt strongly favors Kant?
Eduardo Escobar
9:10
What kind of market am I looking at? Also, what teams would be interested in me? Tigers? Mariners? Marlins?
Mark P
9:12
Escobar has one of the under-the-radar largest markets of any free agent.  He can still hit, he can play second or third base (or some first base), and he won't be overly expensive.  Any number of contenders could look at him as a Plan B if they can't land a bigger infielder, and any number of pseudo-contenders could use him as an upgrade.

As to that guy's Mets ones who got away question every team could play that game.  Yanks have traded/let go a million valuable bullpen guys last 5 years.
Mark P
9:13
Very true.  Unless your team ended up with a championship despite "the one that got away," missing out a player who broke out elsewhere always stands out in the memory.

Will I get that Buxton extension done this winter, or will I let someone else get it done next winter?
Mark P
9:16
Buxton is such a difficult extension case, since if you're the Twins, how can you feel great about committing a lot of money to a player who has so much trouble staying healthy?  And if you're Buxton, you might want to lock in some money now because of that injury history, but with free agency only a year away, betting on yourself to finally stay healthy must seem so tempting.
I tend to think an extension isn't happening.  Too many X-factors to consider.

Is joe Espada an automatic to be the cardinals next manager? He has a pretty long history with Molina and analytics.
Mark P
9:19
Espada would be an interesting hire, he's often mentioned as future manager and he has come close to being hired in the past.
World Series
9:20
What do you think is the most likely World Series matchup?
Mark P
9:20
Boston vs. Los Angeles

What's the market on Kwang-Hyun Kim? Is he going back to Korea, or does someone give him a deal? From the outside, his stats look good for at least a #4 in many rotations.
Mark P
9:23
No word on whether or not Kim is looking to remain in MLB, but assuming he stays here, he'll get some looks. His advanced metrics aren't great, however, so between those numbers and his injuries, a two-year contract might be his ceiling.

Who's the next up-and-coming 2-way player to watch?
Mark P
9:24
"ME!" -- Alex Verdugo
Pete
9:25
Having already shelled out huge money for Harper, Wheeler and Realmuto and nary a playoff appearance to show for it, does John Middleton approve a nine-figure deal for a SS?
Mark P
9:26
Given how the Phillies' big signings all seem to be working out, it can't hurt?  Luxury tax schmuxry tax!
Yadi
9:26
I know managing with analytics is more confusing than it was 45 years ago but should he be considered for cards manager? And why not hold on to Schildt for one more year and then hire yadi to manage for 2023 (assuming he wants to do it)?
Mark P
9:28
Whatever the Cardinals' issue was with Shildt, it was clear they felt a change was necessary and it had to be made immediately, no more waiting around another year.

The idea of a player/manager is cool, but I'm not sure a catcher (with everything else on his plate for any given game) is the ideal pick for such a role, if it could even be done properly in modern baseball
FA Destinations
9:28
What Free Agents have specified where they want to go geographically or team wise, ruling out teams?
Mark P
9:30
The big majority of free agents specifically don't do this, since they don't want to rule anyone out.  Their agents or some teams might leak that information for strategic purposes, but you will rarely ever hear a player say anything beyond a generic "I've heard it's a good place to play, the fans are great, we'll see" when asked about any hypothetical destination

Could Rickey steal 100 bases w current rules?
Mark P
9:30
I wouldn't rule Rickey out of anything
Doug
9:31
How about a prospect for prospect deal. Presuming sox resign Schwarber, Casas for Bart. Helps both clubs.
Mark P
9:32
Firstly, prospect-for-prospect deals are quite rare.  Secondly, the Giants wouldn't do that since a top catching prospect has far more value than a top first base prospect.

This chat has surpassed the two-hour mark, or the time it took Odorizzi to get warmed up today.  Thanks for all the questions, back next weekend!
