Two chats for the price of one this weekend!  I figured that since I missed a couple of chats during the season due to breaking news, it's makeup time.
Cleveland 4 Life

I was reported that Cleveland wants to get a deal done for a stud OF by November 19th and they have had discussions with teams on some significant players. Who do you see them potentially targeting via trade?
Mark P
8:53
Some context on that report: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/10/al-notes-mariners-blue-jays-her...

Basically, Cleveland would like to solve its 40-man roster crunch and its outfield need in one move, by dealing some excess players to land an everyday-type player.  Whether other teams will be so accommodating in trade talks (knowing the Guardians are in that crunch) remains to be seen.
8:55
In general, I wonder if Cleveland could be targeting arb-eligible players who might be (if not strict non-tender candidates) available by teams looking to save some money or create some roster space of their own.  Purely my speculation here, but I wonder if Cleveland has had any talks with the Giants about Yaz, Dickerson, or Slater
Baseball

Who do you think will end up in The World Series?
Mark P
8:56
Boston seems to be riding a "team of destiny" wave, so I'll pick Red Sox over the Dodgers

Do you see the Jays signing Matz, everyone talks about Semien and Ray, understandably so, but I think Matz was the surprise of the year for the Jays
Mark P
8:58
Matz had a pretty solid year, and would be an okay consolation prize for Toronto's rotation if Ray leaves.  Matz's peripherals were a little iffy, but he did enough to merit a multi-year deal from the Jays or another team.

If you're the GM, and they DO have the money, if you're St. Louis, do you go after a SS or sign say a Verlander? Would 2/40-45 do it? I'm not as ready to throw Paul DeJong away as most.
Mark P
9:00
DeJong/Edman/Sosa are such a good defensive trio that there are worse ideas than just keeping them in place for the middle infield and for general utility duty.  The Cards do need another bat, but perhaps they can get that offense in a DH spot if the National League adds it.

That said, the Cards have the resources for both pitching and middle infield help.
It shouldn't really be an either-or scenario

Speaking of Red Sox....Do you see Bloom going after Baez for the Sox this offseason? They could use him in a utility role; primarily playing 2b, giving Boggy and Devers rest at SS and 3B when needed, and then move him back to SS full time after Boggy opts out end of season.
Mark P
9:02
I'm pretty sure Baez will have more options available to him than a glorified super-utility role, even if he did more or less play every day as a second baseman.

And if I'm the Red Sox, I'm planning to extend Bogaerts already, not let him walk

After MLB decided to pay for minor leaguers housing shouldn't next step be more reasonable pay? They make nothing.
Mark P
9:03
Agreed.  The housing is a long overdue step, but bringing salaries above the poverty line should absolutely be next

Who do you think will go after Starling Marte?
Mark P
9:05
The Nationals, Phillies, Padres, Giants, and Mariners all make some degree of sense.  There are other teams (i.e. Cleveland, Milwaukee) that need outfield help but might not be willing to meet Marte's price.

The Nats have a good amount of money, a GM who almost always seems to want to truly compete, owners how are a top 10 payroll yearly, and possibly have a healthy Stephen Strasburg back next year. What major move or moves do you see them doing this offseason? Thanks.
Mark P
9:07
I find it a little hard to believe that the Nats aren't willing to get aggressive in some fashion this winter, so I suspect Rizzo has a big move up his sleeve.  I could see Washington make one very notable signing (perhaps Marte, or perhaps a shortstop) and then several other shorter-term additions, akin to their flurry of one-year contracts last year

Avila mentioned signing a starter. Could it be someone like Stroman or Scherzer or a lesser signing
Mark P
9:09
Adding a veteran ace to augment the younger guys seems like a wise idea, especially since we don't know how the younger Tigers pitchers will perform with less of an innings cap, or even whether or not they're truly proven as big league-caliber arms.

The fun news for Detroit fans is that names like Stroman or Scherzer are no longer pipe dreams.

9:10
How do teams begin signing players to extensions or as free agents when they have no idea what's going to happen to the luxury tax rules during the new CBA discussions?
Mark P
9:11
A lot of the recent extensions (except Senzatela) were for one or two years, which felt like the players just wanted to stay in a comfortable situation and avoid any CBA messiness this winter.  It's possible others might feel the same in the next couple of weeks, though extensions this close to the opening of free agency are pretty rare.

In general, it is quite possible free agent business is slow through November.  It's been slow even without CBA talks hanging over things the last few years.

Why have owners been so against paying minor Leaguers more, even a small raise can't make a big change in their bottom line and could only benefit their team which in theory would make them more money.
Mark P
9:14
Teams (and organizations in general) will never pay more money than they feel they have to, though I can't believe it's taken this long for the league to act on what seems like a common-sense idea.
9:15
Teams put such a high priority on prospects and minor league talent, but then don't take the extra care by making sure they get the proper food, training, and a place to live?  It made no sense from a business standpoint, or an ethical standpoint.

Aren't the Braves a team of destiny too? They have overcome countless obstacles to get this far, don't they deserve a better consideration?
Mark P
9:17
The Braves have plenty of good mojo on their side as well.  Since "destiny" isn't an analytical stat, I do favor Boston mostly because mostly their entire team is hitting like gangbusters and they're getting just enough pitching.

This is a Trade Rumors site......so in that vain, and as a fun exercise, could you create an offseason trade that you think just makes excellent sense for both teams involved? Thanks!
Mark P
9:18
A Toronto/Cleveland blockbuster that involves Jose Ramirez and Teoscar Hernandez changing teams.

Do I sign an extension?
Mark P
9:19
If the Nationals are willing to spend well over $400MM, sure
Dane Mychal

Do you think the Mariners will make a splash long-term signing in free agency, or do you think they’ll spend their money on minor improvements and maybe extend Haniger?
Mark P
9:21
The M's are another team I can see making at least one big acquisition.  Even if they internally won't quite feel they're "90 wins good," they're close enough that they must feel like the playoffs are a distinct possibility as early as next season.  Plus, having one big name in place as an Ivan Rodriguez/Jayson Werth-esque "we're ready to be serious about competiting" acquisition carries some symbolic weight.
Phil
9:21
Can you give us Phillies fans any reason to be optimistic about next year?
Mark P
9:22
Despite all of the team's flaws, they still almost won the NL East.  The Phillies might not be that far away on paper, if they can just raise their talent floor and not get literally nothing from 7-8 roster spots.
9:23
It's easier to raise a talent floor than a talent ceiling, in theory.
Brew Crew
9:23
With the low cost, WS caliber pitching in Milwaukee, do you see the Brewers going after Rizzo, Bryant or Olson?
Mark P
9:24
Bryant is out of the Brewers' price range, and they might not have the trade chips to get Olson out of Oakland.  Rizzo is probably the most viable name of that trio, but I do kind of wonder how much of an upgrade he'd be (at the price he'd cost) over Rowdy Tellez and a platoon partner at first base
Chris

Are the Giants for real or was this just a fluke? Will they regress back to a losing team?
