Let's open up the chat window for some questions, as the offseason rolls on....
Phillies to WS
8:09
Do the Phillies redo the bullpen completely?
Mark P
8:10
I think there's a good chance they re-sign Neris and a decent chance they bring Bradley back, and guys like Coonrod and Brogdon are still in the fold.  But I'd definitely expect to see at least two notable bullpen adds.
Cards Fan
8:11
Do the Cards try to cure all of their problems internally, or will they actually spend a little money this off-season?
Mark P
8:12
The Cards seem to be one of only two teams in the NL Central that are trying to win, so they should be making extra effort to outlast the Brewers.  "Spending big" might just entail one notable starting pitcher and one notable bat (probably a middle infielder)
Jose Ramirez
8:12
What uniform am I wearing next year?
Mark P
8:13
Cleveland Guardians gear, since I don't think Ramirez will be dealt until the trade deadline at the absolute earliest.
And I also think Cleveland could be good next year, so J-Ram might not be going anywhere
Cleveland 4 Life
8:13
Cleveland has been working the trade market since the end of the World Series now and they looked at trading for Bryan Reynolds and Jesse Winker at the deadline. Would any of these guys be realistic for cleveland as they have a roster crunch and tons of prospects to give up? Even Plesac could be involved in a trade.
Mark P
8:14
Given how the Reds seem to be in fire sale mode, Winker has to be considered a viable trade chip at this point.  The problem is, the Guardians aren't the type to offer to absorb a contract (i.e. Akiyama or someone) off the Reds' books to lessen the big prospect cost of a Winker trade.
Winker might be more viable than Reynolds at this point, given how the Pirates are known to be asking for the sun and the moon in return

If the Angels package up 1 young outfielder for pitching would it be Adell or Marsh?
Mark P
8:16
Trading either doesn't seem like a wise move, with Upton no longer a viable starter.  If the Angels want a premium SP, a free agent signing is probably a better route than dealing a top young player
Freddie
8:16
Do you think he signs 6/200?
Mark P
8:17
Probably not, but I can see him getting six years at something around $170-$180MM.
Who's Fabio
8:17
Do you think the Jays would try Moreno at third?  Sounds like he is working out at the hot corner.
Mark P
8:18
There's no harm in working him out at 3B, just to see if there's a way to get Moreno and Kirk/Jansen all on a 26-man roster at the same time.

Hi Mark.  Thanks for the chat.  Wondering if you think the Cards will spend what it takes to get a Stroman or the like?  Seems they are standing pat with the offensive side of the game.
Mark P
8:19
I mentioned the Cards earlier, but Stroman is such a good fit that I can't believe the team wouldn't have interest.  His grounder rate in front of that defense would be scary.

Could Xander be traded this offseason if Bloom doesn't wamt to meet his price? What would the return be like?
Mark P
8:21
This would seem like a tough winter to trade a shortstop, with all of the big names available in free agency.  Plus, the Sox would need to have a real backup plan ready in the event of a Bogaerts trade, since that's a big hole in the lineup of a team trying to win in 2022
Carlos
8:21
Better odds of re signing with Dodgers. Taylor or Seager?
Mark P
8:22
My theory has been that the Trea Turner acquisition basically sealed the deal on Seager returning to L.A., so I'll say Taylor.
Re-signing Taylor might be the better move in the big picture, too.  He's a valuable player that can move all over the diamond, and he'd come at about a quarter of Seager's price tag.
TJ
8:22
Aaron Judge for Josh Hader as the core to a trade. Thoughts?
Mark P
8:23
It'd never happen, but man, imagine the headlines.
Miami Fish
8:23
I liked the MLBTR article about Matt Chapman fits.  Do you think it’s time for the fish to make a move?  What’s it gonna cost to bring Chapman to South Beach?
Mark P
8:24
The easy answer is pitching, since the Marlins have young arms to spare.  It's worth noting that the A's and Marlins have some familiarity with each other already, as per last summer's Starling Marte deal.  Maybe this familiarity can help grease the wheels on another trade.

Luis Castillo to the Yankees for Jason dominqez, Devi Garcia and Clarke Schmidt.  Fair seal for both sides
Mark P
8:26
If the Yankees offered that trade package, I'd suspect the Reds say yes pretty quickly.  But I also suspect that Dominguez is virtually untouchable in trade talks
Reds 91
8:27
Is it more depressing to be a Reds fan or an A’s fan . Neither owner gives their team a chance to be competitive.
Mark P
8:28
The A's have been in contention more often than not for the last 20+ years, so being "competitive" isn't the issue.  But I grant your larger point, it's awfully frustrating to see your team either back off from spending after essentially just one year (Reds) or never really make a spending push (A's)
8:29
If you're an A's fan in Oakland, however, you definitely have the edge in the depression sweepstakes since at least Cincy fans know they team won't move
Cards
8:29
What does a Flaherty extension look like or you see him on another team at some point?
Mark P
8:30
I'm leaning towards another team.  It's not a rule that all players who have contentious arbitration (or pre-arb) dealings don't stay with their teams long-term, but it doesn't bode well
Jerry Reinsdorf’s wallet
8:31
I saw it suggested in a recent MLBTR chat that the WSox not giving a QO to Rodon suggested they won’t be off-season spenders. On the contrary, isn’t it more likely that by not potentially spending 18m on a pitcher who was hurt and ineffective down the stretch they instead want to put that money to better use - ie, upgrades at 2B, OF?
Mark P
8:34
It's not wrong to not see Rodon as an $18MM AAV guy, but the Sox letting Rodon walk for nothing seems like a red flag in at least one of two ways --- either the White Sox aren't willing to much beyond their current payroll capacity, or else they know something we don't about Rodon's health
8:35
Had to pause the chat for a moment for a trade.....Marlins acquire Louis Head from the Rays.
Dan
8:35
Can the Braves get out of Ozunas contract with his legal issues? Also, do you see the Braves making any splash moves?
Mark P
8:36
Probably not, since trying to avoid a contract for morals clause reasons would be difficult to enforce, and it will open a can of worms with the players' union.
