Another brewer question, with the universal DH almost a guarentee to be included in the next deal who do u think the Brewers will target?? Early guesses had them connected to Nelson Cruz but wondering if you have any other possible names??
Mark P
8:19
Cruz would be a nice addition for the Brewers.  I think there's another possibility that they'll just rotate guys through the DH spot to keep people fresh, rather than have an everyday DH like Cruz.
Or, if the Brewers added a big first base bat, maybe Tellez gets more DH time

Freeman to the dodgers? Does it happen? Do the dodgers end up trading lux for a starter? Are you a fan of the dodger dog?
Mark P
8:21
I've yet to attend a game at Dodger Stadium, so I have no opinions on their hot dogs.

My default is to still assume Freeman re-signs in Atlanta, but with each passing day, more doubt starts to creep in.  I've written before that it's still too soon to give up on Lux, but "give up on" and "trades for a more proven player" are admittedly two very different things.

Should we dissolve the franchise? I can’t think of another team, save maybe the Rox, with a bleaker 2-5 year outlook.
Mark P
8:23
This is a bit of an overstatement, don't you think?

Though hmm, if the Phillies disband and the A's are looking to leave Oakland......time for the triumphant return of the Philadelphia Athletics!  Someone contact Connie Mack!

Did the Rangers signings make sense?
Mark P
8:25
Sure, in the sense that their 2022 team already looks far better than their 2021 team.  Much more still needs to be done, but since the Rangers had the willingness and the money, why not go big?

do you believe knebel is the only addition to the bullpen

Nope

Freddy Galvis news is a bit of a surprise. Do you think we see a lot of FA sign overseas to "avoid the lockout"?
Mark P
8:28
This is quite possible.  Galvis is a cut above the usual type of player who signs in Japan, which indicates that the market is a bit broader than expected.  Keep in mind that the Japan Series only ended less than two weeks ago, so the NPB offseason is only just underway.....wouldn't be surprised to see more slightly bigger-name players opt to head to NPB
8:29
Also, for some context, the Hawks have won seven of the last 11 Japan Series championships, but they missed the playoffs last year.  So they might be extra motivated to spend a bit more on a bigger name like Galvis to get back into the title hunt

It’s hard to ever call the Yankees conservative with their spending since they are well over 200 million and they did sign Cole but wow, they really have closed the vaults.  There is no real evidence they will spend once the CBA is resolved is there?
Mark P
8:30
The last time the Yankees ducked under the CBA limit, they started spending bigger, including that Cole contract.  So given their history, I'd say the odds are at least one more expensive acquisition is coming.

Will the Cubs trade Kyle Hendricks?
Mark P
8:33
I would tend to think no, since it seems like the Cubs have completed a lot of the heavy lifting on their fire sale, and now seem to be trending back towards adding talent.  It would be weird to see them sign Stroman then immediately turn around and deal Hendricks.

Reds back in last next year?
Mark P

They still seem markedly better than at least the Pirates, and pretty even with the Cubs

The HOF veterans committee might for the 60’S &70’s might elect someone this coming week. Doesn’t Bobby Grich deserve to be elected? Is he even on the ballot???
Mark P
8:35
The veterans committees focus on different eras of baseball every year.  This year, the focus is on the pre-1900s up to the end of the 60's (it's actually two committees since last year's vote wasn't held because of the pandemic).
8:36
So Grich's next turn wouldn't be until the next "modern baseball" era, which I believe is the 2023 vote
Also, I agree that Grich should be in the HOF

Using your crystal ball, who plays shortstop for the Angels this year?
Mark P

David Fletcher, since the Halos pivot to adding a second baseman instead

What are the Boston Red Sox doing, how can you trade Hunter renfro and give up 31 home runs and 90 Rbi . And you give James Paxton 10 million, he can't even pitch for you till September.
Mark P
8:40
The Sox also have club options for 2023-24, so it's more than just a one-year commitment.

The idea with the Renfroe deal is that the Sox (rightfully) felt they needed to upgrade their defense, and Bradley is a terrific defensive player.  Boston also must feel that JBJ can get his offensive groove back in Fenway.  Renfroe obviously far outperformed Bradley at the plate last year, but the Red Sox can already score plenty of runs.
Not to mention the added bonus of getting two decent prospects from the Brewers

Losing Seager was tough but I believe losing Chris Taylor would have been more damaging to the team. He is so valuable as a depth piece at many positions. Now we are free to replace Seager’s bat a number of ways. Who do you think is in play as a replacement?
Mark P
8:42
I kind of agree, which was part of my reasoning in picking Taylor to remain in L.A. in the free agent prediction contest.  After losing Enrique Hernandez, I figured the Dodgers wouldn't want to lose another Swiss Army Knife kind of player that can help fill so many holes.
8:43
As for replacing Seager's bat, the Dodgers are surely hoping Lux can break out, or that Bellinger gets back on track.  In regards to new faces, the Dodgers would certainly make sense as a fit for a Matt Olson trade.

Do the royals trade MJ
Mark P
8:45
With Salvy now locked up, Melendez certainly looks like more of an obvious trade chip.  Lots of teams would be interested in such a promising young catcher, though Dayton Moore has traditionally preferred to keep and develop his prospects (Wil Myers notwithstanding)

Are $300M contracts always albatrosses? Seems like a purchase of inflexibility.
Mark P
8:47
There have only been a handful of $300MM deals in baseball history, all of which have come within the last seven years.  So I'd say that the sample size is still too small to make that determination.
Also, "inflexibility."  All the teams that can sign a guy for $300MM obviously have plenty of money, so signing such a mega-deal but then claiming they "can't afford" any other additions is a bit misleading

If Devers doesn't sign an extension with Boston this off season where do you put the chances both him and Boegarts are gone after 22'?
Mark P
8:49
I actually kind of wonder if the Sox might try to sign Devers to a Bogaerts-esque deal, with opt-outs available.  Can't hurt to at least make the offer, even if I don't know if Devers would be open to such a contract.
