First weekend chat of the new year!  Woo hoo!  Let's open up the queue for some baseball chat....
Angels
12:09
What will the Angels do at SS? Would they forego another SP and go for Story? Any other mid-tier options out there (Simmons and Iglesias are out in their case I'm sure).
Mark P
12:10
Story is probably unlikely, given that the Halos already gave up one pick for a qualifying offer free agent (Syndergaard).  That is, unless the Angels decide to just splurge and forego another pick in the name of winning now.

Mid-tier options seem the likeliest bet, or maybe a trade (DeJong? Kim? Walls?)  The Angels might also move Fletcher to SS and sign a second baseman, but Fletcher is probably best served as a 2B
Al Avilla
12:11
Kody Clemens and a young pitcher for Sean Manea?
Mark P
12:12
That would have to be a pretty good young pitcher, since I think the A's can find a better offer elsewhere
Red The Bruin
12:12
Do you see JD Martinez being too valuable to the Sox lineup that they wouldn’t consider trading him, especially if the NL adopts the DH?
Mark P
12:13
I wouldn't rule out a JDM trade, since it would give the Sox a bit more lineup flexibility.  Martinez hit much better in 2021 than he did in 2020, though not at peak levels, so we can't rule out a decline.

trade for matt chapman and move him to short
Mark P
12:15
I've got to say, I don't love that idea for the Angels, Yankees, or any other team.  While Chapman might well be able to adjust to the new position, that's a real risk for a team to make when they could just go get a proper shortstop.  Especially if you're a team like Anaheim and can't just slot Chapman over to 3B if the experiment doesn't work out

How did you celebrate last night?
Mark P

MLBTR coverage!  Party animal!

12:16
Do you think the Diamondbacks could make some quality moves this off-season? I feel like when they got Mark Melancon I felt that way.
Mark P
12:17
I don't see the D'Backs making any truly huge moves, since I think they might feel a little stuck between reload/rebuild status.  After the last two seasons, I can understand if they just aren't sure what kind of team they actually have ---- an underachieving team, or a flat-out bad team.
That said, signing Melancon is already a more notable move than I thought they'd make, so maybe Mike Hazen and company have some surprises up their sleeves
Detroit Tigers
12:17
Any chance that Detroit could possibly add another bat?
Mark P
12:18
I'd lean more towards "should" than "could," since a proven hitter would provide some coverage if Greene or Torkelson aren't quite ready, if anyone declines, etc.
Nats
12:19
Do you think the nats youngsters will help end the rebuild sooner than anticipated? What can Nats fans expect to see from guys like Soto, keibert Ruiz josiah grey, lane thomas, robles, etc?
Mark P
12:20
I don't think Soto counts as a "youngster" per se, though he technically is age-wise.  But in terms of the newer faces, it wouldn't be a surprise to see any of those guys contribute in 2022.  Ruiz and Gray have a high prospect pedigree, Thomas already looked quite good last year, and Robles has been good in the past but his last couple of years have been a struggle

The baseball world ALWAYS seems to give the Dodgers positive press. I feel like they’re in real trouble with the impending free agents, high cost to retain decent players (Kershaw, and Jansen) and not too much high talent in the farm system. Please tell me I’m right when I think they’ll take a step back and the media/baseball world in wrong in saying they won’t. The NL West just seems too stacked for them to keep dominating with barely standing pat.
Mark P
12:22
I mean, they have made the playoffs nine years running, so I can understand why people assume the Dodgers will be fine.  They certainly have some needs to address, but even amidst all of their injuries and issues (i.e. Bellinger struggling) last year, they still rolled to 106 wins

The White Sox are win-now, budget conscious, need a 2B, need LHH, and have a glut of corner bats. Does Andrew Vaughn get the conversation started for Ketel Marte?
Mark P
12:23
The Sox have relatively little premium young talent, so Vaughn might have to be included in a theoretical Marte trade package out of sheer necessity.  If it came down to a bidding war with other teams, Chicago doesn't have the minor league depth to outbid the market for Marte

What would it take for the Royals to trade for Sonny Gray? So they have what it takes without including their big 4 prospects, Witt, Pratto, MJ and Lacy
Mark P
12:25
Depending on the Reds' financial situation, I wonder if KC could get away with offering a couple of mid-tier prospects and just taking all of Gray's contract off the Reds' books.
12:26
Or, if KC picked up a player like Shogo Akiyama and paid a portion of his salary, too.

Obviously the Royals might not be the best fit for this scenario since their own budget isn't huge, but teams with more payroll space to leverage could or should explore such deals with Cincinnati

Are there more player chats coming?
Mark P
12:27
At least one chat is in the pipeline for the coming week, stay tuned!

Your guess when the lockout will end?
Mark P
12:28
7-10 days after Spring Training was supposed to begin

Do you think the Cardinals would sign Albert Pujlos to a one year deal to be a DH and then have a Waino, Yadi, AP retirement tour?
Mark P
12:29
This has been rumored for ages, though the Cards have enough right-handed bats already that signing Pujols would seemingly be mostly for ceremonial reasons more than strict need
Mark P
12:30
Do you think some players are signing KBO deals because they don’t want to wait out the CBA agreement?
Mark P
12:31
Absolutely.  If you're a fringe big leaguer who isn't a lock for a guaranteed contract anyway, it makes total sense to get a payday now overseas than roll the dice in waiting for the lockout to end
Bash

1992 was the last time the Pirates won their division and the last time the Yankees had a losing season, which streak do you think ends first?
Mark P
12:31
Which happens first?

Pirates win their division (27.8% | 230 votes)

Yankees have a losing season (72.2% | 598 votes)

Total Votes: 828

Would the A's consider Voit as part of a return for Olsen if the Yankees sent back cash along with prospects?
Mark P
12:32
Voit seems like the logical part of an Olson trade, since the A's apparently aren't punting on 2022 and Voit can be a productive part of Oakland's lineup.

But, this is key, Voit will absolutely not be the headline piece of an Olson trade package.  The A's will rightly insist on at least one premium prospect in return.

Favorite Twilight Zone episode?
Mark P
12:34
I don't think I've ever actually seen a Twilight Zone episode, but I've seen a bunch of them spoofed (on the Simpsons, Tiny Toons, SNL, etc.)

How far over the tax will I be able to go? And if so are Bryant and another top reliever a possibility? Can I offload Didi if I cover 75% of his salary?
