First chat of March!  And one of these months, we'll get some real baseball to discuss!  Let's take some questions....

do you think the tigers will spend more after the lockout is over after the news about illitch?
Mark P
10:52
Not wanting higher CBT thresholds isn't technically the same as not being willing to spend on your own team.  For instance, if the Tigers spend something like $200MM on payroll, they'd still be under a tax threshold.

I also think the Tigers have at least one more notable move or two to be made, whether after the freeze or perhaps in the form of a midseason trade (assuming they're in contention)

10:53
Who specifically would I have to give up to acquire Matt Olson from Oakland?
Mark P
10:54
The A's would want one of Dominguez or Volpe, and the Yankees would balk.  A combo of Gil/Peraza and a couple of other minor leaguers would get Oakland's attention, but another team can probably top that.
10:55
Again, the A's can justifiably ask for a huge return for Olson, so they won't have to settle for a second-tier trade package

whats going to happen when the lockout ends? have teams and agents been negotiating during this like in the nba and there will be a million moves on day 1?
Mark P
10:55
There's surely been some behind-the-scenes talk, but I suspect the league would take a dim view of any major deals that are announced, like, two minutes after the freeze is lifted.
Ch-ch-ch-changes...

14-team playoffs
Mark P
10:58
I can't say I love the idea, but if the playoff field has to be that large, I prefer the "ghost win" concept.  I agree with the MLBPA's stance that there should still be a true advantage to winning your division, and thus incentive to improve your roster
A;s Fire Sale
10:59
Postponed?
Mark P
10:59
If anything, it might be more of a fire sale if the team is now losing revenue from canceled games
Quick Hits

I always have loved baseball over football but now I think football is getting better and baseball worse. Do you agree with me? Do you even like football?
Mark P
11:01
I'm a football fan, but baseball will always be my #1

Seiya Suzuki is not in the Mlbpa, not on a 40 man roster. I think he should have the right to discuss a contract with major league Teams. Your opinion?
Mark P
11:02
It does seem like a bit of a gray area, yet since Suzuki would be signing a Major League contract, he's stuck in lockout limbo.

Mark: Good Morning. Due perhaps to economic restrictions, Do the Fish swing for the fences (re) Reynolds or Marte instead of free agent route?
Mark P
11:04
I guess time will tell how severe these "economic restrictions" are for the Marlins, but it would seem to make a trade more likely than another big signing.  Really, that might've even been the case anyway pre-lockout, given Miami's young pitching depth.

11:04
During the lockout are the mangers aloud to still coach? If this is true does that mean in the event of the season being canceled that the mangers could end up coaching or helping minor league teams?
Mark P
11:05
It's possible some kind of advisory roles could be planned out in that scenario, though teams obviously have their own minor league staffs already in place.
And yes, managers have been at minor league minicamps and still working with players.
Interested in Your Opinion
11:06
Where does Nelson Cruz play in 2022?
Mark P
11:06
My guess is San Diego, as AJ Preller's latest Rangers reunion

11:08
Are there enough starting pitching options left in the free agent market or will the Angels have to part with the likes of Brandon Marsh or Jo Adell in order to fill out their rotation?
Mark P
11:09
It's possible the free agent glut will work to the Angels' advantage, since they're loath to sign pitchers to any lengthy deals.  Some good arms might get squeezed into taking one-year deals.

Glad to see Hensley Meulens back in baseball.  He'd make a good manager for someone.
Mark P
11:10
Meulens has been a "manager in waiting" for five or six years now, but hasn't yet gotten the nod.  Plenty of interviews but no breakthrough hire yet
Youngguns
11:11
Have you seen interest in mlb decrease already through chat questions or participation in these chats?  If so what is the drop in interest level?
Mark P
11:12
There hasn't actually been much of a drop, maybe ten percent fewer questions than usual?  Even that might be attributed to factors like what time I actually start a chat, rather than necessarily any lack of interest in baseball
People just never tire of proposing Jo Adell trades!

11:13
I asked Anthony Franco the same question, but have any of the MLBTR writers actually met each other in person?
Mark P
11:14
I've never met any of my current staffmates, though I've met MLBTR alumni Luke Adams and Ben Nicholson-Smith before
A's & Padres Trade..
11:15
...seems like a good match up in many ways? ...Hosmer to DH, Olson to 1B?
Mark P
11:17
The Padres have the prospect depth to swing an Olson trade, but since their farm has been thinned out by other deals over the years, I'm not sure if they would want to necessarily lose another big chunk of that depth in a single trade.

Hosmer wouldn't really be a roadblock for Olson, but a move to DH is also probably not ideal since Hosmer just hasn't been all that productive at the plate.  Acquiring Olson would only make the Padres more intent on trading Hosmer (not that they aren't already intent)

Trade normal take a lot of time with back and forth than physicals do you see more free agent than trade with a short time. Then trades after season starts,
Mark P
11:20
This is a good observation.  Teams with available money could just prefer the easier path of inking free agents, especially if any relative bargains could be found (i.e. that Angels scenario of landing a good pitcher on a one-year deal).

That said, if you're a team itching to move a player, you might be aggressive early in getting in touch with a potential trade partner.  I'm sure a lot of groundwork was done on possible trades pre-lockout, so PBOs and GMs can revisit those talks relatively quickly

More player chats?
Mark P
11:21
I'd love to get Jo Adell in here and just pitch him trade scenarios for an hour.

Serious answer...I believe we're still trying to get some other player chats lined up, though there's no set schedule.  And, sometimes a chat is arranged on short notice, depending on a player's schedule.
Tommy Pham
11:22
WHY would I sign with the Guardians?
Mark P
11:23
Plenty of available playing time, and a chance to play for a promising team that should be in contention.  Pham has already stated that he'll know he'll have to settle for a one-year contract, and Cleveland is always in the market for relatively inexpensive talent
