How can you utilize a ghost win concept in the first round of the l playoffs if there are 7 playoff teams but only 3 division winners per league and one if them had to get a first round bye?
Mark P
11:25
I love the idea of a guy named Beetlejuice asking a ghost-related question

The idea is that the league's best team would get a bye, setting up three series --- two division winner vs. wild card matchups, and one wild card vs. wild card.  The two division winners without the bye would get the "ghost win" advantage, while the WC vs. WC series would just be a normal series

It seems a lot of these minor league signings of former ML players will lead to a ML roster placement. Why couldn't a Seyia sign now other then looking bad in the eyes of teammates?
Mark P
11:27
Because that creates unnecessary risk for Suzuki, when he could just wait and get a fully guaranteed contract when the lockout is done

Re: Preller's Rangers' reunion - does he have the money space to make any moves at all?
Mark P
11:29
If the luxury tax threshold does go up, that'll create some more breathing room for the Padres to operate.  Moving a Hosmer or a Myers would also help.

That said, the Padres did exceed the threshold last year, so we know it isn't a total red line for SD ownership like it is for so many other teams.

I remember in 2019 the stove was pretty hot. Do you think that had COVID not happened, we would not be locked out?
Mark P
11:31
Pundits were predicting an ugly situation with these negotiations for years, well before the pandemic.  Even as soon as the ink was dry on the last CBA in 2016, there was already some immediate speculation that the next CBA would be much more contentious
Not an Adell trade
11:31
Marsh and Walsh for Lopez and Meyer. Who says no?
Mark P
11:33
I suspect the Angels, since losing Walsh and Marsh suddenly opens up some holes in the lineup
Not an Adell trade
11:33
Jared Walsh and Brandon Marsh for Shane Baz and lesser prospect
Mark P
11:34
Angels say no, or they say "make that lesser prospect a much more prominent player"

The Dodgers have had a payrolls that blasted past any CBA limit. What's to stop them from doing it again?
Mark P
11:36
Nothing.  I think in general, the Dodgers had the "ideal" approach to the luxury tax, from the union's perspective.  They still tried to duck under the CBT threshold to reset their penalties, but then immediately spent big again because they just want to win.

I don't know how much or any influence Magic Johnson has within the baseball ops department, but it's interesting that the Dodgers take the same "whatever" approach that most big NBA contenders have to their salary cap
Mark D
11:36
Would you be for a bases loaded 2 outs situation for each team instead of innings after 11 during the regular season?
Mark P
11:37
Nope.  I'd go normal baseball for the 10th inning, auto-runner on first to begin the 11th, then auto-runner on 2nd to begin any further innings
Anod
11:37
Could Jeter and Arod pull it off together in the booth?
Mark P
11:38
A "Manningcast" with Jeter and A-Rod just making passive-aggressive barbs at each other for three hours would be pretty amazing.

What prospect would the Padres have to attach to Wil Myers in order for the Nats to deal for him and his entire remaining salary? Thanks.
Mark P
11:43
Myers is owed $20MM in 2022, plus the $1MM buyout of his club option.  Interestingly, if Myers was a free agent, he might be the type of player the Nats might target on a one-year deal, given their strategy from last winter.  (Though if Myers had been a FA, he would be looking for a multi-year pact, since he has some quite solid numbers over the last two seasons.)

With this all in mind, maybe a prospect in the 10-15 range of the Padres' system?  But Hosmer's situation is another obstacle, since if the Padres are going to play the "attach a prospect" tactic, they'd much prefer to move a minor leaguer to get Hosmer's larger deal off the books.
Angels Guy
11:44
Anch chance we spend money on Carlos Rodon or Carlos Correa?
Mark P
11:45
Rodon no, since I can't imagine a team as wary about pitcher health as the Angels would want to sign him to a longer-term deal.  And Correa is also likely a no, since the team already has enough money tied up in other larger contracts (and the CBT is an issue for them)
Build it and they will come?
11:47
A's are planning their new stadium with new businesses & residences included. I guess Atlanta did similar? This "Stadium + built-in Community of ticket buyers" approach would appeal to many franchises?
Mark P
11:48
This is absolutely now the preferred model for new ballparks, and I would imagine we'll see other teams explore similar ventures when they start thinking about new stadiums
Hey! Ho! Let's go!
11:48
Do teams want more in a trade from "rich" teams?
Mark P
11:49
Not necessarily, but I do believe that teams who are rich in prospects have to field a lot of terrible offers by teams trying to take advantage of that depth.

Like, "hey Tampa!  Surely you can deal us Josh Lowe for this random starter.  C'mon, you have prospects to spare, roll the dice!"
Bieber trade
11:50
Would Guardians be wise to move him now (after last years shoulder issue, which didn’t require surgery) ? The chance of a repeated injury goes up after a previous injury.
Mark P
11:52
Bieber is in his first arb year and controlled through 2024.  Cleveland's model has usually been to move stars either just before their final season of control or during the second-last season of control.

The injury adds another wrinkle to the situation, but that might make a trade less likely.  Bieber's value is lower now after a lost season, so the Guardians wouldn't get max value back in a trade anyway.

Also, let's not forget, the Guardians want to win in 2022, and probably think they have as good a chance as anyone if their pitchers are all healthy

Lots of speculation that the Mets will look to trade McNeil. Would he not be a perfect fit for my second base hole? Do we have the pieces to swing a trade?
Mark P
11:53
McNeil would indeed be a great answer for the White Sox, and something of a buy-low scenario might be in play given McNeil's tough 2021 season.  However, McNeil is also a guy who generated huge trade interest prior to 2021, so the Mets aren't going to give him away for nothing.

every chat from yall I read where the owners are evil and players are good and deserve as much or mor than the owneres. Everything is always slanted towards the players. Without the players there would be no game. But what about without the owners there would be no game? These players aren't playing for free and out up absolutely no financial risk whatsoever. And plaease don't tell me they put their bodies on the line for this came and can get hurt and not make a great living. You can get hurt driving a car and killed so that is no excuse. I belive I am with many fans that the players demands sometimes make me sick. Ask for whatver you can get but in the long run in a job if you don't get offered what you want. TOUGH. Go someplace else and work or play ball. Probably to cowardly to answer this.
Mark P
11:56
I forget where I read this line, but it was someone recently wrote something to the effect of "if you replaced every player on a MLB roster for the next 780 best players in the world, the quality would definitely suffer.  If you replaced the 30 owners with 30 other billionaires, nothing would change."

Also, I would argue there is no "financial risk" in owning a baseball team.  Being an MLB is incredibly profitable.

How much does each team receive from the national TV deals?
Mark P
11:58
All national TV deals are split equally among the 30 teams
Ken
11:59
If Joe Buck moves on from Fox, who would you like to see handle MLB broadcasts for Fox?
Mark P

Fine!  I'll do it.  Twist my arm.

Who would be the best FA that the Guardians need to pursue? And is within there budget.
Mark P
12:00
The Tommy Pham suggestion from earlier in the chat makes a ton of sense
Ken
12:02
Manaea to Toronto for Zach Logue and Kevin Smith. Who says no?
Mark P
12:02
Oakland.  The A's would want significantly more for Manaea
