The weekend chat is upon us!  Let's open up the mailbag....

What other players would you target if you were the Phillies?  Would you trade Bohm in order to upgrade at CF or SP?
Mark P
11:23
I find it hard to believe that a Kiermaier deal wouldn't still be a possibility, and the Phils wouldn't have to give up someone like Bohm to swing such a trade (unless it's part of a larger, multi-player deal).

Given the Phillies' lack of young depth, I'd be really hesitant about dealing Bohm anyway.  Moving him in the wake of what might just be a sophomore slump could be a really hasty move.

Laureano to the Marlins for Meyer and Bleday. Who says no?
Mark P
11:23
Miami isn't moving that much for Laureano
Haha
11:24
Why do the Twins still silent since they signed Correa? I thought they'll trade Manaea/Montas immediately but they didn't.
Mark P
11:25
Could be that the A's and Reds are both taking a step back to re-evaluate their trade options, i.e. raise their asking prices for teams who might have an even sharper need for pitching (like the Twins)

11:26
At this point, why does a Kimbrel for bellinger swap not make sense? Also which player do you see more likely getting back to form?
Mark P
11:26
If both players are back in form, Bellinger has way more overall value than even an elite closer would bring.  Kimbrel makes some sense as a Dodgers target, but not for a major one-for-one swap involving Bellinger.

Who are the Guardians targeting because only need one more bat ??
Mark P
11:29
I'd argue they need two, and by this point it's hard to guess at what exactly the Guardians are planning.  They've been so quiet throughout the winter that I don't know if it's strictly a payroll issue, or they're on the verge of some trades, or what.

For instance, signing Conforto would make a lot of sense for a team that is trying to contend, and assuming he accepted a one-year deal worth close to the qualifying offer, Cleveland's payroll would still be less than $76MM

How much will the Red Sox fan base hate Josh Donaldson as a Yank?
Mark P
11:29
They don't already hate him from his Toronto days?
Mets Mets Mets
11:30
Why do people think the Mets will trade JD Davis rather than DH him? His offensive numbers look legit.
Mark P
11:31
Based on pure position player surplus, essentially.  But Davis has done nothing but hit when healthy, so he'd be a helpful guy to keep around.  If no team is willing to meet the Mets' demands for Davis, Smith, or McNeil, NY might as well hang onto everyone and either see if the trade market changes, or if injuries or underperformance suddenly make room for everyone to get at-bats

11:33
How many years running do you think Cohen will be willing to exceed the luxury tax? Do you think there's a plan with a reset year in place?
Mark P
11:33
Probably at some point, or at least a "reset" down to a lower tax tier.  Hypothetically, the Mets could even explore this as early as next year if deGrom opted out.
11:34
But in general, I don't think Cohen much cares about paying the tax
Kim Ng
11:35
Which one of my MLB first basemen has more trade value?
Mark P
11:36
I'd say Aguilar because he's been able to stay on the field more, but it's an interesting debate.
Cooper has an extra year of control, so that might be the tiebreaker in his favor
Brett Gardner
11:37
Phillies or Yankees?
Mark P
11:37
It is hard to imagine Gardner actually playing anywhere else until it happens, but he would seem like a much better fit for the Phillies right now than in New York

11:39
The Giants were surprising last year. What team might surprise us all this year?
Mark P
11:40
I feel like I cited the Royals as a surprise team last year and we saw how that turned out, but there's a lot of potential in KC.  They're relying on a lot of young players, but if at least a couple of them break out, the Royals will be fun to watch
Space Ghost Runner
11:40
Thoughts on ghost runner reappearing?
Mark P
11:41
Count me among those who would prefer to see the auto-runner not appear until the 11th or 12th.  Or maybe regular baseball for the 10th, runner on first base in the 11th, and then runner on second base for every subsequent inning
Adam
11:42
Is it safe to say that hal is just being cheap? Volpe and or Peraza better be as good as they say but it’s not fair to have that expectation now
Mark P
11:43
"Cheap" is a relative term for a team with a $246MM payroll.  You can definitely ask questions about how well the Yankees have apportioned that money, but in terms of just pure spending, the team is obviously still willing to open the wallet.
11:44
That said, there is certainly pressure on the prospects and also on Kiner-Falefa.  If he's anything short of a Gold Glove defender and his offense still isn't up to par, the Bronx fans will let him hear it.

11:45
What's going on with me? Seems like I've been bitten by the "Mike Trout" version of the minor injury.
Mark P
11:46
2-3 weeks was the estimate on Rutschman in mid-March, and it looks like he'll be a bit longer than that given his lack of full baseball activities thus far.  No indication yet that his triceps problem is anything truly serious, however.

Thoughts on Grichuk for Tapia trade? Did the jays improve?
Mark P
11:47
I liked the deal for both sides.  Grichuk was an expendable part in Toronto, and Tapia is a better fit just by being left-handed, plus he brings more speed and defense.

For Colorado, they've been looking to add power, and Grichuk brings way more pop than Tapia ever has

The Nationals will be better than people think.  They could even be .500-ish, which just might position them for a run at th third wild card.
Mark P
11:49
The Nats are another team that could be interesting if they get a breakout from one or two of their young players, but they're in an awfully tough division.  Frankly, there's a better chance they finish last than finish in a wild card spot

11:50
With the padres desperate to unload Hosmer, should the Tigers take him with Trent Grisham as the sweetener?
Mark P
11:51
The Tigers seem pretty confident that Torkelson and Greene will be able to step into 1B/CF roles, so Hosmer isn't a fit with Miggy still around
Miguel Cabrera
11:54
Should I retire in 2023? Torkelson already had me tutoring him for a year so now I feel that I can retire.
Mark P
11:54
I find it hard to believe that Cabrera would leave $32MM on the table.
