It still counts as "The Weekend Chat" if it happens on a long weekend, right?  Let's take some questions as the season's first two months are about to wrap up

orioles surely trade mancini or santander, right?
Mark P
9:08
Seems very likely for Mancini, maybe a bit less likely for Santander since he's controlled through 2024 so the O's don't "need" to trade him immediately.  But, they might also want to sell high.

What kind of return could Pablo Lopez bring me?
Mark P
9:10
A pretty huge haul, except I highly doubt the Marlins would do it.  Despite this season's problems, this is a team that wants to start winning, not rebuilding yet again.

Is there a WAR like stat for managers? For example what effect has buck showalter had on the Mets?
Mark P
9:11
....aren't those called "the standings"?
Phillies Fan But Why?
9:12
How does my team position itself for 2023 at this point? We keep inventing new ways to lose.
Mark P
9:13
The bullpen just continues being a weak link, and the roster is strangely constructed.  Even accounting for the circumstance of Harper locking down the DH spot, this is a pretty poor defensive club even with one of Castellanos or Schwarber in regular DH duty.

Perhaps the first move will be to part ways with Joe Girardi, though I don't feel this is entirely his fault.

Can my ceiling reach the Tatis, Acuna, Soto level?
Mark P
9:15
He has that kind of potential, but it's that kind of superstar level is also pretty rarefied air.  If Rodriguez ends up being "only" a good everyday player, Mariners fans will be disappointed, which isn't really fair to Rodriguez

Best Marks of all time… McGwire? Buehrle?  Prior?  Langston?  Fidrych?
Mark P
9:16
Mookie Betts' real name is Markus, so he might end up being the best of the bunch

Carlos Santana is now batting .150. How can the Royals defend keeping him on the roster when Pasquantino is raking in AAA?
Mark P
9:17
It's fair for the Royals to give Santana a chance to get things turned around....but it's also been two months.  It seems past time to bite the bullet and make a change

Are you surprised on how well Tony Gonsolin is doing so far? He is the Dodgers best pitcher
Mark P
9:19
Not all that surprised, really.  Gonsolin has always pitched well, it seemed like he just needed an extended look as a starting pitcher.  On any other team that wasn't so comically deep in starting pitching depth, Gonsolin would've been a starter from day one.

Is this a record season for the movement of players?
Mark P
9:21
In terms of daily transactions?  As someone who sometimes has to write up 6-7 posts all at once about breaking roster maneuvering, it feels that way!

But, also not surprising in a season following a shortened spring training.

Name me a prospect thats gonna climb into the mid-season Top 100.

Hoskins a trade chip ?

9:23
Logan O’Hoppe is looking very promising as a major league catching prospect. If Phillies fortunes don’t improve, does a trade of Realmuto for pieces to address other needs come into play?
Mark P
9:25
As a general observation, there a whole lot of comments like these in the queue, suggesting that the Phils either make a big trade from the MLB roster or maybe even start edging towards "tear it down" mode.  You can never rule out a big move from Dave Dombrowski, but you'd really have to thread the needle in both losing a productive player and a) adding help elsewhere and b) not creating another hole from moving the guy you just dealt.

Do you expect Shane Baz to be a full-fledged starter this year, or will the Rays deploy him in delicate little outings?
Mark P
9:28
I would guess it's a gradual ramp-up, maybe having Baz piggyback with another pitcher at first.  But by season's end, the Rays are surely aiming to have Baz in a full starter's workload if he's healthy
Is this the real Aaron Judge?
9:28
Is Aaron Judge going to continue hitting like this? Offense is slow now in the cold weather. Shouldn't he only get better as it heats up?
Mark P
9:29
Judge has always been a tremendous hitter, his only real issue was staying healthy.  It isn't that shocking that he's taken it to an even higher level since (by all accounts) he's at 100 percent

Is Varsho an All Star or does the bias against Arizona make him a snub for a pitcher as the solo rep?
Mark P
9:31
Varsho right now has the highest fWAR of any catcher (obvious asterisk there) in baseball.  In a year where there will be a ton of good pitching candidates for the All-Star team, Varsho stands out as a unique case, and probably has the best chance of any D'Back at this point

who are your favorite starting pitchers to watch? entertainment wise, or most aesthetically pleasing
Mark P
9:32
As a Jays fan, I am loving the Alek Manoah era.

Keuchel lands in...
Mark P
9:34
I suggested St. Louis just because their defense is a good fit for any grounder-heavy pitcher, and the Cards have been hit with rotation injuries.  Keuchel could be this year's version of the Lester/Happ/LeBlanc pickups.
Phandom
9:34
have you seen the documentary "fastball"? I'm stunned it doesn't get talked about more, I found it riveting and well made
Mark P
9:35
I loved Fastball, it's a must-watch for any baseball fan

Are the Nationals' two Hernandezes underrated rental possibilities?
Joshua
9:37
Cesar Hernandez is quietly putting together a solid season at 2B for the Nats. Do you think he could bring back a top 20 org type prospect at the deadline? Thanks.
Mark P
9:38
Not a top-20 type, but I'm sure the Nationals can get a lottery-ticket type of lower-level player or something.  Cesar, Yadiel, and pretty much every National not named Juan Soto, Josiah Gray, or Keibert Ruiz will be available for the right price
Brooklyn

We want our own team.
