The Weekend Chat is here!  Not to be confused with the Weeknd Chat, which is about being blinded by lights.  Let's get to some baseball questions....

Does Happ or Benny end up a Yankee? If so who's the main prospect you see a package being centered on for each?
Mark P
9:09
Thus far the Yankees haven't been linked to Happ, but I'd be surprised if they haven't at least checked in on his availability.  Happ would cost at least one significant prospect since he's controlled through 2023, while Benintendi (and David Peralta) are just rentals, so they'd have a lower price tag.

Prying Happ away from Chicago might require someone from the Waldichuk/Wells/Sweeney tier of prospects.  If the Cubs are moving Contreras, you'd figure Wells might be of particular interest to them.

Ty France the biggest AS snub?
Dylan Cease
9:09
Am I the biggest All Star Snub?
Ross
9:09
Montas snubbed an all-star spot?
Mark P
9:10
I'd say Carlos Rodon is the biggest omission in my view, but there is no perfect way to include absolutely everyone having a great season.  Besides, with injuries or guys not going to the ASG, some of the "snubs" will get on the roster anyway

Red Sox pitching is a disaster right now. Do you still expect them to go for it this year or be sellers at the deadline?
Mark P
9:11
They would have to completely crater to be sellers, and I don't think that's going to happen.  Once the Sox start getting pitchers healthy, their situation will look a lot better, but they'll certainly still be looking to add some relievers and maybe even starters
David Price
9:12
Do I get traded or DFA? I could get more innings on another team and I haven’t been horrible in a small sample size.
Mark P
9:13
From his latest comments, Price seems perfectly happy playing out what will likely be his last season, trying to help the Dodgers win another title.  From the team's perspective, why not hang onto a guy who is still a solid pitcher, and a known clubhouse leader?
Bob Castellini
9:14
Who is Nick Krall getting for Castillo?
Mark P
9:15
If Mahle and Montas are both not 100 percent, the asking price for Castillo just got steeper.  I can see one top-40 type prospect, and another prospect around the 100ish level.  (Basically, similar to what the Twins got for Jose Berrios last year.)

9:16
Are Dominguez/Volpe untouchable at the deadline? Please tell me yes
Mark P
9:17
Almost certainly yes.  It's possible the Yankees might do Volpe for Trout, if the Angels also threw in Ohtani

9:17
what do the bluejays do now
Mark P
9:19
Figure something out with the rotation, whether that's acquiring a new starter or having a designated opener/bulk pitcher/bullpen game mix for a fifth starter.  That latter strategy would likely mean getting another reliever or two into the mix, since the bullpen is also struggling.

Basically, the Blue Jays are struggling in every aspect of the game right now, which makes it tough to address a simple fix.  They aren't this bad of a team, but they've been in a major slump for the last week (and in many ways, for the better part of a month).
Ben
9:19
Who will be playing right field in Fenway come August 3?
Mark P
9:20
Nobody, since the Red Sox play in Houston that day

9:20
can The brewers trade 1 or both of their hitting coaches. This offense is not good.
Mark P
9:21
I'm not sure I've ever heard of a trade of coaches before.  Surely it's happened at some point in baseball history.....manager trades weren't altogether uncommon back in the day
Angels
9:21
19 games back of Houston entering today. Are they sellers?
Mark P
9:22
Most definitely.  The key stat might be seven games out of the wild card race, and even that status was boosted by their strong play in the first six weeks.  But since mid-May, the Angels have literally been the worst team in baseball, and things don't seem to be improving.
9:24
Delayed by a phone call, back to questions!
Duane
9:24
How stupid is it the Twins don't address their bullpen weakness right now?
Mark P
9:25
Derek Falvey addressed this very point recently: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/07/al-central-notes-twins-guardian...
To summarize, teams are asking for the sun and stars in trade talks right now, and a lot of teams haven't even decided if they're selling yet
9:26
I'm sure Minnesota's front office wants some relief help ASAP, but not at an exorbitant cost
Mancini
9:27
Do I stay in Baltimore now after this little streak we're on?
Bob
9:27
Given Baltimore is near .500, and the market for bat-first DH types is limited, will Baltimore really get anything back for Mancini that outweighs the clubhouse presence he provides?
The Bird
9:27
Do the Orioles rethink their deadline strategy after this recent winning streak? Do you still think Mancini gets dealt?
Mark P
9:28
I suspect the Orioles' front office is staying realistic about the team's chances this year, and they're not going to pass up a good offer for the sake of a longshot chance at a wild card spot.
9:29
The good news for O's fans, however, is that this season (especially this recent run) has got to provide some real hope that the end of the rebuild might be near.
Kirby
9:30
Do the Reds trade Drury
Mark P
9:30
Very likely, yeah
NL ROY

Which Brave wins Rookie off the Year? Harris or Strider?
Mark P
9:31
A tie vote would be fun
Moose
9:31
With the M's managing Kirby's workload through the rest of the season, does it make sense for them to go after an SP? Their in-house rotation depth doesn't seem great.
Mark P
9:32
Agreed.  Can't have too much pitching, especially given Kirby's situation
