The weekend chat is here, so let's dig into some...

What park do I hit #700 at?
Mark P
8:10
Six-game homestand upcoming for the Cardinals....so maybe right there in STL?  Pujols is just scorching hot right now.

Who pays for the Giants’ bad season?
Mark P
8:11
I highly doubt any major front office or managerial changes are taking place.  Maybe a coaching change or two?
RobM
8:11
Have a surprise pick for league champions? How about a Seattle-Braves World Series?
Mark P
8:11
Nobody should be surprised by either team winning the pennant.  The Braves won the Series last year!
Josh
8:12
Do you think the redox will pursue  Edwin  Diaz to fill their closer role?   Or do you see them filling that hole  through  a trade?
Mark P
8:12
Probably trade or a lower-level signing.  It doesn't seem to fit Chaim Bloom's style to suddenly pay top dollar for a closer, even a star like Diaz.

What do you think gives you the best chance moving forward in the Post Season: host the first round to get the home  field and keep playing or a first round bye?  I can see an argument sitting for the first round will cost a team sharpness but I can see an argument for health and recharging.
Mark P
8:13
The "staying sharp" argument has some sense, but every single team in baseball would take the bye 100 times out of 100.  If you have to play an extra series, there's a greater chance you'll be eliminated, simple as that.

I have to get out of the Yoan Moncada contract right?
Mark P
8:17
Moncada is owed $48MM through the end of the 2024 season, counting $2MM remaining in signing bonus money and the $5MM buyout of a club option for 2025.  That is definitely not a great sum considering how poorly Moncada has performed in 2022, but keep in mind he's also been hurt or battling nagging injuries for much of the year
With a normal offseason and Spring Training, Moncada might perform at a more normal level next year.  But, it's also a little hard to say what his "normal" exactly is, or if 2019 was just an outlier

Is Ohtani already a hall of famer? If not, how many more seasons of his 2-way success would you need to see from him?
Mark P
8:20
He's only had five MLB seasons total, and only three of those seasons were "peak Ohtani" in sense of being a two-way threat (he hit but didn't pitch in 2019).

Ohtani is so unique, however, that he might only need two or three more seasons like this before he starts looking like a shoo-in for Cooperstown.  Technically he needs 10 MLB seasons to qualify, but I could see voters making an exception in his case, or using his NPB career as a factor

How common is it for teams to trade near-MLB ready prospects for MLB-ready prospects? The Tigers have a ton of MLB-ready pitchers, but hardly no position players. I can't think of two teams ever doing this type of trade. Can you?
Mark P
8:21
They're pretty rare.  The last one that immediately leaps to mind was the Michael Pineda/Jesus Montero swap between the Yankees and Mariners, and that was a decade ago.
RobM
8:22
I probably knew this, but I can't remember the outcome. How can there be three division winners and three WC winners with one round of byes.  Does one division not get a bye, or does one WC winner get one?
Mark P
8:22
Only the top two division winners get byes.  So the division winner with the worst record has to play in the wild card round, hosting the worst of the WC teams in a best-of-three
Cy
8:24
If not Sandy, who has shot at NL Cy Young?
Mark P
8:25
Rodon and Nola both have more fWAR than Alcantara, and Fried is tied.  I don't think it's really a clear-cut race at all.

Any hunch who might be our next GM? I’m hoping we look outside of the organization. We clearly have an issue with developing hitters. I know Tork and Greene have potential, but I feel like it’s been ages since we’ve had a successful hitter come through our minor league teams.
Mark P
8:26
The last report concerning the Tigers' search focused on almost all names from outside the team, apart from Sam Menzin

I would tend to think Detroit picks a fresh face, rather than promoting from within
Dealing Dave
8:29
Given the rumors about Xander, and the FAs leaving the team, and he's one year from free agency, how likely it is that Rhys Hoskins is traded this offseason? Maybe for a quality starter?
Mark P
8:31
Trading Hoskins is one option for Philly, but letting Segura go might be the more realistic option.  If they wanted to be tricky about things, they could exercise Segura's option and then potentially deal Segura OR Hoskins, depending on what offers look like

8:32
Who could we have traded Christian Walker to back at the deadline?
Mark P
8:33
No specific teams were mentioned as possible suitors for Walker, but it's probably safe to guess that some of the teams who were in on Josh Bell (i.e. the Brewers, Red Sox) also checked in on Walker's services
The D'Backs had a big asking price for Walker that wasn't meant, and it may have worked out for the best, considering how Walker has been hitting in the second half

8:35
Why have not started 5 of last 7 games?
Mark P
8:36
Probably because the Giants are giving some looks to other players down the stretch.  They already know what they have in Crawford, and if the Giants have their eyes on any of the big free agent shortstops, Crawford may be being phased out anyway
Pete

A Sox broadcaster today suggested that by missing the playoffs, the Red Sox will have about a month after the season to talk extension with Bogaerts before he opts out. Is it common for players to get extended while the playoffs are still going on?
Mark P
8:38
It's pretty rare, especially for a player like Bogaerts who has a big free agent contract waiting if he opts out.

Moreso than just a pricey extension, I suspect Bogaerts will also have to be convinced that the Sox are moving in the right direction.
Ross Atkins
8:39
Should I really be carrying 6 outfielders plus Biggio/Merrifield that can also play OF?
Mark P
8:40
With Gurriel on the IL, Springer's elbow an uncertainty, and even Hernandez maybe not 100 percent, the Jays feel they need all this depth.  It's not an ideal bench setup to say the least, and personally, I'd like to see a more versatile guy like Otto Lopez get any kind of a real look at the MLB level

The Zac Gallen/Jazz Chisolm trade was a near-MLB ready prospects for MLB-ready prospects trade
Mark P
8:41
That's a good one, true
