Contreras
7:39
Will his second half injuries is he playing himself into accepting a qualifying offer?
Mark P
7:39
The catching market is so thin that Contreras will still find a nice multi-deal contract this winter.  He won't have to settle for the QO
Ducky
7:41
Do you expect the angels to be sold within the next year? The original article said Moreno would “explore” selling the team, so it didn’t sound like a foregone conclusion he would
Mark P
7:42
An owner who makes a public statement like that is basically hanging the 'for sale' sign on the window, so a sale is almost definitely happening

How much would Crawford being under contract with the Giants hamper any efforts to land one of the big-name shortstops. It seems a little late in Crawford’s career to make him change positions. Would any of the FA shortstops be willing to switch for a year?
Mark P
7:44
I don't think Crawford's presence is a huge roadblock.  His defense has been pretty iffy this season (depending on your metric of choice), so it might behoove him to switch to second or third base anyway.
Another Royals QT
7:46
How do the Royals address their lack of player development issues in regards to their pitching area?
Mark P
7:47
Singer's development shows that it isn't a lost cause.  Keep in mind, the lost 2020 minor league season hit teams like the Royals (who rely on a strong pipeline and were in the midst of a rebuild) harder than most teams.

7:47
Elvis Andrus has been the MVP of the White Sox with his bat & glove since being signed after a DFA. Will he now be able to find a 2 or 3 year deal this winter as a SS? What will his next contract look like IYO?
Mark P
7:49
One scorching-hot month won't erase memories of Andrus being a pretty average player for the last few years.  Going into his age 34 season, Andrus has likely secured a Major League deal for himself in 2023, which sure didn't look like the case just a few weeks ago when the A's let him go
Carlos Rodon
7:51
How popular of a free agent will I be? Do you think a high number of teams won’t be interested with the previous injury history
Mark P
7:52
The 2022 season has done a lot to calm doubts about Rodon's health, so I think he'll get quite a bit of interest
Toronto
7:53
Mitch White blew up in Toronto, do they move him to the pen full time next year? Or does he play the Stripling role moving forward?
Mark P
7:53
White definitely seems like Stripling 2.0

If the Phillies miss the playoffs, is Dombrowski out? His main skill set is spending money and prospects to win now. But if they’re not winning, all he’s doing is spending.
Mark P
7:54
There is little chance Dombrowski is fired after just two seasons, especially since the Phillies have turned things around so severely since Girardi (a manager DD didn't hire) was let go

When teams are bidding on a free agent, do they have accurate info on what bids have been made by other teams? Or do teams rely on the claims of the players agent? (The Yankees offered 10/350, you're gonna have to beat that)
Mark P
7:58
I'm sure teams might have some intel (i.e. a GM is good friends with another GM or something) in some cases, but in general, the front offices are flying pretty blind.

That said, the rise of analytics in many front offices has let to some uniformity in offers, so in that sense it might be easier to guess what a market may be.  Not to mention the fact that contracts and market conditions are so widely analyzed and known by websites (including ours) and fans alike, and a true outlier offer is pretty surprising.

Forget Tigers  GM  make an offer to buy the A's.
Mark P

I'm not sure a snazzy multi-coloured header will be enough to make up for my being roughly $2 billion short of the Athletics' asking price

Is it better for me to sit on payroll for another year to see how the young guys grow, or is it better to open the check book and see if money solves the giants problems?
Mark P
8:03
There's enough veteran talent on the Giants right now that winning in 2023 is definitely possible, with some necessary upgrades.

I would also argue that a contending environment could actually be beneficial to a younger player's development. Look at how teams like the Dodgers, Rays, Cardinals, or (more recently) the Braves have so successfully gotten immediate results from prospects.  Being tossed into the deep end won't work for every prospect, of course, but I think there is definitely something to the idea of "learning how to win" right off the bat

What does strider have to do to get some cy young love
Mark P
8:04
Get a time machine and get called up earlier in the season?  Too many good NL pitchers for Strider to make a late Cy case, but still, what an awesome season
Dave Roberts
8:05
Will I move on from bellinger.  We have outman. What about judge .
Mark P
8:07
The Dodgers will certainly check in on Judge, but I'm not sure it's an ideal fit. It does seem like Bellinger won't be retained, whether it's via trade or (if all else fails) a non-tender.  He's still a good defensive player but that isn't worth the arbitration price tag
Correction
8:10
Strider has been on the Braves the whole season he was just in the bullpen until late May.
Mark P
8:10
That is absolutely correct.  Brainlock on my part
The Racing Presidents
8:11
When do you expect the Nationals will have a new owner in place?
Mark P
8:12
I would guess around February or March, once a bidder is chosen, the deal is fully finalized, and MLB approves the new owner
Yankees
8:12
Do you expect us to re-sign Benintendi, and if not, are we in on Nimmo?
Mark P
8:13
Nimmo makes a lot of sense for the Yankees.  Benintendi would be cheaper, but also isn't a fit for CF.  There's also Aaron Hicks to consider, but I find it hard to believe he'll still be with the team next year.  Even if the Yankees have to eat some money or make a bad-contract swap, Hicks will be moved.

Do you think the Astros let Verlander go to spend elsewhere on the team?  With Brown clearly on the up the Astros still have a great depth without Verlander.
Mark P
8:16
Depth and talent, sure.  But if you have a chance to retain Justin Verlander and he wants to stay on your team, that seems like a better idea.  The "you can never have too much pitching" rule applies here, plus if the Astros did want to make a trade, they could offer one of the other guys --- controllable pitchers have a lot of trade value.

Keep in mind, Verlander can't be issued another qualifying offer.  So if he did leave, the Astros wouldn't get anything in return.

Steve wrote this week for subscribers that the A's should take on "bad" contracts of guys like Hunter Renfro, Evan White, etc. I tend to agree. Your thoughts who else may be included in that list?
Mark P
8:20
It was actually Hunter Dozier mentioned, not Renfroe.  And there are plenty of "bad" contracts to be found around baseball, as pretty much every club has at least one deal they'd love to get off their books.

My counter to Steve's article, however, is that A's ownership seems to have no issue in having a rock-bottom payroll.  As much baseball sense as it might be to absorb a contract and buy a prospect or two, the A's front office simply might not have the flexibility to spend much of anything
Oneil Cruz
8:21
I might be okay at shortstop, but wouldn’t I be outstanding at first base?
Mark P
8:22
The Pirates will keep him at shortstop for as long as he's viable at the position, since basically, why not?  Even if a move to first base is inevitable, the Bucs might as well see what Cruz can do at short

8:23
Your hunch on how many HR's Judge ends up with this season?
Mark P
8:23
I think he has a legit shot at 67, which would be the third-highest single season total in history (behind only Bonds and McGwire)
