The final Weekend Chat of the regular season!  Let's take some questions as we enter the last few games before the playoffs....
Matt

Unpopular opinion here, but should the Tigers trade Tyler Alexander and get a haul back then sign two starters (another to make up for Hutchison and Alexander)? Then they could even trade for one.
Mark P
8:30
Alexander has some value with his three years of team control, but he isn't going to bring back "a haul" in any trade return.  After all of Detroit's pitching injuries this year, they're probably going to want as much depth as possible next year, so I don't see them moving many or any arms
Gideon
8:31
What are the Braves thinking by guaranteeing Charlie Morton $20 mil in 2023?
Mark P
8:32
Morton is still a solid pitcher who can eat innings, and he isn't really showing many signs of decline.  Since Atlanta had a $20MM club option on him for 2023 anyway, they just got a jump on things by guaranteeing that option already, plus adding another option year for 2024 via the extension

We’d better not screw this up now. We might but I’m not sure that the Brewers will let us.
Rob Thomson
8:32
Do you think our team got this?
Mark P
8:34
The Phillies' magic number to clinch a postseason spot is now one.  While Philadelphia has an unfortunate history of late-season collapses, I hope I'm not tempting fate by saying that the Phils should have this wrapped up
8:35
(braces for an angry Charlie, Mac, and Dennis to show up at my door next week if the Phillies do screw it up.)
Pickle Rick
8:35
How soon could we find a buyer for Angels?
Mark P
8:36
With all of the logistics that go into finding a buyer, finalizing a sale, and getting the go-ahead from the league, it might be some time.  Maybe April or May?
Austin
8:36
Do they reds make any “splash” signings in the off-season or are they another year away?
Mark P
8:37
My guess is at least another year away.  They'll continue to rebuild in 2023 and see what they have with the younger guys, plus Votto and Moustakas are both off the books after next season
Othani
8:38
What will it take for me to extend with the Angels after next year
Mark P
8:38
Besides the proverbial dump truck full of money, Ohtani would certainly want clarity on the ownership situation, and he'd have to be confident that a new owner would have the Angels on the right track
Paul
8:39
Regardless of how many hrs judge hits, who do you consider the all time leader
Mark P
8:39
Unless Judge hits 13 homers in three games, Barry Bonds is the all-time leader
Rick Hahn
8:40
Who do I get to manage the team next year?
Mark P
8:41
Probably someone with past White Sox ties, whether that's an internal coach (Miguel Cairo, Joe McEwing, etc.) or another former coach or manager who used to be part of the organization.
8:43
Then again, nobody expected the La Russa hire, so we can't rule out another outside-the-box choice.  Having failed in my bid to become the Tigers' next president of baseball ops, I guess I could submit a resume....does "attending a couple of games in Chicago" count as having past White Sox ties?
Ross Atkins
8:43
How concerned should I be with Vladdy’s decline this year?
Mark P
8:45
"Decline" is a relative term here.  Guerrero certainly has to figure out how to cut down on the grounders and get the ball in the air in a more consistent basis.  However, if a down year still results in a 130 wRC+, that's still awfully good
8:46
It's also worth noting that Guerrero is still only 23 years old.
World Series
8:47
Odds of the #1 seeds both making it to the World Series?
Mark P
8:47
I would bet on the field, just because there are so many good teams and because the playoffs are something of a crapshoot.  Astros vs. Dodgers would hardly be a surprise, of course
Josh
8:48
Can you see Correa and the Twins working out a long-term deal?
Mark P
8:49
Probably not.  As much as Correa might like playing there, I don't see the Twins paying the franchise-record high amount it would take to lock him up
Greg Sestero
8:49
Ha ha ha what a story Mark. Who’s closing games for the angels next season? Any chance Moreno would approve a deal for Diaz?
Mark P
8:50
It's an open question as to how much Moreno will spend if he's on the verge of selling the team.  Plus, if you're Diaz, would you sign a long-term contract if you didn't know who your next owner was going to be?
Sam
8:50
Is Chapman done? In pinstripes? For his career?
Mark P
8:51
With all of the bullpen injuries the Yankees have had, there's a chance Chapman might get onto the playoff roster after all.  But I highly doubt he is resigned this winter.
Another team will sign him, but there are plenty of red flags about his performance
Josh
8:52
What do you think the future holds for Royce Lewis? Can he be a perennial All-Star if healthy?
Mark P
8:53
I have to bet against it at this point.  Two ACL tears is such a brutal setback and just getting back on the field and having a regular career would be a huge win for Lewis
Fredbird
8:53
How realistic is a Cards run at one of the top shortstops in FA? And if they were to sign one would they possibly move Edmonds and what could they get for him?
Mark P
8:54
The Cards probably aren't making the big splash at shortstop when they already have Edman and Donovan, plus Masyn Winn on the way
Analytics killed Baseball
8:55
Farhan on the hot seat yet? They are no better off then when he arrived?
Mark P
8:56
They're surely not firing him a season after winning 107 games, and the Giants might even still manage a winning record this year.
Say Hey Kid
8:56
Who should the Giants target this off-season?
Mark P
8:58
Plenty of positions stand out, though the Giants also have flexibility at several spots.  I've made this point a few times, but it would probably help SF to just land a couple of true everyday players, rather than try to play the platoon game all over the diamond.  Locking in an everyday player for the outfield, for instance.
