Hey there folks, the Weekend Chat is upon us!  Just had to add a quick note to the Matt Quatraro post, and now we're ready to roll.
Orioles
7:52
Trea Turner wants to come back east. Should we be players?
Mark P
7:53
In theory, the Orioles have the payroll space to pursue basically anyone, assuming they're able to spend up in the $160-$165MM range they were at around 2016
7:54
Getting Turner would be the kind of bold "we're ready to contend" signing we've seen some other teams make in the past, but I tend to think the O's will be a bit more conservative with their moves this winter.  They still have a lot of good young talent they need to evaluate at the MLB level, and since so much of that talent is in the infield, they might not want to immediately lock up a spot with Turner for the next several years.
7:55
(Especially since Henderson might also have dibs on one of the other infield spots.)

7:56
What else would the Cardinals have to include with Gorman to trade for Sean Murphy?
Mark P
7:58
Gorman would be an ideal starting point for a trade package, as the A's would want at least one blue chip young player like him.  Going by the usual Oakland model of "one MLB-ready player, one good prospect, one good longer-term prospect," I could see something like Gorman, Tink Hence, and another pitcher in the top 20-25 prospect range as something the Cardinals might be willing to part with.
7:59
Whether the A's might take that offer is unknown, or if another team might be able to top it.

Or, frankly, whether the Cards would just like to keep Gorman and move someone else

If we win the world series am I going to keep both Dusty Baker and James Click around, or will at least one of the two surely go elsewhere?
Mark P
8:00
It is starting to feel like Click is going to be gone regardless of the Series outcome, and Baker will be retained.
Which makes for an odd situation for some other teams, since I would suspect Click would instantly get a lot of attention as a front office candidate if he's on the open market.

Will the Rangers land both DeGrom & Kershaw ?
Mark P
8:01
Nope.  I'd be surprised if Kershaw isn't a Dodger next year.  The Rangers will bid on deGrom and, since they're willing to spend, might have a shot.

I don’t understand why the Pirates have yet to fire Derek Shelton in favor of Ron Washington or another winning-pedigree manager. Do you anticipate the Pirates increasing payroll this offseason?
Mark P
8:03
Maybe a slight increase, since Ben Cherington has said the team might be more open to signing pitchers to multi-year deals.

But by increase, maybe $5-$10MM, and not some big splurge.  It's possible the Pirates might try to lock up Contreras or Cruz to extensions.
Brewers Homer
8:04
I know Sterns 'isn't going anywhere' - that said, is your gut telling you he'll still be a Brewer after next year?
Mark P
8:04
My guess is that he's leaving for another job.

The Padres' ownership group recently made public statements about not being concerned about going over the luxury tax (again) and being willing to spend continuously if need be... What move/trade/signing could AJ Preller possibly make that would break everyone's brain? Judge? Ohtani?! deGrom?!
Mark P
8:06
You can't really rule anything out with the Padres, so none of these moves would entirely shock me.  The Ohtani one would be more surprising since I ultimately don't think the Angels would actually trade him
Angels4321
8:06
Any chance that Ohtani gets an extension before the new owner takes over?
Mark P
8:07
Highly unlikely.  Ohtani surely would want to get to know the new owner before committing himself to the Angels for many years.
Chris Young
8:07
Do you think there’s a chance ownership will let me double dip and spend big on both Rodon and DeGrom?
Mark P
8:08
(Chris Young = Rangers GM)

After last year's double-dip in the shortstop market, wouldn't be shocking if the game happens on the pitching side this year

8:08
Can I resign Rodon and still land Judge? Is that wise considering other holes that need to be addressed? What do you see me doing?
Mark P
8:09
The Giants are another team with a history of large spending, and plenty of room to go before they hit those past levels.  They only have around $132MM on the books for 2023, so they would easily fit, say, $55MM combined for Judge and Rodon and still have plenty left over for other needs
And that's not even counting non-tenders, or trades of other players currently on the roster

From what I read, Arenado is simply not exercising his opt out with no added contract incentives (more years, more money) to stay.  Is that correct?
Mark P
8:11
Correct.  I had long predicted that Arenado would stay with the Cardinals, but I figured he'd negotiate another year added onto the end of his deal.  That's a nice bonus for the Cards that Arenado just stayed in his current deal.

How is James Click as a GM? Should the Astros stay the course in the front office?
Mark P
8:14
It's hard to argue with results. While it's true that much of the Astros core was in place before Click got there, he certainly hasn't done anything to throw the team off course, and he has made some canny additions to the bullpen.  In the bigger picture, it's also worth noting that he (and Dusty Baker) seems to have been a stabilizing element on a team that might have been overwhelmed by all the controversy

Who’s the better baseball player Albert Pujols or Roberto Clemente?
Mark P
8:15
I feel like we had a poll on this topic a few weeks ago, and it was almost exactly a 50-50 split

What's the hangup on Bogaerts? Bloom doesn't seem anxious to get it done. Wouldn't his price go up, if he opts out on the open market?
Mark P
8:18
Bogaerts is close enough to free agency that, to keep him from testing the market, the Sox would have to pay beyond their comfort zone.  It would be a real surprise if they did work out an extension before the FA market opens.
Now, it could also be argued that Boston should have a larger comfort zone for a Bogaerts deal, given his importance to the team
Guardians of the Galaxy

Cleveland has made it clear that they wish to add more power to their lineup. They have needs at C, 1B and DH. Naylor can both play first and DH. Who do they target in FA that they can afford or trade for to fill these holes?
Mark P
8:20
Just because he's such an AL Central staple, I wonder if Jose Abreu would be a good fit for the Guards.  Obviously he can still hit, and he'd be a nice fit into that 1B/DH mix with Naylor (though that would basically lock up the DH spot).

Any chance the White Sox decline Tim Anderson’s club option?
Mark P
8:20
Nope

Reaction to Quatraro signing?
