Michael J. Fox rules!

Where should I go this off-season?
Mark P
9:58
"This" offseason is tricky since teams already have their front offices basically set.  If I'm Click, I'm not settling for a second-in-command job coming off a World Series ring.

I speculatively mentioned this last night in the Royals-centric chat, but JJ Picollo is still only the Royals' GM --- he didn't get a promotion to "president of baseball operations" when he took over their front office.  It does leave room for Click to perhaps get hired in Kansas City, and the hiring of a former Rays staffer in Quatraro is maybe another hint in that direction.

Should I defer all free agent contacts?
Mark P
9:59
It take away from the uniqueness of Bobby Bonilla Day, but if players are open to deferred money, I guess why not?

What do you believe the total Cubs spending would be this off-season? Over or under total contracts $300 million?
Mark P
10:01
Leaning towards the over.  Last winter, they stuck mostly to shorter-term deals (except for Suzuki and Stroman) and ended up spending around $213MM.

Being more aggressive this winter would likely put them over the $300MM mark.  But, we maybe shouldn't rule out a redux of last offseason....one or two bigger-money deals and then a ton of one- or two-year contracts

Golden retrievers, all day every day

At what point does ownership give Friedman and Dave Roberts a “win a full season WS or you’re fired” ultimatum?
Mark P
10:04
If they keep reaching the playoffs and winning 100 games every year....never?

I do believe JV comes back to the Astros.  With that in mind, they most likely will deal a SP.  Urquidy seems to be the most obvious.  The Cardinals seem like a good match.  Would Nootbar or Yepez be good fits for a trade for Urquidy?
Mark P
10:06
I'm higher on Nootbaar than Yepez.  A Lars-for-Urquidy 1-for-1 probably doesn't work, but it's an interesting framework for a trade.

Though there is the small fact that the Cardinals and Astros hate each other, and probably aren't in a great mood to talk trades

Isn't this a baseball chat? Why am I seeing questions about golden retrievers and bees?
Mark P
10:07
Air Bud is an accomplished baseball player.  And the Atlanta Braves were once known as the Boston Bees.

Are kirk, guerriel, pearson and biggio enough for ohtani?
Mark P
10:09
If Arte Moreno wants to commemorate the Vernon Wells trade by giving the Jays another sweetheart of a deal, sure.  Otherwise there's no way Anaheim makes that move.

Any chance Rizzo accepts the QO?
Mark P
10:10
Nope.  Declining his $16MM player option and then taking the QO to add another $3.65MM to his bank account doesn't make much sense.
10:11
Now, there is a minor chance Rizzo pulls a Jose Abreu and accepts the QO, and then signs a longer-term extension with New York shortly thereafter.  But if Rizzo really wanted to stay with the Yankees, he wouldn't need to take the QO in this scenario

What prospects would the Yankees have to give up to offload Donaldson’s contract??
Mark P
10:14
Donaldson is owed $21MM in 2023, and there's a $6MM buyout of his mutual option for 2024. It's not like the Yankees would have to attach Volpe or someone, and that salary is relatively small enough (by NYY standards) that they might just eat it entirely if they really wanted to move on from Donaldson.

If Seattle takes on all of Yelich's contract, could we get Burnes also with giving up the farm?
Mark P
10:17
Yelich has a full no-trade clause, so he'd have to sign off on this idea first.  And while the Mariners have some money to spend, doesn't seem likely that they'd use most/all of that spending capacity on absorbing Yelich's contract.  Plus, Burnes isn't exactly cheap himself.

Do you think the Mets will go after Josh Bell for DH?
Mark P
10:19
Probably doubtful, since between Alonso and Bell, 1B/DH are both locked up for the foreseeable future.
In general, most teams prefer more flexibility with the DH spot
MLB Rumor

Besides Corbin Burnes, Brandon Woodruff, Pablo Lopez, and Bieber (clubs say 3 of those are not being traded), is there anyone else Texas could target via trade?
Mark P
10:21
Since the Rangers are willing to spend money, they could use that space to absorb a bad contract, and thus help grease the wheels towards a pitcher trade.  Nothing on the level of that Burnes/Yelich proposal, but hypothetically.....get something good back from the D'Backs while taking on Bumgarner's contract?  Bruce Bochy might like a reunion with his former playoff ace.

Time to wrap things up. Thanks for all the questions.....tons of people in the chat tonight, fans are clearly fired up for the offseason!
