Mr. Cub
8:37
What kind of return could the Cubs get for Ian Happ?
Mark P
8:38
They could get an okay return even with Happ only controlled for one season, but my hunch is that the Cubs will just keep Happ by this point.  Maybe an extension candidate, or maybe someone they'd let walk in free agency

Have the DBacks passed the Giants? Or do they need another year of development to truly pass them up? Colorado isn’t far behind AZ in development either. SF looking at multiple 5th place finishes this decade?
Mark P
8:40
As someone who has been pretty high on the D'Backs for the last few years only to see them disappointment, I am once again finding myself thinking of them as a possible dark horse team, if still streets behind the Dodgers and Padres.

Also, I don't think the Giants are quite in dire straits.  Yes, missing on Judge and Correa hurt, but their other moves this offseason are pretty solid.

Could a couple mid level prospects land Marquez on the angels?
Mark P
8:41
Given how highly the Rockies value Marquez, not even close

Hi Mark, who do you think is more likely to be in the Jays rotation in late summer: Ryu or Tiedemann?
Mark P
8:43
Interesting question.  Tiedemann has only 11 innings of Double-A ball under his belt, but assuming he keeps pitching well, I could see Toronto debuting him in late August....though perhaps as a reliever, depending on what the team needs at the time.  The need for Tiedemann will obviously be greater if Kikuchi, White, or someone else in the rotation struggles or is hurt, or if Ryu has a setback
Ryu had his TJ surgery in mid-June and is hopeful to be back by the All-Star break. Given his injury history, that might be a bit optimistic.
David Stearns
8:44
Did I leave Milwaukee because the financial constraints are too frustrating to deal with?
Mark P
8:45
Technically Stearns hasn't "left" Milwaukee.  And Stearns knew what he was signing up for when he took the job in the first place --- the Brewers were never going to be huge spenders.  If anything, Stearns has enjoyed way more financial leeway than any other Brewers executive, given their club-record spending

I still don't buy that the Dodgers care that much about the Luxury tax. Apparently (not sure if verified) they offered 40 million a year for Verlander which would have put them over. Could it be that they just didn't like any of the big ticket free agents for the years and prices they went for? Thoughts?
Mark P
8:47
The Dodgers would surely prefer to get under the tax threshold if possible, but if it's the difference between contending or falling behind in the NL race, they won't be afraid to keep spending.
LA also have enough money coming off the books next winter that they could feasibly try to reset their tax number next year, too

How likely is it that San Diego will sign Juan Soto to a long-term contract?
Mark P
8:50
Better than 50-50.  While lots of things can change in the next two years, surely the Padres acquired Soto with every inclination of trying to extend him to a (record) long-term deal.  Now, it is possible that extension doesn't happen simply because Soto truly wants to test the market, but the Padres have shown they're willing to spend big on elite talent.

Tiger fans are calling for my head. Do I trade a starting arm or two?
Mark P
8:51
It's been only a couple of months!  Chill out, Detroit fans!
Esteven Florial
8:52
Time to give me a real chance.  63 at-bats isn't a real shot.
Mark P
8:54
The Yankees seem to run hot and cold on giving their prospects an extended audition, which isn't really surprising for a team that's always in contention.  That said, Florial already seems to have been passed by Cabrera on the LF depth chart.
DeGrom Texas Ranger
8:56
New left fielder opening day?
Mark P
8:57
The Rangers are another team with enough in-house LF options that they might at least start the season with the internal group to see if anyone steps up (or if a feasible platoon emerges).  Then, they can look into a trade if things aren't working out.

8:57
Does SF backing out from Correa’s deal hurt them in future FA negotiations?
Mark P
8:58
Given that there seems to be some real concern over Correa's health status, I don't think this will hamper the Giants' rep to any great extent

Marcel Ozuna for Chris Sale and $10M. Who says no?
AA
8:59
Sale for Ozuna. We quibble to mature the money work. Who says no?
Mark P
8:59
I don't think the Red Sox take this particular deal, but this is probably closer to the types of Chris Sale trades that teams would feasibly make

anything about cleveland moving a pitcher for another outfielder
Mark P
9:01
Now that the free agent pitching market has been largely emptied out, you'll see the teams with a possible pitching surplus (like the Guardians) start to get a lot more attention

Sorry my last question got cut off.. Would Santiago Espinal be a good target to play 3B for Detroit, Jays dont really have a place for him do they?
Mark P
9:02
What, you don't think Tyler Nevin is the answer at third base?

Espinal will be at least a part-time player at second base for Toronto, as he has shown he can crush left-handed pitching.  My guess is that none of the Jays' second base mix (Espinal, Biggio, Merrifield) are truly untouchable in trade talks, but the Jays also like the roster depth that the trio provides

9:03
Any chance Liam Hendricks is traded to the Mets for Escobar? White Sox were in on Escobar a couple years ago, and could post him at second, presumably. Would it be a straight trade, if so, or would the Mets need to add another piece?
Mark P
9:04
Wouldn't be a 1-for-1 deal, but this would be an interesting framework for a multi-player swap.
Cubbies
9:04
Wouldn’t it make more sense long term to get rid of Stroman and Hendricks to see why they have in Thompson, Wesneski, Kilian
Mark P
9:05
The Cubs are planning to compete in 2023, however, and they need some experienced arms in that rotation.  Granted, Hendricks is far from a sure thing any more, but it is also quite possible 2023 is his last year anyway in Chicago
Best Rotation Ever
9:06
Settle this one please. Palmer, Dobson, Cuellar, McNally or Maddux, Avery, Smoltz and Glavine?
Mark P
9:06
I'd lean towards Atlanta, as their guys had the overall higher HOF-level ceiling.

Kim to the Angels for Adell?
