Vladdy.  I know he is still young,  but is this what we can expect of him?
Mark P

The fact that Guerrero has gotten worse over the last two season instead of better is a big concern for the Jays, who basically built their roster around the assumption that he'd be producing superstar numbers on a consistent basis.

2021 seemed to indicate that the Jays were right in that assumption, but Guerrero has been only good (115 wRC+) this year rather than great or even pretty good.  Hitting coach Guillermo Martinez has taken a ton of heat from Toronto fans and certainly looks to be on the hot seat this winter, unless the Jays lineup can really turn it around

Orioles gonna extend Adley or Gunnar this winter?
Mark P
8:02
It'd be surprising if they didn't try, since if Elias is basically copying the Astros' rebuild playbook, locking up young stars was a key plank of Houston's strategy.

There ever been a season where every team in a division finished with a winning record?
Mark P
8:04
Off the top of my head, the 2005 NL East had every team win at least 81 games, but I think someone finished with an exact .500 record

Do you see a Kyle Tucker extension this off season?  If so what do you expect to look like?
Mark P
8:07
If the Astros stick to their preferred model of only offering six-year maximums, no.  Then again, they extended Altuve when he still had a couple of years left on his prior deal, so I guess you could technically (but not officially) say they bent the rules for one special player already.  Tucker certainly looks like a good enough player to merit a longer extension.

Could you see Ian Happ being traded next year? Cubs top hitting prospects are outfielders and Suzuki has a no trade clause
Mark P
8:08
Happ also has a no-trade clause in the three-year extension he signed with Chicago back in April.  He isn't going anywhere.

If only money is what Ohtani is interested in, no other team can provide it than Toronto. Rogers television can make any number of back door deals with Japanese Corporations. The Fox station teams can all only provide the exact same support as the television deal can provide.
Mark P
8:10
As a Jays fan, I support this stance.  Maybe the rumor of Ohtani wanting to play on the west coast meant that he wanted to play on the west coast of Lake Ontario.

Luken Baker. Traded this off season? He has no apparent home at STL next year.
Mark P
8:12
Baker is as good of a candidate as any to be dealt, since the Cardinals have simply too many guys for too few spots.

Of course, the trick is that for all of this surplus, a lot of those position players had underwhelming 2023 seasons, leaving the front office with some difficulty in figuring out who's truly expendable

Acuna 40-40?
Mark P
8:13
Acuna needs 14 more homers in a month and a half, so I'd tend to think no.  Especially since after tonight, Atlanta only has three more games against the Mets

Which wildcard hopeful can least afford an injury to one of their top pitcher or hitter?  Toronto, Boston, Seattle?
Mark P
8:15
Toronto already lost their best hitter in Bichette, which has naturally stalled the offense.  The Jays have so little depth that losing just about any starter (let alone Bichette) is a big setback to the team

Hey Mark. You think the Twins will suffer consequences from standing pat at the deadline? They could have sold off Gray, Maeda, MAT, Solano, maybe even Gallo for prospects…
Mark P
8:17
Twins have pretty solidly built up a lead in the ALC, so having a partial selloff at the deadline might have not have been the right tactic.  I get the bigger-picture aspect and Minnesota doesn't seem like a true title contender this year, but I can also get why the front office wouldn't want to demoralize the clubhouse by moving some veterans

8:17
Who you got in as division champs and in the playoffs this season?
Mark P
8:18
I haven't thought two seconds about the NFL yet, but I'll be lazy and predict the Chiefs and Eagles in a Super Bowl rematch.  Philly seems like clearly the best NFC team, and it's hard to pick against Mahomes.

Feels like along with a new president of baseball ops, the Mets will also have a new manager next year

What pitchers could you see the Braves being interested in this off season and do you think they will exercise Rosario’s option?
Mark P
8:23
Atlanta has a $9MM club option on Rosario for 2024, and his numbers are a little below average this year (if much better than his disastrous 2022 showing). My guess is that the Braves don't exercise the option, since they'll try to find better production at a lower price
8:24
As for pitching, it'll somewhat depend on whether or not Charlie Morton retires or is willing to come back for another year.  If the latter, I can see the Braves just picking up his option and standing pat with their rotation.

If everyone is healthy (big if, of course) Atlanta has more than enough interesting rotation candidates.  They could go into 2024 seeing how Spring Training plays out, and then look at add in-season with a trade if more of a pitching need develops

Is the Nats success this season, along with a decent farm system, enough to entice some top tier free agents this offseason?
Mark P
8:28
Jayson Werth isn't walking through that door!

More seriously, Washington probably doesn't think they're far enough along in the rebuild to start aiming to contend as early as 2024.  In the NL East alone, the Braves, Phillies, and Marlins will make things difficult, and the Mets might be better with a change of management and a roster shakeup or some sort.
8:29
My guess is that the Nats wait until or perhaps 2026 to see what they have in Crews and Wood, before they start to get serious about contending

It says nothing about Happ having a No trade in Spotrac. Where do you get that he does?
Mark P

At the time of the extension, Joel Sherman of the NY Post reported the no-trade protection

Who do the Yankees fire?
Mark P
8:32
It seems like it has to be it for Boone.  Not that the Yankees' struggles are entirely his fault by any means, but the manager is always more apt to go before the GM, and Cashman might still be too much of a fixture
Milwaukee Brewers

Where are they playing in ten years?

Milwaukee
Despite the recent reports, there's still a long time before the team's lease is up after the 2030 season, so there's still plenty of time to work out some kind of deal for stadium renovations
