I'd bet it's really "grow what you can, buy the rest." Which really should be every team's essential philosophy.
They'll probably end up with a sturdy veteran type that can play OF. Desmond has been mentioned, seems about as good a guess as any.

Am I packing for Arizona?
Jeffrey Todd
2:57
Not unless he really wants to go, Nats are fine letting that happen, and DBacks are ready to send back some real assets to DC.
Under contract for 2 years.

Think Braves go after Ramos since they'll have flowers and Rocker until he gets healthy and they could over a one year deal with a high priced option or an opt out type of contract?
Jeffrey Todd
2:58
Ramos is going to be pursued by teams with opportunism on their minds and a need behind the plate. Especially those in the AL.
Biggest question to me is whether true contenders will find a way to go after him. Really interested to see how it unfolds.

Why wouldn't the Phillies pick up Morton's 9 Mil option?
Jeffrey Todd
2:58
It converted to a mutual option with the trade.
2:59
(Or something like that, don't quote me exactly.)

What do the Yankees do with Mateo and Torres? Scouts seem to like Torres better at this point. He's younger and played better. Do they trade Mateo or convert him to outfield?
Jeffrey Todd

Plenty of time to let that sort itself out. Rarely makes sense to resolve these kinds of things at the prospect stage.

How much trade value does Gselleman and Lugo have?
Jeffrey Todd
3:00
Not as much as you might hope.
Gsellman did look legit interesting though.

You almost never talk about the AL Central, and virtually never about my Tigers. No significant contracts up, but no budget flexibility and no MLB-ready prospects other than Joe Jiminez. Any moves for the Tigers this offseason?
Jeffrey Todd
3:01
Well I said I don't see how they can trade JDM. Otherwise, I really don't know what they'll do. Have trouble seeing how they'll trim payroll without letting Cam Maybin walk, which will mean a hole in center. Can't fix pen without adding salary (other than, yeah, calling up Jimenez).

Do Braves trade Kemp to AL team, or are they serious about keeping him in LF?
Jeffrey Todd
3:02
Think they'll hold.

What the best FA catcher options out there for Mets if they decide to move on from D'Arnaud?
Jeffrey Todd
3:03
Wieters and Castro are the two best FA catchers ... since people keep asking re ATL and other teams.
No Stras for Nats if they advance. : (

Yunel Escobar gets traded again this offseason? Had another solid year, but Angels have multiple needs and could plug a few players at 3rd. Think the Mets or Braves line up at all?
Jeffrey Todd
3:03
He's the kind of guy they need. Solid player at a reasonable enough price on a short-term deal. I think he stays.
Dylan
3:04
Could you see the Yanks trading for someone like Gio Gonzalez or Jaime Garcia? I feel like they could use another lefty in the rotation.
Jeffrey Todd
3:05
Yes, not really b/c they are lefties, but b/c they need to add a reasonably priced, solid arm. Eovaldi is as good as gone, so this is basically his salary slot.
3:06
This is kinda also why I see those teams picking up their options even if they hope not to keep them in the rotation. (No sure thing.) That kind of asset can be turned into, say, Brett Gardner. And maybe you'd rather that than pay more for more years in FA for another player.

Giants radio this morning said 50 mil coming off the books but 25 in salary increases. If you're the GM, how do you spend the $?
Jeffrey Todd
3:07
I don't know what they are basing that on, and haven't looked, but it's not the right way to approach payroll. It's pretty simple. Look at the guaranteed future dollars and build in reasonable arbitration expectations using MLBTR projections and reaching views on what the team will likely do.
3:08
Not sure why people talk about what's "coming off the books" so often. It's not coming off the books, it was never there.
(Also I'm not sure but ... where is that 50 mil coming from in SFG?)
Sorry not trying to rant at you, ha.

Which upcoming free agent has lost the most value during the season? Lind?
Jeffrey Todd
3:09
Total dollars? Maybe Bautista.
Could throw Cashner in there, too.

Does Greinke return to his old form in 2017?
Jeffrey Todd
3:10
Maybe his old trajectory, which at his age might make him something like a 3.40 ERA true value pitcher.
