Earlier in the chat you mentioned that you can see the Yankees being done this offseason, which I agree with. But if they do decide to continue spending, what free agents/trades can you realistically see then making
Mark P
3:15
Technically I meant they were probably done with adding starting pitching, not done with moves overall.  Bullpen additions seem likely, and I still wonder if Gleyber Torres might get dealt to free up space in the outfield
Er, infield

Would it shock you if neither Texas or Arizona fail to make the postseason in 2024?
Mark P
3:17
Somewhere between "surprised" and "shocked," probably.  Obviously anything can happen in baseball, but both of them missing the postseason entirely seems far-fetched.

Now, I say that given that even last year, they both only narrowly made the playoffs at all.

Could a deep farm system like the Os have actually hinder finding a fair value trade? If the Os are pushing one or two top prospects more than others, would that turn off a team’s desire for those guys, thinking the Os know something they don’t given their options to trade from?
Mark P
3:19
This is possible, though the deep farm system is a hindrance in another way since rival teams probably all come in immediately shooting for Holliday, Cowser, and the guys at the very top of the list.  Whereas the Orioles will come in offering, say, guys in the 20-25 range on their ranking list.

Then it becomes a dance of who is more willing to budge towards the middle ground.

How long until the Yankees bite the bullet and cut Stanton? Doesn’t seem like they can afford to wait out his contract and keep a very expensive and very injury-prone Judge in the outfield for four more years.
Mark P
3:23
Dropping Stanton would be a big help to the Yankees' roster crunch, and yet he still has flashes of his old power that I can get (beyond just the money) why the Yankees might not want to give up on him just yet.

If he has another season like 2023, however, that might be enough

Do you view Casas as untouchable or could he be moved for a starting pitcher with Devers sliding to 1B.
Mark P
3:25
I can see the positional logic, but Casas has such potential that he has only started to tap into.  While perhaps not truly "untouchable," he's probably pretty close.
BillMuellerLite
3:26
Who's to say Devers could actually handle 1B?
Mark P
3:27
This is another factor.  But, having Casas/Devers as the 1B/DH combo isn't at all a bad future.

3:28
true or false -if the Giants add one of Bellinger/Chapman there is still a logjam of Davis/Flores or Yaz/Conforto to be resolved.
Mark P
3:28
Technically true, but the odd men out would still have some trade value
Sam
3:29
Bellinger, Chapman, and/or Hoskins...o/u 1.5 of these that the Cubs sign (and who they would be)...
Mark P
3:31
My take is that Hoskins probably isn't an option now that Busch has been acquired.  So between the other two, I'll lean towards Chapman just because 3B is more of a clear need.  Obviously Busch and PCA aren't proven as big leaguers, but technically, their presence provides a slightly lesser need for Bellinger.
Though Matt Shaw getting some tryouts at third base might mean Chicago doesn't want to necessarily block that position either

3:31
What do you make about all the talk from Cards management? The budget is higher or lower, ‘we’re going to sign 3 starters!’, ‘we’re going to sign 2 relievers!’, etc. Why do they keep talking?
Mark P
3:32
It is a little surprising to me that Mozeliak is open about the specific number of targets he has in mind.  Appreciate the candor at least, though it does seemingly create a bit more pressure when he could just say "we're going to address the rotation"
Unclemike
3:33
Everyone is after Cease, What if the Cubs pivot and go after Robert? PCA, Alcantara and Triantos for Robert. Maybe Arias as he he is far away and taking up a 40 man spot the Cubs could use. Thoughts?
Mark P
3:34
The White Sox would want more pitching added.  And given their asking prices for Cease, they'd be wanting the absolute moon and stars for Robert

With a limited bonus pool, are teams better off making one major intl. singing  for most of their pool, or spreading the money among more prospects ?
Mark P
3:35
It kind of varies from year to year, since if teams are particularly high on a certain prospect, they'll give him a very big chunk of the pool.
3:36
I do kind of miss the old system where a team would go far over the old spending limit in one splurge of a year, and then voluntarily spend the next two signing periods in the "penalty box."
IDK about IKF
3:37
seems like an even stranger signing now that Santiago Espinal was offered and then accepted a new contract and avoided either arbitration or being DFA'd.  Seems like the Jays the utility position covered with Espinal, Biggio, Clement and Schneider...not to mention two of their better prospects are infielders in Addison Berger and Orvelis Martinez
Mark P
3:38
IKF is probably a better (or at least a more proven) fielder than anyone in that group, but also literally everyone else has more hitting upside.  It was an odd signing for the Jays, particularly for $15MM
John Doe
3:38
Does any other team than the Braves and Dodgers actually has a chance at winning the NL pennant this year?
Mark P
3:39
I know, right?  Can you imagine, like, if the Diamondbacks won the NL pennant?  Or the Phillies?  Wouldn't either of those completely far-fetched scenarios be wild?!

Hey Mark, thanks as always for doing a Sunday chat. I've been wanting to get this in for weeks now: if Alonso decides he doesn't want to stay in NY (so no Mets, no Yankees), what are the Giants chances of signing him? If LA already has 1B and DH locked down with Freeman and Ohtani, respectively, it seems like we'd have a decent shot. Maybe competing with Chicago, San Diego, Philly, and Boston at worst. Right?
Mark P
3:42
The Cubs might not be in depending on what happens with Bellinger, the Padres might not be able to spend big, and Philly/Boston have 1B spoken for with Harper and Casas

So yeah, the Giants would seemingly have a better shot than any of those particular teams.  Wade is a good player but the Giants might flip him if it means getting Alonso

Is Byron Buxton tradable?
Mark P
3:44
Doubtful.  No player is ever entirely untradeable, per se, but what rival team would look at Buxton's contract and injury history and feel compelled to make a move?

3:45
Doing what is required to sign Alonso is what the new Las Vegas team might do for its inaugural season.
Mark P
3:46
Alonso is set for free agency next winter, and the Vegas ballpark doesn't open until 2028.  So the timeline doesn't match up, and the Athletics absolutely won't be increasing spending in the interim
