That would be the most likely asking price for Duran, yet San Diego is so thin on rotation arms right now that it's hard to see them being too keen to give away any pitcher who can help them in 2024

11:55
Why would the Brewers effectively give Adrian Houser to the Mets, only to follow up with the free agent signing of Jakob Junis?
Mark P
11:55
Because the Brewers might think Junis will be better than Houser, probably

Rate the astros offseason
Mark P
11:57
I'd give it a B.  The Astros didn't have a ton of holes to fill, necessarily, and I think any heavy lifting they might yet do could be saved for the trade deadline.

Jesse Chavez signed with the White Sox recently. What is your prediction of how he ends us back on the Braves this year since he always seems to come back?
Mark P
11:59
As we've seen, the Braves and White Sox are willing to make trades with each other.  Assuming Chavez stays healthy, I absolutely think he'll be on Atlanta's roster by August
Twins Fan
11:59
How do you feel about Buxton’s ability to play centerfield full time?
Mark P
12:00
Not good.  The Twins absolutely need some kind of viable backup plan for CF, since Buxton's track record makes it impossible to trust that he can stay healthy

12:01
How do you see Jung Hoo Lee doing in San Francisco? I’d say .300 hitter with 30 homer potential. Do you agree? Am I a bit too high on him?
Mark P
12:02
.300 hitter yes, 30-homer power no.  Lee didn't hit many homers in the KBO League, so suddenly breaking out as a power bat in San Francisco seems unlikely.

However, he can still generate "power" in the form of doubles and triples in that spacious ballpark, if not necessarily homers

Could the Rockies sell high on Nolan Jones if they don’t think he can replicate last year’s numbers? A few red flags in his underlying metrics…
Mark P
12:04
Doubtful, since the Rockies likely (and understandably) see Jones as a building block.

Though if they're looking for a deal, the Guardians would probably be happy to offer Juan Brito back

Are the Padres really going into spring training with Tatis and Azocar as their outfielders? I’m all for the young guys but they need to get some veterans.
Mark P
12:04
SD will (and basically has to) acquire at least one more everyday outfielder, since their depth is almost non-existent.

Cleveland’s front office used to be known as one of the tops in the league. After another offseason of doing absolutely nothing, is it time to start throwing the word overrated out there? They’ve known of the MIF log jam for years. The outfield has been weak, and instead they trade Jones for… another MIF. At this point what are they doing? Seems illogical how they are constructing a roster.
Mark P
12:07
The Guards' front office has had a rough stretch of guessing wrong on hitters, i.e. parting ways with Jones, Diaz, Benson, and Caminero.

But while they're not perfect, the Guardians have done a very good job of remaining competitive for years now, despite pretty severe payroll constraints.
And hey, 47.9% of readers in this chat seem to think Cleveland will win a title before 2048, so they've got that working for them!

With the Padres enormous lack of outfielders, does bringing up Jackson Merrill make sense? He doesn’t necessarily have to go to the outfield, but he could push somebody out there. I don’t know who that would be but bringing up Merrill could give another bat to the lineup instead of Jose Azocar who is nowhere near a major league bat.
Mark P
12:10
Merrill has yet to play any Triple-A ball, and he has all of five games under his belt as an outfielder.  So if I'm the Padres, I'm hesitant about forcing one my top prospect into an unfamiliar situation to address a roster deficit, rather than just letting Merrill develop at this own pace
Ranager Question
12:12
If Langford shows he is ready this spring, I was wondering what type of trade package you thought Taveras would draw? Thanks for the chat.
Mark P
12:13
As good as Langford looks, this might be another case where a team probably doesn't want to rush a potential franchise piece.  That doesn't mean a Taveras deal might not happen, but perhaps at the trade deadline when and if Langford has gotten some Triple-A time and proved he can handle it in the majors

Adames to Miami in exchange for a proven SP seems to work, doesn’t it?
Mark P
12:14
The Marlins aren't likely to move one of their prominent starters for one year of Adames.  That's the kind of move a team makes if they're all-in on a World Series push, and Miami hasn't done a thing in that direction this winter

12:14
Why don't the Dodgers get a lock down closer?  All of this investment, why not lock down the last 3 innings?
Mark P
12:15
Phillips has been awfully good the last two years.  LA likely thinks they're in good shape at closer, if perhaps some more bullpen depth would help
A baseball question
12:17
How come more teams don’t trade within their divisions? If you have an opportunity to make a team better I say do it, no matter the circumstances. I’d like to see more Yankees/red Sox trades or Astros/Mariners type deals
Mark P
12:19
Some teams seem to have a stricter policy than others about trading with division rivals.  But i like the old-school mentality of not wanting to help a team you're in direct competition with, since theoretically, every team should approach trades as win-win propositions.

Also, if a trade with a division rival doesn't work out, it simply stings a bit more to see the player you dealt away break out as a star with an arch-enemy
Philly
12:20
Will Jensen be traded to the Phillies?
Mark P
12:20
This seems like the kind of move the Phillies seem likelier to make, rather than signing Bellinger or one of the big FA pitchers

12:21
Was the Witt contract insane or what? Vastttt overpay for a decent player.
Mark P
12:23
Disagree, and i actually like the deal a lot from KC's perspective.  Witt is pretty close to being a sure thing given how he's already performed amidst all the hype, so if you're a smaller-market team looking to make a big investment in a young player, this is essentially an ideal situation.

Is Posey a HOFer? I would say no.
Mark P
12:23
I'd say yes, and my opinion may be a moo point (i.e. Joey Tribbiani) since I think Posey gets in on the first ballot

Can you repost your report on salaries for the top 50 players that came out before free agency started?

We update our top 50 list with the actual dollar figures when the players sign, so you can easily compare and contrast our projections with their final contracts

Re: San Diego needing an outfielder. Does another trade with the Nats make sense? Lane Thomas would be a nice fit in SD.
Mark P
12:27
Thomas would be a wonderful fit in San Diego, sliding right into that left field role (Tatis obviously isn't moving out of RF).  But again, the question is what kind of deal could be lined up between the Nationals and the Padres for two years of Thomas, since Washington will also want pitching.  Duran has more team control but Thomas is a lot more proven as a major leaguer
