Do the jays sign a fourth outfielder like Duvall or Pham? I worry what happens if springer and kiermaier get hurt. Both were healthier than normal last year
Mark P
12:24
Both of those guys are looking for more than "fourth outfielder" playing time, but I agree that either would be a great fit in Toronto.

And, an argument can certainly be made that either could start for the Jays and Varsho then becomes the fourth outfielder.

Positive reinforcement. Vladdy is good again, Springer is good, BO is the same, Turner is legit, and the pitching holds up. Are the Jays playoff bound?
Mark P
12:25
If all this happens then sure, the Jays are going to have a great year.

12:25
When you guys update an article several hours after the original post, what is actually updated? I don’t notice anything new in some of them. No more time stamps?
Mark P
12:27
We often post the day's biggest story at the top of the site when our coverage ends in the evening.  So we do often clean up timestamps, multiple updates with additional contract details, multiple "reporter X said this..." sentences, etc.
12:28
Basically just so we can have a cleaner, easier-to-read version of the post for the archives, and for everyone to reference in later weeks, months, and years
Giants
12:29
What would be the compensation to San Diego if Snell signs with the Giants now that they have already lost a draft pick to Chapman?
Mark P
12:30
The Giants would lose their third-highest pick in next year's draft.  However, San Diego's compensation isn't tied to the Giants' status.  Since the Padres paid into the luxury tax last season, their compensatory pick for Snell would fall after the fourth round
draft
12:31
when do you like the draft better -June or July ?
Mark P
12:32
June.  Creates more breathing room between the draft and the trade deadline.

12:32
Do you think the poor free agent market not only had to do with fewer of the typical big spenders participating, but also that those teams (especially Mets and Padres) already dealt their guys to teams who chose to tie up money in those players (Verlander, Scherzer, Soto)?
Mark P
12:34
It was essentially a perfect storm of circumstances.  Including the factors you mentioned, you had TV rights issues impacting half the league, the Mets/Padres in particular not spending much, Ohtani/Yamamoto taking up all of the Dodgers' attention, plus the simple fact that a lot of the big names on this year's market have some clear red flags.

Do you see a turnaround for Kris Bryant this year in Colorado now that he appears to be healthy?
Mark P
12:37
It remains to be seen if Bryant can hold up over a full season, but if gets 500+ plate appearances, I'd expect some pretty good numbers
Cubs fan
12:39
why did the Cubs not take Chapman at 18 million despite where their current cap room is at?
Mark P
12:39
Chapman might've been willing to take that contract to return to the Bay Area and to play for Melvin again, but not to go into a whole new experience in Chicago
TC
12:40
Why are the Red Sox not all over Jordan Montgomery?
Mark P
12:41
Seems like they're very interested in Montgomery, but only at their preferred price rather than what Boras is asking for
Pages
12:42
Andy Pages looks ready and looks the part. What do you see his 2024 season looking like? Full year in AAA, midseason call up, break spring with the MLB club? Traded at the deadline even?
Mark P
12:44
Pages was kind of a forgotten man due to his injury-shortened 2023.  Not to go too nuts over a handful of Spring Training results, but he's certainly put himself back on the radar now.  Your timeline seems pretty logical, though my guess is that L.A. doesn't trade him
JD Martinez
12:45
If I slide to the 10-12 mil range, will the Guardians bite? I might double their HR total.
Mark P
12:46
It's unfortunate that even $10-12MM might be beyond Cleveland's price range.  There's also the more basic roster issue that Manzardo and Naylor have the 1B/DH spots covered, and the Guardians are keen to see what Manzardo can do in the majors.

Does Chang’s injury have any impact at all with H. Ramirez staying with the Rays?
Mark P
12:47
Chang was a minor league signing who the Rays probably viewed as depth, rather than a clearly viable candidate for the 26-man.  His injury probably doesn't change much in their bigger picture

How about the Twins trading Farmer and using the salary dump to help lesson the blow of a Clevenger signing ???   I’d really like that!!!!!
Mark P
12:51
Farmer at $6.05MM is a bit of an inflated price, and I'm not sure what team takes that deal entirely off of Minnesota's books.  If anything, I was a little surprised the Twins tendered him a contract, though Farmer is still a good player to have around given how the Twins have since subtracted from their infield corps

I think people are sleeping on the 2024 WhiteSox. I won't and shouldn't expecta shot at playoffs, but a .500 record seems very plausible to me? Do you even consider a .500 W.S. record or just have them finishing near bottom?
Mark P
12:53
A .500 record would be a fantastic result for the White Sox, but I just don't see it.  I don't think this is a very good team, and a ton would have to break right just to get up to 81 wins

12:55
With Christopher Morel seemingly getting a real shot at  3B, could you see Cubs having late interest in signing JDM for DH?
Mark P
12:56
Not totally out of the realm of possibility, but signing Martinez then locks down the DH spot for Morel, Busch, Cooper, Wisdom, etc.  Also if Crow-Armstrong gets some time on the big league roster, keeping the DH spot free allows for PCA, Happ, Suzuki, Bellinger at 1B, and then another bat in the lineup as the DH.

Draft in Offseason because all others do theirs then but they all allow Draft Picks in Trades.
Mark P
12:58
Doing the draft in the winter is too much of a disruption to the college baseball season.  I do agree that trading picks should be allowed beyond just the competitive balance rounds

I feel bad for these players who finally reach free agency and get played. Your thoughts?
Mark P
1:00
It's tough since timing is everything.  I get why teams might be hesitant to sign Snell to a long-term deal, but from Snell's perspective, he's got to be wondering what more he has to do for a platform year, and yet he's still getting squeezed.

How good a catcher is varsho? Gives the jays  more flexibility in the lineup of they occasionally used him there
Mark P
1:01
Moving Varsho back to catcher (even in a part-time capacity) seems like a waste of an excellent defensive outfielder.

Do you think Kim or Adames are traded before the deadline? If not, do you see either signing contract extensions with their respective teams, or will they be free agents in the offseason?
Mark P
1:03
Both Kim and Adames will reach free agency, since neither the Padres or the Brewers seem to be in the position right now to offer big-money extensions.  Since I expect both the Padres and Brewers to be competitive, a deadline trade of either player might not be all that likely, though obviously that changes in a hurry if either team struggles

Having a defined free agent period, like the NFL for example, would be a great plan for MLB.
