Still unlikely, since the ownership transfer is still at least a few weeks away from being finalized, and Angelos' death might create some minor delay just for logistical reasons.  Also, there's no guarantee that Rubenstein will come in and immediately sign off on bigger spending right away.

If a team has to pay a luxury tax, where do those funds actually go?
Mark P
9:55
It's split up between player benefit funds, retirement accounts for MLBPA members, and towards teams who have increased their local revenues

Will Duran, Porter or Leiter be on different teams come August?
Mark P
9:56
If the Rangers are going to be limiting spending until their TV situation is sorted, trading top young talent for deadline help might be their preferred method of obtaining roster upgrades rather than taking on money in trades.
9:57
That said, I'm not sure if these specific players will be the ones shopped, particularly Porter or Leiter given the importance of young pitching

I'm not holding out much hope for this, but....will anyone pick up the most recent and more expensive incarnation of Bradley Zimmer....that would be Myles Straw?
Mark P
9:59
There seems a zero percent chance that a team would claim away the rest of Straw's contract.  In fact, a team interested in speed and defensive help in the outfield could literally just get Bradley Zimmer, who was released by the Rockies today.

I did wonder this offseason if an enterprising team might try offer to take Straw's contract off the Guardians' hands as a sweetener in a trade for pitching or something, but given how many teams were reluctant to spend this winter, that was obviously a no-go

Don't forget the Matt Chapman trade. Probably the best trade the Blue Jays have made under Atkins
Mark P
10:02
Chapman too, that was a notable omission on my part.

This is all why this era of Jays baseball is a little frustrating.  The team has made plenty of good moves, but just can't seem to get everything going smoothly at the same time.

If offers are similar, does Montgomery tell the Yanks to take a hike since they gave up on him in the past
Mark P
10:04
Only Montgomery knows what kind of hard feelings may or may not exist in regards to his tenure with the Yankees.  Could be that Cashman said "looks like you can pitch in the playoffs, my bad" during their first meeting and laughed it all off.
Brenton Doyle
10:05
Do you see Colorado signing me to a similar long-term extension to the one Tovar signed today? What about my rifle mate, Nolan Jones?
Mark P
10:06
A Doyle extension would come at a much lower price tag than Tovar.  And, frankly, the Myles Straw extension might serve as a warning about the risk of signing a Doyle-esque player to a long-term deal.

How much to GM's or POBO's talk to each other regarding FA's? As in Player A's agent tells Team A they have an offer of 5 yrs/100 million from Team B. Do the GM's reach out to each other to confirm said offer?
Mark P
10:08
That could be viewed as collusion in some circles, and don't forget that these teams are also competing with each other.  So if Team B's general manager doesn't have any interest in Player A, why not tell Team A's GM "oh yeah, sure, we're interested" to see if Team A will toss away more money?
Finally

it begins this week. Who do you like in the NL East?
Mark P
10:09
Atlanta, with the Phillies as a wild card

Any chance Texas might swoop in and sign Jordan Montgomery?
Mark P
10:10
I felt for much of the winter that Montgomery would re-sign with the Rangers, but it seems like their payroll situation is too much of an obstacle.  Signing Lorenzen might've closed the door on the chances of Montgomery coming back to Arlington.
