What can the White Sox do to possibly start the rebuild?? Trade Eloy? Trade a healthy Roberts? Geesh
Mark P
9:15
Trading Cease was the "start" of the rebuild, and Chris Getz has already said the team is open to listening on basically anyone.

Does J. D. Davis get shipped off at the deadline to cash in some value since the A’s almost certainly don’t make the playoffs?
Mark P
9:17
Davis will have to get healthy and get on track at the plate first, but yeah, he's a clear trade candidate

Have you heard anything at all about Noah Syndergaard?  It's stunning he hasn't been given at least a minor league deal somewhere.
Mark P
9:21
The Pirates and Padres were the only teams known to have interest in Syndergaard last winter, and it could be that Syndergaard was still holding for some kind of low guarantee rather than just a minors contract.
But it's a sign of how much he has struggled and how much his stock has fallen that it has come to this

I want to play for my hometown Phillies. Propose a trade that makes sense
Mark P
9:28
As has been noted several times about Trout over the years, he apparently prefers to keep some space between his hometown and his professional career, and wouldn't love the extra pressure of playing for the Phillies.  And, Trout has stated that he wants to stay with the Angels.  And, I find it hard to believe that the Angels would move Trout unless he demanded a move.

But, for the sake of this hypothetical discussion, the Angels would want a package reflecting Trout's superstar status, with only maybe a bit of bend acknowledging his age and injury history.  The Phillies would have to give up at least their top three prospects, and perhaps one of Walker or Castellanos for partial salary offset.  Honestly, I'm probably understating what the Angels would ask for, since I'm sure they'd gun for the moon and stars for a long time before coming around to more reasonable terms.
9:29
And the other factor is Trout's no-trade clause, so if he specifically wanted to go only to Philly, that would also impact the Angels' leverage in demands

Are the Pirates done?  I know it is early but the lineup is just awful.  The power guys just sit there and dont swing. Contact guys swing outside the zone.  The lineup just seems listless

I know it's early, but is it time to sound the alarm for the pirates? Young guys like Cruz and Davis not looking great?
Mark P
9:32
A lot would've had to have broken right for the Pirates to really contend this year, since a .500 finish or 82 wins was a more realistic goal than a playoff spot.  And again, it's still early here, but the lineup wasn't terribly inspiring even if one or two of the younger guys had broken out.

The Pirates' front office clearly didn't think this team was quite ready, given the lack of impact in their offseason moves.

Do I go on the IL?

Seems that way, unless the swelling goes down in a few days' time.

What’s the deal with Esteury Ruiz? Is he a potential cornerstone piece or is he likely to end up like Billy Hamilton (the recent one, not the hall of famer)
Mark P
9:38
If he can be even an average hitter, his speed makes him an immensely valuable asset to the A's or any team.  Hamilton is the easiest comp to make, though keep in mind, Hamilton also had a secondary asset in elite defense, whereas Ruiz drew mixed reviews at best as a CF
9:39
He's an interesting player to watch, and if you're the A's, why not let him keep adjusting in the majors since he doesn't have much left to prove at Triple-A

Are the Mets for real?  Where is JD Martinez?
Mark P

The plan is to activate JDM on Friday

And I think the Mets will be a competitive enough team to finish around .500, if not a playoff spot

Hi Mark!  Did the Blue Jay's hurt their teams offense when they remodeled their outfield walks or is it a coincidence?
Mark P
9:45
The home/road splits from last season seemed to lend some credence to this theory, as the Jays were markedly better hitters on the road than in Toronto.  But, in the early going this season, they've hit better at home than on the road.

I'm no engineering expert, but some have speculated on some environmental factors that go into large-scale construction projects like the Rogers Centre renovations --- anything from changes in wind direction, or even how the air quality is impacted by all of the settling concrete.

Kerry Carpenter legit?
Mark P
9:46
Carpenter is one of the more underrated hitters in the sport, and he is one of the few Detroit bats doing much of anything right now

What's up with Snell? I realize he didn't have a ST, but neither did Montgomery, and he didn't look nearly as rusty as Snell. Thanks Mark.
Mark P
9:49
You never know how different players will react to unusual offseason circumstances, and hindsight being 20-20, Snell probably should've gotten a couple of minor league starts to knock off the rust.

Do you think it will get to the point where Fisher will trade any A's player who gets hot for absolutely nothing?
Mark P
9:50
I doubt Fisher interferes much or at all in baseball operations apart from the overall "don't spend" edict.

I've been on the podcast a couple of times, and was even the fill-in host for a couple of episodes last fall when Darragh was on vacation.

Does Kimbrel make the HOF., and what would it take for a non closer reliever to get in?
Mark P
9:56
I think Kimbrel probably gets elected.

Re: the non-closer reliever in Cooperstown. Such a pitcher would have to be a multi-inning fireman type who can get the occasional save, but would come in for any high-leverage circumstance whenever it might happen.  Imagine someone like 2016-17 Andrew Miller, except over a dozen seasons.
Missing piece
9:57
What should the Brewers do at/before the deadline to have a shot to win the world series? Or too far behind the top teams? (Excluding "too early in the season" and "a lot can change between now and the deadline")
Mark P
9:58
Rotation help is the obvious answer.  I'm not sure I believe Milwaukee's lineup is "this" good, but if it ain't broke, don't fix it.  Getting Williams back around midseason will also provide a natural boost to the pen.
