Pirates started hot and have cooled off since. Is a .500 season considered a win for them this season?
Mark P
8:03
Absolutely, that would be a great step forward

The Nats have finished another week at .500, and their big prospects still sit in the minors. Oakland is the subject of all kinds of discussion, including people asking about the playoffs. The Nats sit in a Wild Card spot at the same way-too-early part of the season. What might it take for people to stop placing them 25th or lower in Power Rankings?
Mark P
8:05
The Athletics' situation is so uniquely bad that it gains a lot of attention, whereas the Nationals being a "normal bad" rebuilding team tends to fly under the radar.

Like I said last week, I don't think the Nats are a legit playoff contender or anything, and I'll keep saying it until we get a larger sample size of games here.  The fact that they're playing pretty decent ball (this weekend's defense aside) is a good sign that the rebuild is taking shape, however.

Is it too early for me too panic and send down either Torkelson or Keith? Also should I consider trading from our surplus of pitching prospects to bring in a consistent, controllable bat?
Mark P
8:07
A demotion wouldn't be unwarranted, as some time at Triple-A might help either.  Keith is the likelier of the two to be optioned just because Torkelson is more established (to some extent), but these kind of internal upgrades seem likelier than the Tigers making some big trade this early in the year
8:08
If they're in contention at the deadline, it surely seems likely Detroit will make some kind of move, and moving pitching for hitting is very logical.

Should Washington consider trading Luis Garcia? I know he has a few years of control left, but that’s also what could get the Nationals a haul for a player they were supposedly on the verge of giving up on in March.
Mark P
8:11
Other teams can see Garcia's huge BABIP as well as the Nationals can, so some regression seems inevitable.  But, if he is getting things together as a hitter, that only reinforces his chances of being a longer-term possibility in Washington, not with another team

I know the Jays are only 16-19 but the season feels lost already. Tell me I’m wrong. Please I need some reassurance.
Mark P
8:14
The pitching and defense are really good, and are more or less single-handedly keeping the Jays somewhat respectable.  The lack of offense (except for today) is hard to watch, and it puts extra pressure on the pitching to be perfect, making any blown leads stand out all the more.

Going into the season, Toronto didn't look like the roster of a playoff team to me, and unfortunately it looks like this take was correct

Who do the Pirates bump in their rotarion once Skenes is called up?  Can they get a competitive balance pick for that person?
Mark P
8:17
Teams value their draft picks like gold, so unless the Pirates offered Keller or Jones (which they wouldn't), such a trade isn't happening.

Priester or Falter seem like pretty easy bumps.  The bottom-line numbers may be good, but the secondary numbers aren't anything impressive

The Twins lost today, so the magic is over!

Despite the 19-16 record, is it fair to say that the Rangers are inconsistent so far this year?
Mark P
8:19
That's a decent assessment.  Texas is kind of middle in the pack in every facet, and playing well enough to bank wins even though such a big chunk of their ideal roster is on the IL.  That bodes well for their chances once some of these players start getting healthy.
Joe Espada
8:20
Am I on the hot seat for astros slow start?
Mark P
8:21
It's not Espada's fault the pitching staff is missing so much personnel, or what the bullpen has been so inexplicably shaky

Fedde going to turn into a pumpkin before CWS can trade him? Surely, they will move him by the deadline, yes?
Mark P
8:23
Fedde's underlying metrics aren't great, so teams won't exactly be offering the sun and moon for him.  The White Sox might be open to selling as high as they can on Fedde and moving some of his salary, but there's also a chance they wait for the offseason.

Josh Bell for the Pirates?
Mark P
8:24
As amusing as that would be, it could be that the Pirates have seen enough of Bell's inconsistency
Marc
8:25
Are the Mariners for real and should they upgrade from France?
Mark P
8:26
France is hardly the only underperforming hitter in Seattle, but you'd expect more than basically just league-average offense from the first base spot.  This seems like a potential target spot for Dipoto come the deadline.
Tampa Tom
8:27
When will we see Junior Caminero for good in Tampa? Will he make a difference?
Mark P
8:28
Erik Neander addressed this the other day, saying that the Rays want to play Caminero every day when he's back up, so they want to make sure he's fully ready for that increased responsibility.  The Rays aren't apt to make a panic call-up just because they're struggling, plus there's also the question of where you'd fit Caminero around the diamond.
8:29
He'll definitely be in Tampa sooner rather than later, but June might be likelier than May
Andrew
8:30
why hasn't Patrick Corbin been DFA's yet?
Mark P
8:31
The Nats need someone to eat innings, but a move could really come at just about any time now that Corbin is in the last year of his deal

8:31
Last week Ken Rosenthal suggested Toronto could be sellers before the deadline if the losses continue. Do you see it happening and if it does, who goes and who stays?
Mark P
8:33
Turner, Garcia, Kiermaier, Kikuchi, maybe Jansen are all logical candidates since they're free agents after the season.

There's a difference between being a deadline seller and blowing it up, since if the Jays do end up struggling for all of 2024, that doesn't mean they'll necessarily throw in the towel on 2025 or beyond.  It would be understandable if the front office didn't want to give up on a team with this much good pitching.

Any reason to be worried about the Braves recent slump?
Mark P
8:35
Before this mini-slump, Atlanta had been on a stretch where they'd won 10 of 11 games.  So the Braves will be fine, even if naturally they'd like to get some of their bigger bats (Olson, Acuna, Riley) snapped out of their early-season funks
