How much longer should the Pirates hold onto Rowdy Tellez? His performance offensively has been disappointing and went 0-4 with 4 strikeouts. Should the Pirates cut their losses now?
Mark P

I can understand the Bucs' logic in the signing, but frankly it also came off like a half-measure when spending a little more money could've landed a player who was more of a sure thing.

Is Luis Garcia (Nats) hot start for real? Or is it just a mirage.
Mark P
8:01
.352 BABIP certainly has some mirage-esque elements to it, but Garcia is also making a lot of hard contact and his walk rate (while still not great) is improved
8:02
He's not a sure thing yet, but it's been a nice turn-around

Marmol admitted after today's game that he got himself ejected to fire up the team. Was there a possibility that this could've been his last game managing if they hadn't won?
Mark P
8:05
John Mozeliak gave some pretty guarded praise about Marmol in an interview today, which perhaps could be interpreted that the Cards are getting antsy about making a shake-up.

I was personally surprised to see Marmol get that contract extension based on Molina's unspecified status as a (maybe?) manager-in-waiting and based on the Cardinals' lack of success in 2023.  That longer contract won't save Marmol from being fired if the Cards don't get on track, and it's looking increasingly less likely that this team can get things going

Would you fire Schneider if you were the Jay's brass? Clearly something has to change.
Mark P
8:07
Hey, another question about a managerial change!

Like with Marmol, I'm not sure Schneider is the reason his team is struggling, since the Cardinals and Jays have bigger issues (and somewhat similar issues) with roster construction and under-performing hitters.

Today injury not withstanding where do you see Lee in ROY conversation. I think he is vastly underrated and his catch in Boston should have made Top 10 on ESPN
Mark P
8:10
Unfortunately his chances at the ROY (or even his season) might be in big trouble depending on how bad he's hurt.  Even healthy, Lee has been more okay than standout, and there are a lot of guys I'd have ahead of him if I had a ROY ballot

Why do some players get placed on the 10 day IL v the 15 day IL?
Mark P
8:11
The 10-day IL is for position players, the 15-day IL is for pitchers.

The seven-day IL for concussion symptoms is open to all kinds of players

Is there a cutoff that teams use to sell?  "Memorial Day in last fire sale" "25 games back" etc?  Granted all dependent on situation but is there a formula teams use like NFL draft pick value type thing?
Mark P
8:13
Obviously some teams like the Marlins have started selling early, but with the expanded playoffs, a lot of teams are waiting until closer and closer to the deadline before deciding whether or not to sell (and to what extent).
8:14
The draft now happening at the All-Star break has also been a factor in the last couple of years. Many front office officials have noted that there's so much prep necessary for evaluating prospcts that most trade talks are on the back burner until after the draft is done.

Do you think the Rockies sweeping the Rangers at home was just luck, or was that team meeting from over a week ago actually leading to something?
Mark P
8:16
Any team can get hot for a few days, or a week, or even a few weeks.  I'd have to see a lot more consistent baseball for a much longer stretch of time before I start thinking that the Rox are a good team.

I am thinking we see an Oilers Rangers final with McDavid hoisting his first Cup. What say you?
Mark P
8:17
Panthers/Avalanche was my prediction for the finals but Edmonton vs. NYR would be a lot of fun.

I am getting very concerned with Cowser.   Should I be for the long term?
Mark P

Nah, he'll be fine.  Some regression was inevitable after his incredible start.

Are the M's legit or just lucky so far?
Mark P
8:19
The run differential is only +6, and maybe in the bigger picture the Mariners have benefited from the Astros getting off to such a brutal start.  Seattle definitely needs more offensive production but overall, they look like they'll be in contention this season.

Liitle Big League is the best baseball movie of all time.
Mark P
8:22
It's not tops on my list, but it's maybe the most underrated movie.  While I haven't seen the film in, oh, at least 25 years, I remember it being surprisingly realistic about baseball despite the goofy premise

Yes

Both for numbers, and because everyone wants to hear that speech

What do the Pirates have to do to compete?
Mark P
8:24
Draft and develop well, and increase payroll so that the front office has at least a bit more flexibility to bring in real upgrades.

Is there anyone more under the radar than LaMonte Wade? Thanks Mark.
Mark P
8:26
By coincidence, I happened to go see Casablanca on the big screen at a local theatre this past week.  Hot take here.....great movie.

And yeah, Wade is a sneaky-good player.  His struggles in 2022 dimmed whatever star he had, and naturally he is limited as a platoon bat, but his production against righties is fantastic

I was excited with Detroit"s start until a week ago. The offense production has really proven to be an issue. What do they need to do to get it going?
Mark P
8:29
Apart from the clear answer of "have more than two good hitters," it seems like Keith needs more time in the minors.  That might be the move when Urshela is healthy, since Ibanez and Vierling are earning more playing time with their hitting, and Detroit needs all the offense it can get
The Tigers will absolutely be seeking out offensive help if they're in the race at the deadline.

Which team in the NL Central has been the biggest surprise so far?  Chicago doing so well, Cardinals not, or Cincy's fizzle so far?
