Gelof is lost at the plate. Miller and Erceg have looked mortal lately. Blackburn is hurt. Rooker still strikes out too much. Butler hasn't developed. Soderstrom can't play defense. Langeliers can't lay off high heat. Jacob Wilson and Max Muncy are hurt at AAA. And just about every pitching prospect they acquired from the last sell-off is "back of the rotation starter" at best. Is there any good news for the A's?

At least their move to Vegas is going completely smoothly with no wrinkles whatsoever

Do you see the Orioles having any realistic chance of resigning Burnes?
Mark P
9:57
It depends if the new ownership is willing to go much bigger on payroll, since re-signing a top free agent is even different than extending a Rutschman, or a Henderson, or any up-and-coming young star.

There's no reason the O's "couldn't" do this, on paper.  Burnes is a Boras client so there's no such thing as a hometown discount, but if the Orioles make a competitive offer, Burnes might decide it's worth it sticking with a team that looks like a long-term contender.

Who picks up Jose Abreu?
Mark P
9:59
Great question.  He has looked so lost at the plate that "he just needs a change of scenery" doesn't appear to be the case here.  I could see a team taking a flier on him on a minors deal just because the Astros are footing most of the bill, but I admit, at this point it'll be a surprise if Abreu can again be a contributor at the MLB level

I personally believe the Tigers rushed Spencer Torkelson through the minor leagues. And I believe that now then they're trying to get him caught up. Do you think teams Rush minor Leaguers through the minors too fast to get them to the show?
Mark P
10:03
This is true in some cases, though in the Tigers' defense, Torkelson was seen by draft pundits as a player who could make a quick rise to the majors.  Given how he performed in the minors in 2021, that assessment didn't seem far off, but it's also fair to say that Detroit was too fast on the draw.

Don't forget that that pandemic basically scuttled Torkelson's 2020 season, both in college and the start of his pro career.  That lost year will have an impact on a whole generation of prospects, and the effects won't be fully seen for years to come
AJ Preller
10:04
Do I keep my job if the Padres miss the playoffs? What happens to Shildt if management dismisses me?
Mark P
10:06
Preller is under contract through 2026, and the new ownership situation might still be unsettled enough that Preller will get more time to get payroll in check and to continue his plan for the roster.

But in the big picture, you have to believe that another disappointing season for the Padres could possibly mean the end of Preller (and maybe Shildt by extension).  It's just as easy to see a different owner wanting their own hire in the front office

should the jays keep playing George Springer every day? I know he has a big contract, but he hurts the team most games
Mark P
10:09
John Schneider basically said as much the other day, that Springer and Turner would keep getting at-bats because they have the proven track records, and the Jays need to get those guys going.  Probably left unsaid was the fact that the Jays "need" to get those veterans going because their whole plan for the season relied on Springer, Turner (and Bichette, and Kirk, etc.) hitting to their career norms, and the team doesn't really have the depth to pivot to a Plan B

Do you see crochet and Robert being in the same package if so which team realistically could land both?
Mark P
10:10
It makes more sense for the White Sox to move them in separate deals, and thus fully maximize the prospect return
10:11
A team like Baltimore could afford both in the same deal, technically, but the O's aren't going to make such a blockbuster splurge and clean out their hard-built farm system

10:13
After the Abreu release I scanned every team's payroll and the vast majority have an albatross.  Can you imagine the league (and PA obv) instituting a one time amnesty like the NBA did years ago?
Mark P
10:14
Even though the players would still get their money in this scenario, I don't think the MLBPA would be on board since it would mean players are losing jobs, and it might dilute the market for big contracts in the first place.  Interesting idea, however.

Phillies need an outfielder or another bullpen arm?
Mark P
10:15
I'd lean bullpen, since Marsh's return could help matters.  Rojas struggling so badly offensively and not being too impressive on defense has been a weak link for Philly, however....even if he just wasn't hitting but was still a great fielder, it wouldn't be a huge issue.

What happened to Nolan A is age really here already
Mark P
10:18
Arenado is an interesting case, since he actually hasn't been a hard-contact guy for several seasons now.  So technically the metrics have been trending downward and he's been defying them for a while, but this season, it seems to be catching up badly at age 33
Much to the Cardinals' chagrin, obviously

10:19
Would the Dodgers trade for Javy Baez now that Mookie is out? Baez has been brutal at the plate for the Tigers
Mark P
10:19
Baez is on the IL himself right now, though that might not be in the top five reasons why the Dodgers wouldn't have any interest in trading for him
Whats for dinner?

Based on an X comment from Dan Hayes from the Athletic, I had actually just fired up "Let's Go Crazy"

Is this our year? Who is a likely big bat for us to get? (Don’t say no one.) OK, forget likely. Possible?
Mark P
10:23
Jerry Dipoto had traditionally loved making trades with the Rays, so if Tampa did look to start selling in large measure....

Granted, enough of the Rays' hitters are struggling that this wouldn't exactly be a surefire way get the Mariners' lineup on track

Given the Os infield glut could someone like Mateo go to the Dodgers to fill in for Betts? He's been great but he doesn't have a longterm spot, could net a useful pitcher.
Mark P
10:25
Mateo and Urias are both still useful enough for the Orioles that they might be less eager to move them.  Plus, the Dodgers are losing so many pitchers to the IL that they probably aren't overly keen on moving an arm right now.

If Holliday was in the majors, healthy, and playing as expected, Mateo/Urias would look like more clear-cut trade chips, but it might be unlikely at the moment

Fries Baked Potato or mashed as a side? Think Braves take a flyer on Rosario if Nats drop out?
Mark P
10:26
Just as a change of scenery candidate, sure

And fries are #1 for me, mashed are a solid silver medal, and I'm not a big fan of baked potatoes

If the Mets are for real digging themselves out of their hole, what part of the team would be the biggest thing to address at the deadline?
Mark P
10:27
Definitely the starting pitching

Funniest possible scenario would be Verlander dealt back to the Mets, but I'm not holding my breath on that one, haha.  But if the Mets do get into contention, you'd think Steve Cohen would be open to being aggressive, to make up for last year's disappointment

That's two hours of chatting in the books, so let's wrap things up.  Thanks to everyone for all the questions, and to all the dads out there, Happy Father's Day!  It would've been a perfect day for my dad if the Blue Jays had dropped a sacrifice bunt at some point, but he'll take their win nonetheless.
