Please say something nice about the White Sox.
Mark P
8:37
They have a nice ballpark
Their team Twitter feed has a nice sense of humor
Brian
8:38
Still a fan of Coby Mayo and Holliday?  Both have struggled a lot.
Mark P
8:38
Sure.  No way should anyone be writing either player off after so few plate appearances
Ken
8:38
Who do the Yankees target to play first base next season?
Mark P
8:40
Might hinge on how landing Soto goes.  If Soto leaves, the Yankees could aim high for Alonso or (more likely) Christian Walker.

If Soto stays, the Yankees will have less to spend at first base, so something like a one-year deal with a Paul Goldschmidt might be feasible
Jason
8:41
When will the free agent prediction list be released?
Mark P
8:41
Around the actual start of the offseason, in early November
Paul
8:42
What are the chances of seeing othani, kershaw and Gonsolin pitch in the playoffs
Mark P
8:42
Gonsolin, incredibly enough, seems to have the best chance of the trio.  Ohtani is a hard no and Kershaw's outlook doesn't seem great.
Twins
8:44
It is unconscionable that this team, in such a weak division and with the richest owners in the sport, might miss the postseason this year. Someone must be fired- who will it be?
Mark P
8:45
While I'm not saying that the Twins won't make some changes, I'd argue that the biggest reason for Minnesota's 2024 season is ownership mandating the payroll cut last winter.  You had a club coming off all kinds of good momentum in 2023, but having to immediately cut spending and not really fill many holes really seemed to put a ceiling on the Twins' potential from the jump

I only have great respect for what Jackson Merrill has accomplished this year, but I still think Paul Skenes—22 starts with a 1.99 ERA—should be the NL ROY. Who would you vote for?
Mark P
8:47
With all respect to Skenes, Merrill is my pick, and it isn't all that close.  Merrill from day one has been the starting center fielder (a new position for him, mind you) and an All-Star for a team that is heading to the playoffs.

Can you see the Guardians attempting to extend Josh Naylor? Does the presence of Kyle Manzardo dampen that effort? Can a deal with a team in need of an economical 1B "fill in" (yankees?) become at least interesting?
Mark P
8:48
I don't see an extension happening, so given how the Guards usually operate with players nearing free agency, Naylor might well be in another uniform on Opening Day.

Yankees are a good call here, as with any team that missed out on Alonso or Walker.
Ken
8:49
Why Merrill over Chourio?
Mark P
8:49
Merrill's simply been better.  It took Chourio a couple of months to really kick into gear.
Tom from Philly
8:50
The first half of the season Ranger Suarez looked like an elite starting pitcher. Second half he's either been injured or underwhelming. Do you think the Phillies try to extend him this offseason?
Mark P
8:52
Probably, knowing how the Phillies operate. But, between the money they've already invested in their rotation and Suarez's second-half results, the team might hold off and see how he performs in 2025.  As we saw with Nola, the Phils aren't afraid to let one of their guys reach the market before re-signing him.
Ken
8:52
Does Verlander stay in Houston? Go back to Detroit as an elder statesman trying to help his old team win? Hired gun for the Yankees, Phillies, Orioles, or Dodgers?
Mark P
8:52
Houston is the simplest answer, but returning to help the Tigers turn the corner and win a title would be very fun
Phillies
8:53
What do you do with Taijan Walker? He has negative value. Does team release or let it ride until spring training, see if Painter or another can take 5th starter role?
Mark P
8:54
Since they're paying him anyway, Philly probably keeps Walker as depth, as rotation injuries could crop up at any time.

There probably isn't much chance of a trade unless it's the proverbial "bad contract swap," but those are harder to swing in real life than they are in hypothetical internet chats

With Cardinals missing the playoffs two years in a row does Marmol survive?
Mark P
8:57
The Cardinals' extension with Marmol is still one of the more surprising front office moves of the year, in my view.  But, even with another non-playoff season, that deal likely buys him another year.

My guess is that since Mozeliak is known to be stepping back after his own contract is up after 2025, Cards ownership might view next season as something of a last dance for Mozeliak's crew.  If the team still hasn't turned things around, you'll see a bigger overhaul in both the front office and in the dugout next fall
Tigers
8:57
Skubal pitching Tuesday.     If Tigers clinch wild card befor me Sunday, his next start. He’s be lined up to pitch games 1 and 5 with extra rest. That said, Tigers will not only get in but advance past the wild card round. Agree or disagree?
Mark P
8:58
Heady times for Detroit fans that we can feasibly now have posts like this, where the concept of Skubal being rested for Game 1 is quite conceivable??
Falling Birds
8:59
Several factors (injuries, bad second halves, questionable front office moves) could be attributed to the Orioles playing well under .500 for the past few months. How concerning do you think it is long term how underwhelming they’ve been? Do they need more reinforcements next year than anticipated?
Mark P
9:01
The future is still awfully bright in Baltimore, and even if this is looking like an ugly finish, it's still more likely than not that the O's make the playoffs.  That's not nothing.

It could be that the Orioles are a more advanced version of the "earlier than expected" issue I mentioned earlier about Cincinnati.  Or, as you noted, it might just be that lots of factors all suddenly turned against the O's all at once, and better luck is due for 2025.
World Series
9:03
Who is your pick to win it all?
World series
9:03
Who you got at the end?
Mark P
9:03
Speaking of the Orioles, my preseason pick of a Baltimore/LA World Series isn't looking all that hot at the moment.  But, I'll stick with my prediction until proven otherwise!

9:04
Any signs of the SD payroll reducing further next yr?
Preller
9:04
Do you see my ownership allowing me to exceed CBT threshold next season after we just go below it?
Mark P
9:06
The Padres likely getting some extra revenue from playoff games is no small thing, and attendance and TV ratings are still booming due to the team's good play.  While nobody yet knows how the owners will proceed in the post-Seidler world, I don't think another drastic cut is all that feasible, but a payroll increase probably doesn't quite approach the tax line
Janice
9:06
How amazing is Ohtani?
Mark P
9:07
As amazing a player as I've ever seen.  Talk about living up to the hype and then some.
Ken
9:08
What do the A's do with Brent Rooker? Trade in the offseason? Trade at the deadline? Sign him on a 3-4 year contract?
Mark P
9:09
The A's have signed exactly one player (Khris Davis) to an extension in the last decade.  That's an extension of any kind, even a two-year deal to cover arbitration years or something.

Since this isn't going to change now that the club is moving to a minor league park for three years, we can rule out a multi-year pact.  Likeliest scenario is that the A's just hang onto Rooker since he's only arb-eligible for the first time this winter.
