Jeffrey Todd

Hey there! I'll let the queue build with loads of wonderful questions and then get rolling here shortly.
2:07
Okay let's do this.
Eric
2:07
Surprised by the money that Wieters got or no?
Jeffrey Todd
2:07
In the abstract, no, not at all. He's not being compensated to be a top-quality, everyday player. He's being paid as a solid role player who might see semi-regular time.
2:08
You could argue it was a bit more than might've been expected at this stage, but I do think there were a few other teams propping up his market.
2/21-ish is the type of money that, say, Bronson Arroyo has commanded in the recent past.

What's the hold up with Angel Pagan? Can't imagine nobody is willing to offer him a major league deal. Is he just holding out for an injury to make a team more interested in adding an OF?
Jeffrey Todd
2:09
Still have to think he gets MLB offers. Maybe the hold-up isn't so much money as opportunity? Hard to guess. I didn't expect him to earn a ton, but he had a quality season and would surely make a lot of teams better as a 4th OF.

With Matt Weiters signing, will the Nats send Severino to Chicago for Robertson? Washington needs a closer and Chicago needs a young productive catcher . . . .
Jeffrey Todd
2:10
Not sure they are really connected. If Wieters thrives, he opts out next winter. So they'd still have a need for Severino. It doesn't even really reduce the near-term need for a reserve option at Triple-A, since they can't likely hold onto both Norris and Lobaton.
Bruce
2:10
Any chance nats get Robertson and keep Severino?
Jeffrey Todd
2:10
Sure, there are other pieces and configurations that could make sense.

Haven't heard much about dioner Navarro, where do you think he'll land?
Jeffrey Todd
2:11
No idea, but he'll have a hard time really competing for a MLB job at this point, you'd have to think. MiLB deal, for sure.
Ranger Fan
2:11
What would you consider a fair offer to extend Darvish as of right now?
Jeffrey Todd
2:12
I've given lengthy answers on this before, but I see Stras as a rough comp in terms of quality/health. Darvish much older, so ... 6/136? Not sure he'd bite for that, but would Texas go further with another year of risk still to go?
John Daniels
2:12
Over/Under 100 PA's for Gallo in 2017?
Jeffrey Todd
2:12
I'll take the over.

What's the latest with Cutch?
Jeffrey Todd
2:12
Plays for the Pirates.
Jack
2:12
What kind of return should be expected at this point for Jake Odorizzi?
Jeffrey Todd
2:13
None because I think he stays. Don't really have a clear roster need that would drive a deal, and they have pared back the pitching depth.
At the deadline? Next winter? Answer will depend how he performs, but he's still a pretty valuable guy.
Darth Vader
2:13
If the Rangers extend Odor, how much farther or closer does that put them to extending Darvish?
Jeffrey Todd
2:13
No real impact. His salary would be structured to reflect his status (arb 1 next year).
Jacob
2:14
If cargo isn't given an extension or isn't traded this season (if their season really goes the wrong way), do you think rockies will give him a qualifying offer?
Jeffrey Todd
2:14
Seems reasonable to think they would -- they gave one to Cuddyer, after all -- but he has to earn it still. He hasn't been all that great recently.
Quintin
2:14
Do you think Sam Travis can overtake Mitch Moreland @ 1st base with a solid spring?
Jeffrey Todd
2:15
Not really. They already promised Moreland $5.5MM and Travis missed so much time last year. Better to start the latter off at Triple-A and keep the depth at this point, even if he matches his '16 spring.
Aaron
2:16
At this point is there any team willing to give Colby Lewis a major league contract and put him in their rotation? Or do you think he's going to have to wait for someone to get hurt?
Jeffrey Todd
2:16
Seems he's waiting for an injury or performance issue to get a MLB deal, and doesn't want a minors deal.
Grayson
2:16
Justin Morneau? Pedro Alvarez? Billy Butler? Ryan Howard? What's up with these guys?
Jeffrey Todd
2:16
Still a backlog of slugger types. I'd expect minor league offers for all but Alvarez -- a Boras guy, so who knows, maybe they are still sitting on offers?
Jacob
2:17
What do you think of the new intentional walk rule?
Jeffrey Todd
2:17
Doesn't seem all that impactful. I'm generally a traditionalist, but it doesn't offend me as much as some other ideas would. Also doesn't seem like it'll shave much time off of games, but I guess it will streamline things somewhat.

2:18
Thoughts on the Odor extension comp to Kipnis? Seems fair to me.
Jeffrey Todd
2:19
Really depends upon how you view his likely development. Is he better than metrics said at second? Can he start to actually take a few walks (if nothing else, b/c pitchers fear the long ball)? He's so young that there's a ton of value to be had. And would earn a lot through arb. Could be a solid deal at that general price point, even though he hasn't matched Kipnis to the same stage. (Of course, Kip was still in the minors then.)
Jose Berrios
2:20
Am I looking at a good chance to be a solid starter this year or am I stuck in the minors?
Jeffrey Todd
2:20
If he shakes off the frankly surprising problems he had last year, he'll get a shot at some point. Was so polished and steady before falling apart in the majors.
Evans

Giants have pretty strong depth of reserve infielders who do you think breaks camp with the big league roster? And does ability (or inability) to play the outfield as well come in to play?
