Chaim Bloom
8:02
Can we see the cardinals become Young talent factory like Tampa Bay?
Mark P
8:04
The Rays have a uniquely special situation that is very difficult to replicate, though Bloom naturally knows a few of their old tricks.  The Cards' larger issues of turning their young talent into consistently productive MLB players seems to be the larger issue, since St. Louis seems in my mind to have a lot of well-regarded prospects or players that have a good season or two to begin their careers and then fizzle out.

How difficult would it be to unload Jorge Soler or Marcell Ozuna? Makes zero sense to carry 2 DH's with Acuna needing DH at bats and no ability to fill out a platoon or bench.
Mark P
8:07
It wouldn't be that difficult in general, since teams want guys who can hit.  Matching up specifically with a club that has an open DH spot is trickier, and then salary-matching is another obstacle if Soler is the one dealt.

Now that Zaidi has been fired, how many GM's/POBO's are on the hot seat? Is it just Jed Hoyer at this point?
Mark P

Ross Atkins comes to mind

Do you believe that the Red Sox would entertain offers on Devers?
Mark P
8:11
Nope

8:12
Would a package of Sal Stewart Ty Floyd and Blake Dunn be enough to get Luis Robert Jr. from the White Sox?
Mark P
8:13
The White Sox would want a lot more than that, Robert's down year notwithstanding
Kurt the Hurt
8:13
Will The White Sox go after their 121 loss record next season ?
Mark P
8:14
This sounds odd to say, but it's hard to lose 121 games?  It kind of takes a perfect storm of bad vibes and lack for talent for a Major League team to be "that" bad.
Not that I think they'll lose only 101 games, but it's wild to think that the White Sox could improve by 20 wins and still be a really bad team.

"Kim will probably sign late in the season as he is a Scott Boras client (rimshot)"  Is that supposed to be a joke?  I do not get it.
Mark P
8:16
Hmm, that should've read "offseason" instead of "season."

So a typo turns that D+plus joke into a D joke.  This is why my standup career failed.
Tigers
8:17
Granted the Tigers overachieved this year. However the young nucleus is there. The owner pledged to dive into free agency, what are the odds they add a top SP and OF ? Santander and Burmes would fit the the criteria…
Mark P
8:19
Baez, Maeda, and Keith are the only players officially under contract for next season, so there's a ton of payroll space available for the Tigers to make even two splashy signings.  Just like when they signed Baez and E-Rod!....

....hmm, just to avoid those optics, perhaps they could go for one bigger-name type of player, and then spread any other money around on multiple signings.

51.5 games back of the division lead is so many games back I don't think I really internalized how bad the White Sox were until I looked that up just now.
Mark P
8:21
Perhaps the wildest stat of the season is that the White Sox were so bad that the AL Central had a losing record this season.  Despite three teams in the playoffs and the Twins finishing a game above .500.
Ross Atkins
8:21
I get criticism for my trades of Teo and Moreno but everyone forgets I was the one who acquired both in the first place.  Having said that, is my job in jeopardy for having failed to develop talent from my farm system?
Mark P
8:23
Atkins is more directly on the hot seat since the Jays vastly underachieved at the MLB level this season.  But the thin farm system is, in my view, the biggest flaw of his tenure.  The Blue Jays have had little to no depth for a few years now, and it's difficult and expensive for them to keep patching holes with free agents because they can't produce any decent players through the pipeline.
Twins fan
8:23
Who do you see purchasing the Twins?
Mark P
8:24
I sent a message to my pals in my WhatsApp group asking if we wanted to pool our money for a bid, but we couldn't quite reach $1.8 billion.
Cubs Shocker Move
8:25
I guess the cubs move Michael Busch to clear a spot for Pete Alonso.   Nobody see the Cubs moving him....Astros?   Yankees for an arm????
Mark P
8:27
That would be a pretty spicy move, but keep in mind that Busch actually had a better season by fWAR than Alonso did.  Not sure if the Cubs would necessarily spend big on Alonso when a comparable player (at a much lower salary) is already there

Will Dodgers re-sign Teo and Flaherty if they win WS?
Mark P
8:30
Next year's rotation projects as Ohtani, Yamamoto, Glasnow, Gonsolin, perhaps May, and perhaps Kershaw.  Adding Flaherty to that mix helps a lot, and this season reinforces the fact that the Dodgers need as much pitching as humanly possible.

That being said, signing a couple of veteran innings-eater types would cost less than just Flaherty, and could help the broader goal of keeping everyone fresh for October.
8:31
As for Hernandez, I'm sure the Dodgers will explore a reunion.  Talk about a signing that worked like a charm.  It'd add another big contract to the payroll, but....it's the Dodgers.
Acee suggestion
8:32
mlbtr published an article earlier today with a notion posed by beat writer Kevin Acee that DeVries or Salas might be brought up to ML team in 2025. What's your take?
Mark P
8:33
We can't rule it out since it's the Padres, but either would be a very aggressive promotion.  Obviously if either player really tears up the minors then it becomes more feasible, but for now, I'd expect both to debut in 2026

So what's on the Sunday Night Playlist?
Mark P
8:34
My soundtrack at the moment is the Mets/Dodgers game, but I had some Sloan on earlier
Kermit the Frog
8:36
Do Orel Hershiser or Mark Grace have a chance for the HOF through the Veterans Committee someday?  Hershiser had a great career, came up big in the playoffs, and Grace has like 2500 hits with more than anyone in the 90s.
Mark P
8:36
First of all, this post should've absolutely started with "hi ho, Kermit The Frog here!"

Secondly, both players in my Hall of Very Good, rather than Cooperstown-worthy.  I feel like both have been passed over by at least one veterans committee in the past.

Why do fake Red Sox fan want to trade jaren Duran?
Mark P
8:38
Feels like some Boston fans never got that image of Duran a missing fly ball out of their heads, and that's the real image of the player....as opposed to the guy who's a top-10 MVP type in 2024.
