Hall Of Fame
8:36
How many future Hall of Famers just won a ring for the Dodgers?
Mark P
8:37
Betts, Freeman, Kershaw, Ohtani, Dave Roberts in the manager's wing, Andrew Friedman in the executive wing....that's six right there

I have seen some rumors regarding the jays trading Chris Bassit and signing some FA to fill the void. If that is the case what would you predict the market for Chris Bassit to be and roughly what kind of return if they were looking for trades for the now?
Mark P
8:39
The Blue Jays' rotation depth is thin enough that moving Bassitt doesn't make a ton of sense, even if more starters are brought in (which is easier said than done).  If the Jays get off to a bad start and throw in the towel, Bassitt is an obvious in-season candidate as part of what I would guess might be an expansive teardown
MLB Fan
8:40
I'm a Cardinal fan. My feeling (and what I've read) is that the Cardinals are evaluating this year & hoping to contend again in '26. I feel like this is common for 1-2 teams every year, but it seems like those teams have the attitude  of not signing anyone during the transition year. But, if a team is hoping for a quick turnaround, like the Cardinals, why would they have the attitude of signing no one if it really is a one year turnaround? Why would a perceived one year lull prevent a team from signing a needed player to a 3-5+ year deal?
Mark P
8:41
If you're a quality free agent who is fielding offers from multiple teams, you're far more likely to join a team that wants to win (and is positioning themselves to win) in 2025.

It's a much tougher sell job to bring such a player to your team if you're saying "okay, hear me out, we're going to punt on a year of your prime, but after that...."

Do the rangers have a path to Helsley and if so what do they have to give up Rocker or Leiter maybe
Mark P
8:42
The Rangers aren't moving either of them for one year of a closer, even a very good one like Helsley.

Mark P: Ryan Helsley is very likely to be traded. Nah. Devin Williams. Get on your game, Mark. (Just kidding. Though I do think Williams will be traded.)
john
8:42
What about Devin Williams?
Mark P
8:43
I'd be a little surprised but not shocked if Williams was still with the Brew Crew on Opening Day.  If Helsley is still with the Cardinals next season, I'd be shocked

After the India-for-Singer trade reports mentioned there were other teams in the mix on Singer, some folks online started kicking around the Cubs and Nico Hoerner as a trade partner for the Royals and Singer. As a Royals fan I think I’d want Hoerner > India, but how much value does Singer really have?
Mark P
8:45
Hoerner's forearm surgery is the big obstacle to that plan.  If everyone is healthy and all things being equal, I'd prefer Hoerner over India, but not having a clear timeline yet on Nico is enough to give me pause

Any chance the Bosox leave Yoshida unprotected in the rule 5? Who in their right mind would want to absorb his salary?
Mark P
8:46
Nobody would, which is why the Sox wouldn't bother doing something that would just tick off a player on their roster
Soto Stadium Performance
8:47
Juan Soto is a .333 12HR 26 RBIs in 117 at bats at Citi Field.. Does a hitter’s performance at a certain ballpark ever factor into their decision in free agency ?
Mark P
8:49
No doubt.  Teams in pitcher-friendly parks have a tougher time luring hitters, and vice versa.

That said, I doubt it'll be much of a factor for Soto since he hits everywhere.  This question got me looking up his career splits, and he has at least an .800 OPS in every ballpark except Chase Field, Wrigley, and the Trop.  No surprise that Soto can hit pretty much anywhere.

What are your thoughts on Thad Levine leaving the Twins?
Mark P
8:53
It'll be interesting to see where he lands, whether it's with another team or perhaps in another endeavor outside baseball.  By all accounts it seems like it was Levine deciding to move on rather than any hard feelings, or misgivings about the Twins' direction.

It also led to Levine comparing himself to Mary Poppins, which is my pick as the funniest baseball quote of 2024

Ohtani pitches?
Mark P
8:54
He sure does.  Haven't you heard?
Tom Seaver
8:55
Even if they sign Soto for a zillion dollars, the Mets will still need pitching. Who among the top tier and who among the second tier do you think they'll go after? Assuming money is no object.
Mark P
8:55
This is maybe simplistic given their shared time in Milwaukee, but Corbin Burnes seems like a pretty logical fit for David Stearns' club.

It's against the rules for teams to promise an extension to someone like Sasaki. But could a team arrange an endorsement deal, as a part of their proposal, thereby offering more money than his rookie status allows? Thanks Mark.
Mark P
8:57
We covered some of these last week in the chat, but this is another situation where the league would very likely veto the deal as an end-around of the signing rules

Andrew Vaughn to Arizona for Jorge Barrosa and Adrian Del Castillo, who says no?
Mark P
8:58
Probably the D'Backs.  I don't think Vaughn has much trade appeal.

What should Cleveland do in the offseason and what will Cleveland actually do?
Mark P
9:00
Will do: trade Naylor, acquire a starting pitcher to help firm up the rotation, add an outfielder in some capacity.  (Trading Naylor could accomplish either of these latter two goals.)

Should do: all of these things, but in a higher-profile way that creates interesting stuff to write about for people who work for baseball news websites!

Montgomery to the Braves makes so much sense. How about Waldrep-Sanchez-Jiminez for Montgomery and Perdomo. DBacks kick in $13m?
Mark P
9:03
That trade doesn't make a lot of sense for either side, though Arizona would surely be keen to landing a controllable young starter like Waldrep for one year of Montgomery

Do you think the D'Backs will get overwhelmed in an offer to trade Gallen this off season? If yes, what team would you see him going to?
Mark P
9:04
Since Gallen is coming off a good but not great year, I'm not sure what would motivate another club to make an "overwhelming" kind of offer.
It's not out of the question that Gallen would get dealt since he's a free agent next winter, but it seems far more likely that the D'Backs keep most of their core together for one more big push in 2025, and they'll deal with bigger-picture questions next offeason
Jim
9:05
Bigger stadium debacle for Manfred and MLB: Rays or A's? And who is more likely to get it resolved?
Mark P
9:06
The "resolution" for the A's is at least in sight, assuming the Vegas ballpark is ready by 2028.  The Rays' situation is much more complicated, especially if the rumors are true that the city/county might be reconsidering the new ballpark project
Non Tenders
9:07
Biggest couple of names to get non tendered or let go on Tuesday may be………….
Mark P
9:07
There's a non-zero chance Jordan Romano is non-tendered, which 12 months ago would've seemed like a wild thing to write.
