Not at all.  Moving him to third base for maybe 30 games or so is a good idea if he can handle it, and it opens up more lineup and roster possibilities for the Blue Jays to add a bat for 1B/DH

Would Max Kepler make sense on the Angels? Lefty with good range to play RF and cover CF when needed. Perhaps trade Moniak for International bonus pool $?
Mark P
7:45
I'm not that high on Kepler personally, as I think he's a pretty limited player from an offensive standpoint.  If I'm running the Angels and want outfield help, I'd target bigger names before turning to Kepler.

Also, if there was ever an offseason where teams will be loath to move international pool money, it's Roki Sasaki's year

Is it possible to totally and successfully revamp your bullpen in 1 off-season, as the Jay's are attempting to do?
Mark P
7:49
We've been big bullpen turn-arounds even during a season, let alone over a full season.  So it's not out of the question that Toronto can turn things around, as difficult as it seems

Is Jan 15th the first date that teams are "allowed" to Roki or just the first he can sign?
Mark P
7:52
January 15th is the opening of the next international signing period.  The current int'l signing period closes on Dec. 15, and since Sasaki hasn't even been officially posted yet, obviously he isn't going to be signing with anyone in the 2024 int'l window.

Once Sasaki is posted, teams have 45 days to work out a deal with him.  That posting could happen at basically any time, but given the calendar, Sasaki won't officially put pen to paper until after 1/15

Where do you think Cody Bellinger will end up at.
Mark P
7:54
Assuming the Cubs do trade him, the Yankees are my pick.  They've been interested in him for a few years now, and if Soto doesn't re-sign, that creates a clear opening in the Bronx outfield
Nate Eovaldi

I throw right handed, FYI.

Late contender for "Mark's biggest brain lock of 2024" comes on December 1, lol
Juuuuust a bit out side

I’d like to see joc back in Arizona.
Mark P
7:56
He had such huge success last year that I'd have to imagine both sides would be open to a reunion, but the price would have to be right. Joc understandably must feel like he's earned a raise, but the Diamondbacks might only be willing to pay so much to a part-time DH

Some trivia: who was the first player to get a triple for their 3000th hit?
Mark P
7:58
The aforementioned Paul Molitor!

So I can remember that random bit of trivia, yet also forget that Eovaldi is right-handed.  Sigh...

Could MLB possibly do something similar to what the NHL did with the Coyotes, and move the Rays to another city, while giving Tampa a certain time period to resolve their stadium issues and then possibly get a new franchise?
Mark P
8:00
It's more logistically difficult to move a baseball team on such short notice, since fewer cities have ballparks that are MLB-compatible.  The arena in Salt Lake City, for instance, could easily be converted to hockey and already had strong "big league" types of facilities since the Jazz play there
8:01
This all being said, some kind of answer is going to have to be figured out for the Rays pretty soon.  Their 2025 is settled for Steinbrenner Field, but the clock is already ticking on figuring things out for future plans

Would the Pirates be better off spending their $30M on one or two difference makers (on the offensive side), rather than spreading them out like they have unsuccessfully done the past two years?
Mark P
8:03
The Pirates' tactic of spreading their limited payroll space around makes sense, except they didn't get much return on most of their signings last year.  If they did deployed that same strategy and just got more productive players, everything would be fine.

All this being said, I do think it's high time for the Pirates to get aggressive and just bring in a more clear-cut productive player.

Bellinger also plays 1B, which the Yankees need.
Mark P
8:04
Forgot to mention this very important detail.  A scenario exists where the Yankees could re-sign Soto and trade for Bellinger, to create more outfield depth and address first base all at once
Carroll ‘25 outlook?
8:05
How do you think Corbin Carroll will do next year? Was the first half of ‘24 the sophomore jinx and then he reemerged in the 2nd half?
Mark P
8:05
He'll likely be fine.  Such a talented player, and it's a good sign that he already made some adjustments to counter the league's initial adjustments to him.
8:06
Growing pains are perfectly normal for any young player

I know the A's will struggle to sign any free agents given their current predicament.  That said, do you believe the A's have a chance to land Kyle Hart coming back from the KBO?  Thanks!
Mark P
8:08
For those unfamiliar with Hart, he had a cup of coffee with the Red Sox in 2020 and then pitched in the minors with Boston/Seattle/Philly from 2021-23 before heading to the KBO League in 2024.  Hart then delivered a strong season as a starter with the NC Dinos, creating some speculation that he might be on his way back to the big leagues.

Depending on how much interest Hart generates, the A's certainly might seem to have a chance, as Hart might simply be eager for any MLB opportunity.

Does Verlander stick around/have enough in the tank to get to 300 wins? He's at 262 now.
Mark P
8:11
Doesn't seem likely.  Even if he rebounds and stays healthy, he'll miss out on wins just due to modern starter usage.

Could the Giants conceivable sign both Burns and Adames and can Taylor Rogers have any influence?
Mark P
8:13
It couldn't hurt?  Rogers only pitched with Milwaukee for a couple of months, so I'm not sure he exactly formed any lifelong bonds with Burnes or Adames.

Is Cal Quantrill someone a team like Milwaukee could target on a budget friendly 1+1 yr contract?
Mark P
8:15
This seems like a Brewers-esque type of signing, and Quantrill would then suddenly deliver a 3.10 ERA type of season as another Milwaukee pitching success story.

The Crew might already have enough arms that they'd prefer to give innings to ahead of Quantrill, but CQ's ability to at least eat innings could be of interest to the Brewers or several teams

If the A's took on all of Jordan Montgomery's salary, what kind of prospect could they get in return from the Diamondbacks?
Mark P
8:17
I feel like the D'Backs wouldn't view Montgomery as total salary dump if they looked to trade him.  The likelier scenario is that they'd basically look for the hitter version of Montgomery --- a player with a good track record who had a rough 2024, and whose contract isn't a great fit on its current team.

Is there any reason to fear that the O's signing an expensive pitcher would prohibit them from extending any of the young core or be a sign it's not possible to extend any of them?
Mark P
8:23
Rubenstein has plenty of money and he has already signalled that he is eager to win now.  Obviously we need to see it happen, but all indications are that the Orioles have plenty to both spend on new talent and lock up core players

8:23
Are the Mets playing PR with their stance on Alonso. Rather than say they don’t want to pay what he is asking , they wait for another team offer him more than they want to spend and then let him go.
Mark P
8:24
As mentioned for a lot of players, Alonso is in a holding pattern until Soto signs.  Particularly so in this case since the Mets are one of Soto's chief suitors.  If Soto went elsewhere, Alonso then moves up the Mets' priority list, maybe atop their list of hitters entirely.
QO question
8:25
For a team like the O’s, Brewers and D’Backs who are potentially getting pick(s) after the 1st round, if they sign a QO free agent before their guy signs, what pick do they lose?  Their third pick as of signing day or when the dust settles?
