With the White Sox acquiring Teel, they now have 2 of the better catcher prospects. Teel im assuming is their catcher. Do they trade Quero or move him to another position? 1b seems like their only choice.
Mark P
9:10
It gives the Sox flexibility in seeing how both prospects develop, since Quero isn't seen by scouts as a great defender.  If he's destined for a position switch anyway, it makes sense for the White Sox to make a move for Teel as a true "catcher of the future."

Is there a Playlist tonight or are you watching football?  The Lions game is over so maybe no football?
Mark P
9:11
My playlist tonight is the soundtrack of the Green Bay/Seattle game.  So far so good for my Packers!

Padres trade Dylan Cease?
Mark P
9:11
Feels like this might be the move the Padres make to reduce payroll and address other needs.

I'd rather you answer my previous question about a Duran/Abreu trade but anyone asking about Devers moving off of 3rd after just entering his new extension doesn't pay attention to baseball. I've seen this all offseason. It's not happening. He's being paid to play 3rd, so they won't sign Bregman. But if the price is right, 3/90 for Polar Bear could be a nice fit for a LH leaning BOS team, no?
Mark P
9:16
Such a signing would clog up the 1B/DH positions between Alonso and Casas, but that's a smaller issue compared to what damage Alonso would potentially do at Fenway.  Or, Casas could be traded for pitching.

I'm confused. Are the Cardinals trading their star closer or not? He would look great in the Cubs bullpen, but they wouldn't trade him to their rival, now would they?
Mark P
9:19
They're not moving Helsley to the Cubs, but I agree that it doesn't make a ton of sense for the Cardinals' "focus on the future" plan to keep Helsley.  Maybe they've gotten nothing but lowball offers thus far and Mozeliak was trying to juice the market, but things could pick up now that Devin Williams has been dealt

Do you think the Cubs' plan may have been to flip Paredes all along? He was such a terrible fit for Wrigley, but if they knew the Astros were being aggressive for him at the deadline (reports were Astros finished 2nd), maybe they were predicting even back then that Tucker might become available and having Paredes would be a valuable trade asset with specifically the Astros?
Mark P
9:21
I feel like I'm Chazz Palminteri dropping the coffee cup reading this.  It would be some real 4-d chess from Hoyer if this was the actual plan, but it was probably a case of things lining up really well for the Cubs
Mets Rotation
9:22
How will David Stearns build a rotation long term, is he perpetually going to avoid signing starters to long term contracts?
Mark P
9:23
I suspect Stearns is very willing to spend big on a long-term deal for the right pitcher, but by and large, his preference (as would be the preference of most front offices) is to avoid long commitments to pitchers if possible

Willy adames mentioned at his press conference that buster was a hall of famer and that he respected him as a player. Do you think that will be something that attracts free agents to SF more so than in the past?
Mark P
9:25
It'll ultimately come down to money and fit in pretty much all cases, but having a legendary player like Posey running the front office is an interesting wrinkle to SF's recruitment efforts.

what Is your take on the Casas rumors? To me, he can be the next Yaz. Despite the K’s, he never seems overmatched at the plate, even against lefties. They should be signing him long term, rather than trading him.
Mark P
9:28
Comparing him to Yaz (one of the best 20-30 players ever) is a real stretch, but sure, Casas has plenty of potential.  I'm not sure I see the Red Sox locking up a first baseman to a big deal unless he's a truly elite hitter, just because the position is relatively easy to fill.  And, in the shorter term, Devers might eventually have to move to the position

The Astros' top prospect is an outfielder, Jacob Melton, who is ready to step in.
Mark P
9:30
Melton didn't have a great 2024 season, so he'd need to have a good showing at Triple-A to get into the conversation for a bigger role on Houston's roster.  He should make his MLB debut at some point this season, but it's not exactly a Jeremy Pena situation where the Astros had a guy ready to just step right in
Joc Pederson

Think the Dbacks are going to resign me?
Mark P
9:31
It would make a ton of sense, and the D'Backs need something to recoup the offense they'll potentially lose if Walker and Grichuk leave.

It appears that the Brewers will look to the trade market to fill the 3rd base hole. I could see any of Alec Bohm, Josh Jung, Josh Smith, Jose Miranda, Matt Vierling. or Jordan Westburg as potential targets. If you were Matt Arnold, who would you call first?
Mark P
9:34
Bohm is the most obviously available.  Westburg isn't going anywhere, Jung is a tough trade fit since the Brewers would be looking to buy low but the Rangers would want top value.  Vierling is valuable enough to Detroit's roster construction that the Tigers probably won't be too keen to move him.

Also, don't sleep on Milwaukee going with a Dunn/Durbin platoon at third base.

What's the deal with all the signing bonuses? Has there always been this many and they are just reported on more than they used to be? Do they lower aav for luxury tax purposes?
Mark P
9:35
Signing bonuses have long been a standard part of contracts.  There's no impact on the AAV, since the bonuses are naturally factored into the overall value of the contract
Jed Hoyer
9:36
Why do teams give out so many no trade clauses nowadays? It seems to come back to haunt many of them. Cubs and Cards come to mind right now
Mark P
9:37
If you're a player who has already been traded a few times in your career, you definitely appreciate the security of no-trade protection.  Offering such clauses can help a team land a player in a bidding war, if all else is equal

Don't the GM Meetings set up the trades/signings for the Winter Meetings?  This year's Meetings seemed boring.
Mark P
9:42
Boring?!  There were plenty of big moves coming out of this year's meetings

Braves a fit for Ha Song Kim? Haven’t heard much on him. Let Arcia start, and have him come in an transition one of them to super utility
Mark P
9:43
Teams might be waiting for more info on Kim's recovery before getting too deep into bidding on his services
