Oakland won in 1989, chisox in 2005: 2 Dodgers won in 88, 2020, and 2024: 3
Mark P

lol, how did I forget about the 1988 Dodgers' title?!

11:11
Compare and contrast Vladdy's upcoming free agency and Alonso's current one?
Mark P
11:12
Guerrero will be entering free agency* going into his age-27 season, whereas Alonso is entering his age-30 season.  That alone makes a gigantic difference in Vlad's upcoming next payday.

= unless he signs an extension, but I'm not holding my breath

Waldrep for Fedde. Who says no.
Mark P
11:13
Atlanta.  Why would they move a 2023 first-rounder for one year of Fedde?
Chase
11:15
There's been little actual talk about Ha-Seong Kim might the Yankees be interested?
Mark P
11:15
He makes sense on paper, but I think a lot of teams are waiting on any updates about his surgery rehab
11:16
There's such a wide variance in projected return dates for Kim that I could see him not signing for another six weeks or so, just so teams can get as much info as possible

Players will never agree to a cap, but how about we split up local TV revenue evenly and put in a salary floor?
Mark P
11:18
Owners will never agree to splitting TV revenue evenly.  And, a salary floor/cap also means that owners would have to fully open their books to establish the financial guidelines, and a lot of owners have no intention of doing that

Ohtani to hit 60 homers this year?
Mark P
11:21
I'll say no just because it's so rare for anyone to hit the 60-homer plateau, and because he'll have more on his plate since he'll be focusing on pitching again.

That's right, folks.  I, a fool, am doubting Shohei Ohtani can do something.

11:22
Reds should trade for Yaz. Thoughts?  What would it take?
Mark P
11:24
Probably not a ton, even though Yaz still is lined up for a regular role in the Giants' lineup this season. But, a righty bat to platoon with Friedl/Fraley is a better fit for the Reds' needs than another LHH outfielder
Ben K
11:26
What percentage of each grade (60,55,50, etc) of prospects would you say actually meet their potential as pros? I feel like theres so many 55 and 50 prospects that get tons of hype then dont amount to much at all as pros.
Mark P
11:30
I feel like we did a similar exercise recently, but let's take a look at the first round of the 2015 draft (and the supplemental section that also counts as the "first round," technically)

Of the 42 players taken, nine never made the majors at all.  Ten have contributed negative bWAR over the course of their careers, most of which were quite brief.  Six more had less than 1 bWAR.

So that's 25 of the 42 right there who came and went.  And the 2015 draft had a good share of notable stars like Tucker, Bregman, Austin Riley, Swanson, etc.
11:31
The bottom line is that it's really hard to make it in the majors.

Are we done? Seems a little barren with Adames and Verlander as “upgrades.” Trading Flores, Yaz, Wade, Meckler, Fitz would provide financial flexibility and hope aimed for the future.
Mark P
11:33
Adames is a very big upgrade, and if Verlander is healthy, that's also a solid addition. Fitzgerald obviously isn't going anywhere. It isn't out of the question that SF might move some of those other names, but then those holes have to be filled with other depth pieces.
Cleveland
11:34
I see you talking about Cleveland needing another bat, but with Delauter, Manzardo, a full year of Thomas, Brito, Rocchio/Bo hopefully taking steps forward, etc I feel these savings should be made on a Flaherty/Pivetta move. They lost last year because their bullpen was gassed. I think a vet SP is far more important than a bat. All their near top prospects are bats.
Mark P
11:35
In theory, Luis Ortiz and a returning Bieber will help make some of those rotation innings.  Another arm might well be needed on top of that, but the Guardians might look to obtain such a pitcher during the year, as they did with Boyd and Cobb last year
11:37
If a team's list of lineup regulars "who can hopefully take steps forward" runs six deep, that in my view is a team that needs to bring in a proven bat or two
Thomas can theoretically be that proven bat, but his offensive production with the Nats has been fairly limited

Rays will will exist where in 2028
Mark P
11:38
The Tampa/St. Pete area, since something will get worked out
Sam
11:39
Do you believe the reports that the Mets plan to let one of Baty, Acuńa, or Mauricio win the 3B job or is Bregman a real possibility?
Mark P
11:40
I think the plan would be to go with the kids, but then to pick up a veteran 3B in a trade during the season if things aren't working out with any of them
Giants
11:42
Any chance Kershaw signs elsewhere?
Mark P
11:42
Zero.  He's a Dodger
Reds
11:42
All of a sudden the Reds will have some extra income they weren’t expecting this season due to tv deal. Could they shock everybody and sign Alonso to a short term 3-year deal? 3 years, 80 million. He could hit 50 HR in GABP.
Mark P
11:43
They have "some" extra income, but reportedly not enough to afford Carlos Estevez.  So Alonso is way out of range, even on a limited contract
11:44
Time to wrap things up.  Thanks for all the questions, and we'll be back with more chatting next weekend!
