Another one made famous by me! Oh, wait.
2:47
In theory, it's just determined by the league's processes for verifying residency and such. Perhaps they also research other things (age?) before granting FA. I don't know of any particular reason to believe the process is manipulated, but certainly there are varying incentives for the player/agent and certain teams for it to be granted at a certain time.
(Earlier is always better for the player - gives them options. But some teams would benefit from it landing in an earlier or later period.)

Do the padres get anything good for their starting pitchers at the deadline? Chacin looks like he may be turning a corner
Jeffrey Todd
2:48
After 5 solid starts last year, he was dealt from the Braves to the Angels for ... Adam McCreery.
2:49
Not seeing much in his fundamentals to suggest there's a real change in his value. And like the others, there's a reason these guys could be had for such marginal commitments.
2:50
That said, sure, it's not hard to imagine one or more being seen as useful pieces at the deadline. But I wouldn't get my hopes up for a big return.

what kind of return could u see ervin santana bring?
Jeffrey Todd
2:52
If he's in really good form come July, he could fetch a solid, top-100 type prospect. But it's impossible to predict; even if we knew just what Santana would be doing and what the supply/demand situation is, the Twins' internal preferences and those of possible suitors can't really be gauged.
There are all manner of scenarios in these deals, too. Remember: Arrieta/Strop (two bounceback MLB-level targets) went for Feldman.

Alright you make a guess and I'll find out and tell you later in the chat. When Correa and Lindor reach free agency, who gets the biggest deal?
Jeffrey Todd
2:53
Bigger contract when they reach FA?

Lindor (45.9% | 68 votes)

Correa (54.1% | 80 votes)

what would a Mookie extension look like if sox were trying to keep him longterm?
Jeffrey Todd
2:55
Were I Mookie (if only! what a bowler) I'd be looking to top the Trout contract, which was a bargain when it was reached.

Should the Angels be kicking themselves for targeting Luis Valbuena over Eric Thames?
Jeffrey Todd
2:56
Sometimes reasonable decisions don't work out. But I'm not sure that was really an either/or. Valbuena signed late and gave them an option at both corners -- different type of player.

Mets trade for Cozart, move Asdrubal to 3B?
Jeffrey Todd
2:57
That would be conceivable, but would depend upon a lot of still-unknown variables.

Can you offer any advice for getting a 3 year old who loves hitting a ball in the backyard to watch baseball instead of the same cartoons over and over?
Jeffrey Todd
2:59
I have had very marginal success getting my kids to pay attention to baseball, and I suspect it's related to the fact they are little kids. Bide your time, limit any TV generally, and try bringing them to the park to catch the baseball bug. Easier to stay entertained when you're watching in person.
Hosmer
3:00
Why would anyone give me big money when I'm not all that good? How much better am I than someone who is barely worth having on their team like Justin Smoak? I don't get it.
Jeffrey Todd
3:01
Well, he's a guy who seemingly is valued quite a bit for his skills. But yeah, ultimately you have to turn that into production, and he just hasn't done it consistently. He'll have to really pick up the pace to land a big deal.
You can see how we view Hosmer's situation in Tim's FA power rankings. Certainly not currently rating him as likely to land nine figures.

Are the Rangers in trouble?
Jeffrey Todd
3:02
5 back of the Astros, who I think are a better team. I'd say so. Obv too early to count them out, but it's not a great start.

Okay couple more here and I gotta run ...

With how well Sale and Eaton are playing, do those trades seem more even now? Too much? Too little?
Jeffrey Todd

Felt both were pretty reasonable at the time.

Predict Cozart free agent deal.
Jeffrey Todd

He's an elite defender. So long as he stays healthy and even hits within range of average, he's a pretty nice player. Big question will be demand.

At what point does KC decide whether to buy or sell?
Jeffrey Todd

Mid-July-ish?
I'm betting sell, personally.
But I'm always wrong on the Royals.

What's your gut say re a Ryan Braun deal despite his 10-5 rights looming?
Jeffrey Todd
3:06
Don't see that as an obstacle given that he already can block trades to basically every team he doesn't want to be dealt to.
Ryan

Theory: Byron Buxton is still in the Majors despite his slow start in order to drive up the value of Ervin Santana and Hector Santiago with his exceptional defense. Thoughts?
