I think I’m the only person on the planet absolutely baffled that Anthony Rizzo isn’t on a team. I get this is 50% an organization and 50% a player decision but how has not a single team given him a decent offer that he considered??
Mark P
6:41
Rizzo has been basically a replacement-level player for the last two seasons, and simply hasn't looked the same since his non-diagnosed concussion.  For a 35-year-old, first base-only player coming off two rough seasons, it isn't surprising there wasn't much of a market, Rizzo's resume notwithstanding
Dipoto
6:42
Mariners struggles are the same as always.  Do you think maybe a Devers or Casas might help?
Mark P
6:44
The Mariners won't expand payroll enough to take on Devers' contract.  It's easy to say the M's could've or should've moved Miller or Woo for Casas (if such straight-forward one-for-one swaps were really on the table) but I can understand Dipoto's reluctance to break up the rotation.

Miller's splits away from Safeco would've made him the one to trade, in my opinion.
Chris Young

The Texas Rangers have made it clear they would like to stay under the luxury tax this season to avoid the penalties that come with being a taxpayer 3 years in a row. They have less than $5M to work with, roughly speaking. By the deadline, if they are truly one of the best teams in the AL and have a legitimate chance to win it all, will they consider going over the luxury tax if the right impact player(s) are available? Or will they not go over under any circumstance?
Mark P
6:47
They could get creative and try a cash-neutral kind of trade.  The Rangers also have a decent chunk of money coming off the books after the season, so they could potentially view 2026 as their reset year if they really seem to be "one player away" at this year's deadline.  Ownership knows all too well what a playoff run can mean revenue-wise, so Young can make that argument to get himself some more funds at the deadline if need be
6:49
Uh oh, turning back to the Mariners again, looks like Robles hurt his forearm or wrist making a great catch out in right field.
March madness
6:50
Who do you have tomorrow night? Any of your brackets survive?
Mark P
6:50
I actually picked Houston to win one of my three brackets, so hooray?  The rest of my picks in that very bracket were, uh, not great.
Wad
6:51
Who is your sleeper team for 2025?
Mark P
6:51
The Royals were my pick to win the AL pennant, which seems like kind of a hot take even though they made the playoffs last year
Small market
6:52
Why does it always seem that these chats focus so much on smaller markets? I think it has to hurt business focusing on the smaller groups of fans over the bigger followings.
Mark P
6:53
After running these chats for (gulp) almost five years now, I'm not sure I've noticed any great influx of questions from one particular team over another.  I'd guess the majority of questions seem to focus on various hot-ticket topics in the game, like a struggling team that looks like it'll be a deadline seller, or perhaps a contender with a clear hole to address, or a team unexpectedly hampered by an injury.
Dave
6:54
Assuming their ownership was willing to spend, what might a Devers-to-the-Nats trade look like? I would think it would have to start with Brady House and Dylan Crews. More? Less? About right?
Mark P
6:56
Washington would be an interesting fit for Devers.  In theory your idea of a trade package would fit, but the Sox are already so deep in position players that Crews or House might not move the needle as much for Boston?

Ha, now I'm wondering if whatever buyout was reached for Strasburg's contract allows it to be "traded" or not, since the Nats could throw the last year of that deal in as a partial salary offset.
6:57
The Sox would be likelier to ask for Susana or Sykora, but the Nats also probably don't want to clear out their farm system since they need pitching too
Bud
6:57
You don’t think  Misiorowski is an option for Milwaukee?
Mark P
6:58
He hasn't pitched much at the Triple-A level yet, and as desperate as the Crew are for immediately pitching help, i'm sure they don't plan to rush a top pitching prospect too soon
Eric
6:59
How far into a season do you use as a litmus on to what's real performance, and what was a hot start?
Mark P
7:01
A month sounds like a long time, but unless a guy is just absolutely disastrously ice cold, I wouldn't worry too much about slow starts until at least May 1.  There are lots of great seasons in baseball season that involved a player having a slow 6-8 weeks

Believe in a Luzardo breakout?
Mark P
7:02
The talent has always been there, it's just been a question of whether or not he can stay healthy.  The early results have been pretty great, and Luzardo seems energized by the change of scenery
Biggie
7:02
I see a plethora of ex White Sox players doing well on other teams. Why were the Sox so bad?
Mark P
7:04
Speaking of changes of scenery....

Much has been written about how there's been a lot of bad atmosphere within the White Sox clubhouse over the last few years.  No surprise that some guys feel completely reinvigorated after getting out of what appears to be a pretty miserable environment on and off the field.

i love stories like Tim Tawa.   I wish older rookies like this am the success in the world.
Mark P
7:05
I invite everyone to watch the video of Tawa being told he's going to the big leagues.  I could watch these kinds of clips all day.

And baby the Dodgers got a stew going. Do you agree?
Mark P
7:06
The Dodgers have been cooking high-quality stew for over a decade now.
Kyle Tucker
7:08
Will I be signing an extension with the Cubs? If not, what team will I play for next?
Mark P
7:09
The Cubs would have to go way above their preferred spending habits to make this deal happen.  But, if there was ever a guy to break the bank on, you'd think the Cubs would splurge on the player they already gave up a major trade package to obtain, and Tucker has already been tearing it up during his brief time in Chicago.
Metropolitan Fan
7:11
Even with the nice performance (so far) of NY Mets pitching staff the exit of David Peterson from today's game surely will rise some concern to many people within the organization. So, should the NY Mets start pressing the panic button and get done a trade deal for a starting pitcher soon? Let say with the Miami Marlins for Sandy Alcántara. Thanks in advance.
Mark P
7:13
That was a bizarre situation, and I won't understand why the Mets let him keep pitching when something was clearly amiss.

The Mets (like most teams) probably aren't likely to swing a deal too quickly, but Alcantara is probably on their radar.  As we saw with the Luzardo trade, the Marlins aren't adverse to dealing within the division, even if Alcantara might carry a bit more emotional weight for the franchise.
Angels Fan
7:14
As much as I want to get excited. Especially knowing that Neto, is getting closer to being ready. I also know that it’s the Angels. And I wonder how many games, will Trout actually be able to play in. It took less than a week, to completely tax the Bullpen. For us Angels fans, what do you think of this team?
Mark P
7:15
I don't think much of their chances this season.  If this hot start isn't a mirage and they end up being competitive, I'll happily eat my words since who doesn't love an outta-nowhere story?
Closer?
7:15
Ottavino for closer on the Pirates? Any chance of that?
Mark P
7:17
Judging by Santana's usage today, he'll be the top relief option, whether that means strictly pitching in the ninth or not.  Ottavino seems like as decent of an addition as any for a bullpen-needy team like Pittsburgh, so sure.

7:17
Who is the home run leader this year. AL and NL
Mark P
7:18
I'll pick Judge in the AL. Maybe it's a little easy to just say Ohtani again in the NL, so let's go with someone new like Tucker
7:19
btw, entering today, the NL co-leaders in home runs were Eugenio Suarez (who has somewhat quietly been scorching hot since the middle of last season) and noted Dodgers slugger.....Tommy Edman??

Could Mitchell Parker be on the verge of a Kyle Hendricks level breakout season?
