Their offense needs to be a lot more consistent, which is a hilarious criticism to have about a team that just scored 24 runs today.

Perhaps today's rout is the first sign that the bats are starting to wake up.  Austin Hays immediately getting off to a great start coming off the IL has also been a nice boost for Cincy

Will Luis Robert Jr. be gone by the deadline?
Mark P
6:40
Not if he keeps hitting like this.  Again, "it's still early," but Robert having another rough season and cratering his trade value would be a worst-case scenario for the White Sox

Who am I extending?
Mark P
6:43
Meyer, or maybe Edwards/Stowers have gotten themselves on the radar as extension candidates.  But the Marlins still seem to be deep enough into their rebuild that they probably aren't looking too hard at locking players up.

Where might Correa go if traded? Does he have a NTC? How much would the Twins have to pay?
Mark P
6:48
He has full no-trade protection, so he'd be calling the shots if it came to being moved.  Counting his full 2025 salary, Correa is owed $128MM through 2028, plus four more club option years after that can vest into guaranteed options based on how many plate appearances he receives in the preceding year.

I'm disregarding those club options for now since the Twins or any other team can conceivably control Correa's workload, plus it's fair to wonder if he'll be healthy enough to hit the vesting thresholds anyway.

Also, discussing the salary terms may be a moot point since Correa is hitting so poorly that his trade value is pretty negligible right now.  The Twins would have to be eating virtually all of that money to move him at this point, so a trade doesn't seem feasible unless Correa picks it up.

If the window is closed for extending Framber and Hunter Brown, who else should the Astros extend this year with the Abreu & Montero money coming off the books this offseason?
Mark P
6:51
Brown isn't arb-eligible until this coming offseason, so I'd certainly say there's a chance the Astros can still extend him.  Despite the fact that the majority of Scott Boras clients test free agency, Boras has negotiated several big extensions over the years, including a couple with the Astros themselves

6:52
Will the Nationals do the right thing and extend MacKenzie Gore soon?
Mark P
6:53
I can almost cut-and-paste from the previous answer, since Gore is also a Boras client.  Gore is also in his first arb year, so there's an even shorter period of time between him and free agency.
6:54
Not saying Washington doesn't have a chance to extend him, but I'd lean towards Gore testing the market

What would it take for the Jays to get Donovan out of St Louis?
Mark P
6:55
A lot.  Donovan is quietly one of the more valuable trade assets in baseball, since he's a fit on so many rosters.  This probably means the Cardinals aren't trading him at all, since as much as the team is refocusing on youth, I suspect Bloom and ownership think the team can get back to contention without a big teardown
Madea, Baez, rendon, etc..
6:57
Why are teams so reluctant to drop overpaid players who underperform and hurt the team, rather than help? Watching Maeda and Baez is painful when the Tigers farm system is stacked… I’m sure many teams have similar players…
Mark P
6:59
Detroit's rash of injuries have left the door open for those veteran players in particular this season.  But, in general, teams figure that if they're paying these guys anyway, why not keep giving them chances to see if things turn around?  To use Stanton as an example, the Yankees resisted all calls to cut him, and he ended up being a big part of the reason they won a pennant last year.

How tradeable are the Ohtani/Soto/Vlad contracts?  If the teams were forced to shed payroll, could they get out from under them and/or get anything but money relief?
Mark P
7:04
All three have full no-trade clauses, so that's the first hurdle to be cleared.  If any of the trio are still performing at a star level, it wouldn't be that hard for the Dodgers/Mets/Blue Jays to hypothetically work out a trade since teams always want elite talent.  In Ohtani's case in particular, the sponsorship deals flooding in from Japan would make that trade very worth it for any number of teams.....which probably why it would take a pretty far-fetched scenario for the Dodgers to ever move him

How can the Phillies fix their outfield? I know it’s early, but Kepler and Marsh (now on the IL) have not been great. I really think they made a mistake by not going after a solid RH outfield bat

7:06
Phillies outfield is a mess, as is their pen. How long before they make a move to get some stability?
Mark P
7:09
It's probably a lot to ask that Rojas keeps up his hot hitting, but getting even decent offense from him would be a big help to the outfield mix.  Marsh's IL stint might be a hidden boon as kind of a reset for his season.

In general, it seems like the Phillies weren't too eager or willing to keep spending this past winter.  Maybe not surprising, given all of the money they've already got on the books.  As noted earlier, spending what seemingly little money they did have on Romano and Kepler might've been a mistake, leaving Dombrowski now having to figure out a second answer or two by the deadline

How about a couple of underperformers at positions of need for each team: Garrett Mitchell for Alec Bohm
Mark P
7:10
Fun idea, but I think Mitchell's ceiling is a lot higher than Bohm's

Do the Orioles make a major shakeup or just wait?
Mark P
7:11
They'll wait.  As rough as the rotation has been, I find it hard to believe that a club with this much talent will keep struggling.
Make it so

Justify Will Riker
Mark P
7:13
To this day, my friends and I still use Commander Riker as a rating system for quality facial hair.  As in, "man, that guy's got an awesome beard, it's at least an 8/10 on the Riker scale."

7:14
It seems to be working out with Turang, but him Ortiz, Durbin.. writers always say the metrics don't like them and yet the Brewers seem to target them, what is their logic?
Mark P
7:14
It's no surprise by this point that the Brewers are very good at identifying and developing talent.  And to be fair, Turang and Ortiz were top-100 prospects, it's not like they were random pickups

Do you think Atlanta can turn things around and get back in contention?
Mark P
7:15
Like my answer on the Orioles, yes.  Too much talent in Atlanta for the club to stay down for too long.
7:17
We're approaching the two-hour mark, so time to wrap it up.  Thanks to everyone who submitted a question, and we'll be back for more next weekend.
