Bees, beads, and baseball, here in the Weekend Chat! Let's take a minute for the questions to pile up, and then get cracking....
Guards Nation
8:19
How long are the Guardians going to stomach it with Carlos Santana? Can’t hit, defense is regressing, and just seems out of it.
Mark P
8:20
While it wouldn't be a surprise if a player of Santana's age finally hit a wall, don't forget that he also had a slow start last year with the Twins before heating up.  Too soon to write off Santana just yet.
Cards
8:21
If a month ago you would have told me Liberatore would be one of our better pitchers I probably would have laughed. What happens if he has a good year this year? Extension? Trade possibly?
Mark P
8:22
A trade would make no sense.  An extension is possible, though it'll be interesting to see how the front office approaches things once Bloom officially takes over.  It seems likelier that the Cards will want to see more than just a few good starts before fully considering Liberatore part of the future libera-core, plus there's no rush to extend him since he's already controlled through the rest of the decade.

Why do you think most every Dodger pitcher comes up with an injury ? Too many to be a coincidence
Mark P
8:25
The Dodgers seem okay with favoring ability and upside over durability, since obviously guys like Glasnow or Snell (or Ohtani, technically) had plenty of injury red flags before coming to L.A.  But given how so many of the homegrown pitchers are also getting injured, it's a very disturbing trend that surely the team is frustrated by.
8:26
Whether this leads to an overhaul of the training staff, changes in the pitcher development system, or all of the above, the Dodgers surely don't want to keep using like 20 different starters a year out of pure attrition
Rance Mulliniks fan
8:27
What do you do with the Jays?
Mark P
8:29
Barring an unexpected early trade to add a big bat, I think the roster is what it is.  Obviously it's only a month in, but a roster that didn't seem to have many hitting threats is (unsurprisingly) not hitting.  Among the names expected to carry the lineup, Guerrero and Bichette have only been okay, and Springer's hot start has been countered by Santander being ice cold.
Cards
8:29
Why do you think it’s “likely” Helsley is moved before the deadline as Bob stated earlier? Think the cards are kinda waking up and realizing the ship is probably headed under soon?
Mark P
8:31
It made little sense that Helsley wasn't dealt during the offseason, so perhaps by that logic, a trade earlier in the season wouldn't be much of a surprise.

That said, odds are STL will wait until closer to the deadline, or until June at the earliest (if they're clearly out of the race by then).
Polancgoat
8:31
If this version of Polanco had been present last year, the mariners would have made the playoffs. Do you think this roster is actually this good or just getting lucky
Mark P
8:33
Polanco and Raleigh won't stay "this" hot all year, but they've both been so great that the Mariners have been able to consistently score enough runs to win, even with most of the rest of the lineup still a little shaky.  (Arozarena is at least getting on base.)
8:34
Ironically, this has come with Kirby injured and the rotation only being okay rather than great.  If Seattle can balance everything out for a consistent amount of time, they can bank enough wins to get into the playoffs

Soooo, Tiger's looking real good. Pitching great. Is it sustainable??
Motor City Beach Bum
8:36
Do you think they Tigers are for real? Good pitching, good offense so far.
Mark P
8:37
It's somewhat the same formula as the Mariners, as Detroit also has a couple of nuclear-hot hitters carrying an otherwise middling lineup.  The Tigers feel more sustainable to me because they should be even better once the injured guys return, plus Riley Greene's going to snap out of his slump sooner or later.

Any chance ATH send my Royals some spare OF for cheap with Sod moving to the OF?
Mark P
8:38
The A's might want to see how this experiment works before making a move, but since Andujar seems like the odd man out in Sacramento, the Royals should definitely be placing a few calls
Baseball Sage
8:40
Is Ethan Salas going thru a rough few years or has he been overhyped?
Mark P
8:40
He's only 18 years old and we're already wondering if Salas is a bust??

I do wonder why the Padres have already got him in Double-A when Salas barely had any time at high-A ball, and didn't dominate.
Nats Fan
8:43
We do not appear poised to make the postseason in 2025 and ownership basically proclaimed we were not yet good enough to justify more significant spending. Rizzo has insisted we are in the midst of a “reboot” instead of a “rebuild” but we are looking at 6 straight losing seasons. The broader baseball world seems less bullish than he is on how close we are to competing. Gore, Thompson, Garcia, and Gray are all slated to become FAs after the 2027 season. These were supposed to be some of the building blocks of our next championship team. So what does our competitive timeline look like?
Mark P
8:44
I'm higher on the Nationals than you are, and I think they'll start making a fuller push towards competing this coming offseason.  This doesn't necessarily mean they'll break the bank on Kyle Tucker or something, but the Nats are on pace to start making bigger-ticket moves than their recent tactic of short-term deals

Just worried the Cards will carry out a couple of extensions by Mo that would hamstring the Cards long-term. Please let us know that the Cards will wait fully until Bloom is settled into the role without Mo around. Thank you,
Mark P
8:47
There is zero chance that the Cardinals would sign someone to a big extension right now without Bloom's input.  Given the unusual nature of this succession plan, I'd imagine that pretty much everything apart from the most routine of day-to-day transactions is being evaluated by Mozeliak and Bloom
Sammy Sosa

Can the Cubs keep this up? They’ve played the toughest schedule there could be and are still winning.
Mark P
8:49
I picked Chicago to win the NL Central, so sure, I think they can keep it up.  The rotation depth is a concern, but (again turning to how a roster can balance itself out), the lineup is performing great, including an apparent breakout from Crow-Armstrong.
8:50
It's probably safe to assume Carson Kelly won't keep hitting like Josh Gibson the rest of the season, but the rest of the lineup's ability looks sustainable
Sad O's Fan
8:51
Has the rebuild failed? Adley has been bad for about 4 months straight and his bWAR has declined every year in the league, Gunnar basically only hits 105 MPH grounders right to the second baseman, all the other hitters are MIA, and there is no pitching.
Mark P
8:52
Did moving the wall in curse this team?!  The "it's still April" caveat obviously applies here, but the Orioles have gotten off to almost a team-wide funk that hasn't been helped by a lot of pitching injuries.
Giants
8:53
Do the giants make a change at first base for the season while they wait on Eldridge? No production there currently even with them winning.
Mark P
8:54
Encarnacion has only played a bit of first base at the MLB level, but he could help out at the position (and help the Giants' lineup overall) once he is healthy.

In the broader sense, picking up a veteran rental 1B at the deadline seems like a wise move if Wade can't get on track, and if/when the Giants remain in contention

How much money has Devin Williams cost himself so far?
Mark P
9:00
If he pitches well in low-leverage spots, gets back to closing and is then back to his old self, it won't have "that" much of an impact on his next contract.  But any hopes Williams had of topping Diaz/Hader money is likely out the window now.
There's also the fact that even if Williams does pitch well, the Yankees might just keep him in a set-up role if Weaver keeps pitching great as closer.
Grover
9:02
do you see the Mets as a wildcard team
Mark P
9:03
I forget if I had them winning the NL East or being a wild card, but regardless, they'll be in the postseason.  Despite the inherent advantage of the bye, I'm not sure it matters that much if you're a division champ or a wild card, as we've seen in recent years
Ozzie
9:03
Would I be the guy the Braves trade to upgrade SP or RP staff?   If not me, who gets traded?
Mark P
9:04
Not sure Albies is an answer here, for a few reasons.  His trade value isn't too high right now, and if he's moved, the Braves go with....Allen? Arcia? Alvarez? at second base?
