It's not quite the "weekend" chat, but a special Memorial Day edition of the chat instead. Let's take your questions....
John
8:11
Does Coby Mayo still have elite trade value?
Mark P
8:13
I don't think rival teams will be too scared off by his meager MLB production, given the tiny sample size. If Baltimore wanted to move Mayo for, say, a controllable starting pitcher, they'd find plenty of interest
Gil
8:14
We hear the padres are interested in trade, is there any Left fielder that makes the most sense for them?
Mark P
8:15
I listed a few of the obvious OF trade candidates on the non-contenders, but outfield is a broad enough position that the Padres could well find some help on some contenders with an OF surplus. Preller is no stranger to creative trades, and one thing I probably should've stressed in that post was that San Diego surely isn't looking at "only" trades.  Outfielders might become available on the waiver wire, in minor league opt-outs, etc.

I know the Pirates aren’t trading Paul Skenes. But just for fun, if you’re Ben Cherington and the Dodgers called and you figured what the hell, what are you asking for?
Mark P
8:17
Pages, Rushing, and then probably any three or four more guys from LA's top 10 prospects list.
8:18
It's a little hard to actually figure out a Skenes trade scenario, simply because Pittsburgh's asking price would be (justifiably) so astronomical that it's hard to see another team agreeing

Tigers fans are in open revolt about Jace Jung and have zero faith in him. Does he become a MLB star, above average regular, regular, just a platoon guy or a career AAAA player?
Mark P
8:19
Again, we're not dealing with a large sample size in the majors, so one can't make such a call on Jung so early in his career.  The microscope is a little more focused on his lack of production now since the Tigers are in winning mode, so with this in mind, Detroit could option him down or reduce Jung's playing time if things don't improve
This may be the answer for 2025, but it's easy to see him still being a prominent part of the future

I would really like to see the Royals make some "raise the floor" type trades now, rather than wait til the trade deadline. Guys like Ramon Urias, Amed Rosario, Alex Call, etc should be cheap prospect wise, but even if they are around league average should help the Royals because of how much dead weight they have. Thoughts?
Mark P
8:21
Agreed. KC's lack of outfielders can't be overstated, and getting even an okay player is a vast improvement.  "Okay" players also cost a lot less in trade capital, yet it's also only late May, so teams have high asking prices on even modest rentals

Jesus Sanchez to the Padres as the Marlins and Padres kickoff trade season early again. Should Miami tear it down to the studs  this summer?
Mark P
8:24
What the heck have the Marlins been doing for the last year if you don't already consider them in full rebuild mode??

Sanchez isn't hitting particularly well, yet still might be an improvement over the current SD left field mix.

Do I make a trade for an established closer and possibly give up a top farm player or 2 or should I trust Palencia or Hodge when he returns from the I.L?
Mark P
8:26
If I'm the Cubs, I trade for a proven reliever with closing experience. Hoyer has traditionally been reluctant to spend on such relievers, but a signing and a trade are two very different things.

Chicago has the offense to contend, so now it's time for the front office to augment the pitching and give the team a real chance.

If you are the Cards GM, do you attempt to move Arenado, Helsley, Fedde, Matz, etc..?
Cards Fan
8:26
Seriously - Cardinals.  A mirage or what?
Mark P
8:28
Assuming St. Louis stays in the race, the team might be prone to just keep everyone for a "last ride" type of push. I hesitate to call them a lock for the playoffs or anything, but the Cards have played such solid baseball that they seem for real as a competitive team.
Dave
8:29
Do the pirates wait until 2027 to call up Bubba Chandler to be Skenes replacement?
Mark P
8:30
Chandler will be up before 2025 is over, probably after the Pirates can assure that he won't gain Super Two status.  At their current pace the Bucs will be deadline sellers, so at least Heaney will be dealt and some more space will open up in the rotation
Bobby Cox
8:31
If we fall out of it, I would move profar. Maybe to SD no playoffs but maybe he gets them help for a wc
Mark P
8:31
Atlanta would have to eat most if not all of Profar's remaining salary in any trade.  Even for a team like the Padres that has a history with Profar, his trade value is rock bottom right now coming off the PED suspension
Torin
8:32
Any meaningful June trades? A lot of parity right now. Teams should be more aggressive
Mark P
8:33
This same parity might mean less aggression.  Even if you're a team with a clear weakness or two, you might not feel compelled yet to address that weakness if you feel you can still at least tread water in the postseason race.

It appears Skubal's cost is gonna go up.  . Do we try and extend him now? He is only going to get more expensive later.
Tiger Town
8:33
Any chance the Tigers can lock Skubal up this season/offseason? If not, do they look to deal him by the Winter Meetings?
Mark P
8:36
As a Scott Boras client, Skubal is almost surely not signing an in-season extension, and I'd lean against him signing an extension at all.  As tempting as the idea of trading a year of Skubal for a big prospect package might be, keep in mind that the Tigers have now shifted into contender mode.  Keeping Skubal through 2026 in order to take two runs at a championship may carry more value for Detroit than trading him, and rolling the dice that whatever you get back can pay dividends in the future

Any chance the Yankees acquire Bo Bichette and Sandy Alcantara/ Skenes/ Valdez/ Lopez?
Mark P
8:39
Alcantara is the only realistic name on that list. Pittsburgh isn't moving Skenes in the near future. The Astros/Twins/maybe Jays will all contending at the deadline and likely don't be moving their pitchers.  In Toronto's case, even if they did move Bichette, it surely won't be to a division arch-rival.

When do the royals call of Caglianone?
Mark P
8:40
He's been in Triple-A barely a week, and still could probably use more seasoning as an outfielder.  That said, his numbers continue to be absurd, so a call by the All-Star break certainly seems plausible

Iggy Pop, David Bowie, Roxy Music, or Lou Reed?
Mark P
8:41
I'll take Bowie of that group, with the caveat that I (inexcusably?) haven't heard much of Roxy Music's music

Why did the Padres only sign aging veterans who at the most are platoon players this offseason? They could’ve gotten a reasonable good priced OF without blowing the salary cap. Tyler O’Neill for example.
Mark P
8:44
Given how O'Neill is struggling in Baltimore, I don't think he would've necessarily been an answer for the Padres.  It was an open secret that San Diego was dealing with a pretty limited payroll, and it seems like they decided to essentially punt on last offseason and take one more run at contention.  The bigger decisions on payroll may come next winter when Cease, King, Arraez are free agents
Henry Dodger
8:45
Do the Padres have to go into at least a retool mode after 2025, or can they still build a real contender in 2026 around Merrill and Tatis despite the likely starting pitching departures?
Mark P
8:47
Musgrove will be healthy by 2026, Darvish will hopefully continue to be effective, Pivetta has been terrific and is under contract through at least next year, and the Padres have gotten some good returns from the younger guys.  There's still plenty on the roster for San Diego to stay competitive, unless the ownership situation somehow leads to a payroll-slashing edict
Dipoto
8:47
Solano, Garver, Rivas, Mastrubuoni all seem like dead weight for the Mariners.  Why would they not pick up someone like Arcia?
