Hi all. We will get rolling in a few, but go ahead and start in with some questions.
Steve
2:11
What do you feel the Mets have to do to start winning again?
Jeffrey Todd
2:11
Bring Thor and Harvey back to life?
The team is still fine. Trouble is they need to do more than just play well. They need to play great.
OOF

@TimBritton
now
Red Sox announce Tyler Thornburg will undergo surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome. He will miss the rest of the season.
So that trade has not worked out very well to this point.
Juan
2:12
Is Marcell Ozuna potentially the best bat available this summer?
Jeffrey Todd
2:13
Probably not the best pure hitter ... that could be Alonso (!) ... but perhaps the top position player asset. Affordable control is a big factor.
2:14
I have been trying to finish up the next round of the deadline power rankings and am having trouble w Ozuna. Can't decide how I think the sale will impact the trade plans for that sort of player.
Mike
2:14
With CC on the shelf did the odds of Quintana becoming a Yankee go up? Given his first half is there any way New York can make it happen without moving Frazier?
Jeffrey Todd
2:15
The CC injury does matter, though perhaps it shouldn't be seen as a game-changer. Doubt they go from 0 to 60 just because of that.
2:16
Bigger factors here are the broader situation -- clearly in contention in the division -- and the need for SP in future years.
Chris
2:16
Are the Phillies really this bad, or is there some bad luck involved?
Jeffrey Todd
2:16
They probably aren't quite this bad, but at some point it doesn't matter just how bad you are.
John
2:17
What would it cost the Red Sox in prospects to get Frazier or Moose?
Jeffrey Todd
2:17
They should be typical, solid deadline rental players. Neither is super cheap. Doesn't seem likely to be really wide demand. So I don't think either will require a massive haul.
2:18
Wild cards here: do other orgs end up having 3B needs? and are Royals close enough in the division that they could decide to stand pat?
2:19
White Sox will pretty clearly be auctioning Frazier, though I guess it's at least theoretically possible he's held for an August deal (with the Sox not caring if he's claimed - great, shed the salary at least).
Jon M
2:19
Do you think the Royals will be adding and not subtracting at the deadline?
Jeffrey Todd
2:20
Ceiling would be very limited buying, I think. Still more likely they sell, but the division circumstances leave it an open question right now.

2:20
what should the rangers do to stay contenders this year?
Jeffrey Todd
2:21
Hope they get healthy and see internal improvements. I have a hard time seeing them making big additions.
Matt Garza
2:21
I'm not so awful that I'm totally un-tradeable, should Stearns consider a move for the future and try and trade me to let Woodruff take my spot?
Jeffrey Todd
2:22
Even putting aside Woodruff's injury, I think they have to hold onto the depth so long as they are in contention. It's one thing for a contender to do something like the Pirates did last year with Melancon -- getting a quality MLB asset with more control -- but quite another just to perform some salary trimming with a guy who could legitimately help you.
2:23
Not to say they couldn't also give Woodruff a shot -- clearly, that's what they intended.
Guy
2:23
When will the trades start? End of June? July?
Graham
2:24
Best realistic return you can come up with for Jaime + a Braves reliever?
Jeffrey Todd
2:25
If you're talking about one of their potentially useful but hardly dominant veteran relievers ... don't get your hopes up. You're talking about assets that contenders would be interested in mostly to shore up the depth down the stretch. While there are still some things to like about Garcia, he really isn't a playoff starter.
2:26
(Point being: contenders that reasonably expect postseason and need a 3/4 starter will probably look elsewhere. Garcia also isn't super cheap.)

2:26
Nunez trade value up. Cueto can still bring back pieces. Any chance Yankees take them as a package and Giants get Torres or Frazier back in a package?
Jeffrey Todd
2:27
No way. Yankees would only consider giving up those kinds of future pieces for a controllable starter.
Cueto remains a really funky trade chip, esp with his hiccups.
Ryan
2:28
Do you think Matt Chapman will make a big impact in Oakland?
Jeffrey Todd
2:29
He's going to strike out a ton. That really seems to limit his upside. Who knows, but it would be surprising if he's an impact player out of the gates or at all. More a solid prospect than a blue chipper.
Gary Geiger
2:29
If you were the Braves which catcher or third baseman would you persue either via trade or free agency?
Jeffrey Todd
2:30
Too soon, of course, but I really don't know that they are going to be in position to be making significant win-now moves. They have 3 rotation spots to fill again, remember, and it's still far from clear which if any of the prospects will be ready to take them.

Do u feel the Cardinals need to up grade in the bullpen
Jeffrey Todd
2:31
Most contenders could stand to improve upon a few relief slots. Many end up doing just that.
