Right now? No. By the end of the month? Maybe. They can wait and see how it all develops and decide at the last minute. Runaway division lead is a luxury.

I know the Rockies will eventually have to offer Arenado a huge deal to stay there, but is he becoming too pricey for the notoriously cheap owners?
Jeffrey Todd
3:01
I'm no Monfort apologist, but they have increased the payroll quite a bit in the last two years, so willingness to spend isn't really a fair complaint right now. Fortunately, they also bought out his 2018 at a (relatively) palatable price when they did his arb deal last year. He's still a relative bargain. No reason I see for payroll to drive a decision right now.
3:03
That said, a long-term deal is going to be immensely expensive for Arenado. I think I saw a media guess in the 6/100 type of range as a target for this coming winter ... I think that is way, way light. He's got lots of money already in his pocket and will be a 4+ player -- which is when Stanton signed his mega deal.

Arodys Vizcaino - pass through waivers?
Jeffrey Todd
3:05
Young affordable guy like that is probably claimed, I'd guess.
3:06
I mean ... obviously he'd be worth claiming. Question is more about how the process works in practice. I don't have a firm feel of exactly how many guys are claimed/pulled back and how many are claimed. But my sense is someone like that would get caught up in waivers.
Headly n Ellsbury
3:06
Can the yankees move these two players this offseason ?
Jeffrey Todd
3:08
Move them off the roster? Sure. But it's hard to see anybody taking the contracts ... Yanks would have to pay them down quite a bit. Even Headley - at $13MM on one year ... not a horribly burdensome sum, but given lack of demand at third we've seen in the market, I have a very hard time seeing a team taking that on.

So Amed Rosario was clocked Home to First in 4.00sec with a sprint speed of 31 ft/sec--thats 80 grade speed. Most scouts had him around 65/70.  If he truly has 80 grade speed, does this change his profile at all? maybe another .5 WAR/yr?
Jeffrey Todd
3:09
He hasn't stolen all that much in the minors, so that seems unlikely to change. Guess it could increase his overall baserunning ability beyond what's expected, but wouldn't scouts have picked up on that? Doesn't change his evaluation at SS, I'm sure. I'm not seeing much cause for a change of the general view on him.

Could you see someone wanting Nick Markakis this month?
Jeffrey Todd
3:10
There was no demand for corner OF ... don't see a marginal, highly paid one drawing much interest.
3:11
I mean, I get he's a respected veteran and all that. And who knows, maybe he's somehow more valuable than his numbers would suggest. But he hasn't slugged over .400 since 2012.

Could The Braves Toy Around with the idea of striking a trade with the Blue Jays for Jose Bautista To Go On 2 Month Stretch Run For The Wild Card

This is my fav question of the chat

A year ago I would agree with you that a discussion of Harper and Yanks would be "humorous," but that offseason is less than 18 months away and Bryce has had another strong season. I'm sure teams have already started planning, so what's wrong with discussing it?
Jeffrey Todd
3:13
It's fine to discuss, generally, I guess. But it's still too far off to be of real value. Yankees roster situation will likely look quite a bit different by then.

3:13
What's all the fuss surrounding Brandon Phillips? He doesn't want to play 3B, so why wouldn't the Braves just release him? Cincy is on the hook for most of his contract anyway.
Jeffrey Todd
3:13
Guess if he causes problems they will do just that.
Guatemala Royals
3:14
Hello from Guatemala!! Do you see the Royals picking up another SP and a SS this August?? Who?? Thanks for the chats!!
Jeffrey Todd
3:15
Thanks for following from Guatemala! I could still see a move for KC, esp as they'll have time to watch the market develop and see how the standings look. Man, they'd look so much better with an upgrade at short (Cozart), but I do understand it is hard for them to make that move.

Was Rich Hill an exception to "not their style" for the Dodgers....or did they "fall in love"?
Jeffrey Todd
3:16
Wasn't nine-figure deal.

What is a healthy Desclafani worth?
Jeffrey Todd
3:17
He's a really nice pitcher when healthy. Unfortunately, his trade value will be discounted even once he is back because of the troubles.

I'm contemplating a 5-year, $70 million extension for Didi. Do I go through with it?
Jeffrey Todd
3:17
Seems completely unnecessary. And a little expensive, though he has had a nice year.
3:18
I just don't see a compelling reason for the Yanks to get out ahead of things on a guy like Didi, who obviously isn't a star even at his best.
3:19
(Of course even as I am making things up about Amed Rosario's speed, above, he's drawing oohs and aahs for running like a gazelle. Ha.)

Cards fans are complaining about not making a move at the non-waiver deadline. Are they right to complain?
Jeffrey Todd
3:21
Eh, there was no obvious thing to be done. I really don't know that  there was all that much interest in Lynn -- certainly not a situation where you'd have thought they just passed up a chance at getting a serious prospect return. It wasn't clear at all they should be doing anything on the buy side, really.
3:22
If there's a complaint, it should be about some of the decisions that got  things to that point, perhaps. But I'm not sure there were real opportunities to be missed.
Couple more and I gotta run ...

Do I upset chemistry on the field when I get activated? Does Bellinger go back to LF, And where does CT3 go? Does Forsythe or Pederson go to the bench?
Jeffrey Todd
3:23
Dodgers are always moving guys around. Adding a respected veteran who's been there for years won't upset chemistry.
I expect they will mix and match as always. AGon will be limited and will mostly face righties, presumably. Joc will keep doing the same.
3:24
They are playing matchups. No everyday guys except those who show they are better options than possible platoon pairings.
Plus, with the division lead, they may as well just rest guys.

Can you see the Phillies going after some good free agents this off-season, like JD Martinez, and a couple starters and relievers... Arrieta, Cobb, Cueto, Darvish - Reed, Nicasio, Shaw.     It would make a good start for being a rebuilding team to a team working on contention...  Then hit it big in 2019.  thoughts?
