I'll start this week's chat off with apologies to Scooter Gennett for doubting his abilities, especially against lefties, seeing as he just launched a grand slam against Brad Hand.
Aaaaanyhow, drop some questions on me and we'll get started soon.
2:06
Back to back dingers ... maybe this Hand fellow just isn't all that good? Ha.
Okay off we go.

Twins will be a wild card team!!
Jeffrey Todd
2:07
Sure, why not? The AL Wild Card "race" is just such a mess.
2:08
It's so interesting to see the two extremes -- the NL is divided mostly into two poles, AL is so tightly bunched.

Does Verlander's performance last night increase his chances of getting traded?
Jeffrey Todd
2:09
Not one night, specifically. But generally, the fact that he has been shoving certainly makes it feel more likely to me. Reason: he was an ace last year, still has the stuff, and so this reinforces that. (I.e., it's not just a little hot streak.) And if that raises his trade value, it makes it easier for the Tigers to get what they feel they need to to trade him.
2:10
Unlike most trade scenarios, DET is not going to be rational, strictly speaking, from an on-field perspective. They have PR considerations that they value. The better he throws the likelier it is those can be accounted for.

Justin Upton, opting out or not?
Jeffrey Todd
2:12
I mean ... it's starting to move toward a yes. Definitely a distinct possibility. Have to wonder: even if he doesn't think he's going to blow the rest of his deal (4/88 or whatever it is) out of the water, maybe he values the chance to pick a destination again? Go to a contender.  Etc.
Dodgers
2:13
Should we have seen this coming? They did win 91 games with a ton of injuries last year...
Jeffrey Todd
2:14
Not 80-33, no. Projections like LAD quite a bit, but nowhere near a level that would have made that within the bounds of reasonable expectations.
2:15
There are always going to be some things that break right for a team to reach anything like this kind of level of performance. Chris Taylor? Alex Wood? Even Cody Bellinger (a young rookie)?
Scooter Gennett
2:16
No worries, I'll forgive you. However, I would like to play for a competitor. Do you think the Brewers might take me back?
Jeffrey Todd
2:16
Who knows, but that sort of thing isn't too typical. Angels, maybe, over the winter?
Toddrey Jeff
2:16
Who do you rank as the biggest breakout this year?
Jeffrey Todd
2:17
Would be hard to pick anyone other than Aaron Judge here.
Mets Mongo
2:18
Did the Mets get anything for Bruce?
Jeffrey Todd
2:18
Chris Antonetti says he has a chance to be a MLB reliever.
So  ... he's a guy you'd rather have in your system than not, but there's no indication at present that he's anything particularly special.
Brandon
2:19
Would it make sense for the Nats to claim JZimm? He was so dominant for them before.
Jeffrey Todd
2:19
Doesn't change how bad he has been ever since, unfortunately. And he's still unlikely to waive his no-trade protection.
(No, would be the direct answer to your question.)

How good is Vlad Jr really?
Jeffrey Todd
2:20
I have no earthly idea. But a kid with his obvious raw ability and genes and even more promising zone control than his dad, etc, etc ... seems pretty exciting.
Jerry DiPoto
2:20
WHO CAN I TRADE FOR THAT IS A STARTING PITCHER!?!?!?
Jeffrey Todd
2:21
Bear in mind, they just took on yet more money with Alonso ... who knows how much more they have to dip into?
Kevin
2:21
what can we expect from Rhys Hoskins the rest of the year?
Jeffrey Todd
2:22
Steamer projects: .264/.343/.500
Yah
I picked him up in the MLBTR fantasy league last night when I saw that. Pretty amazing projection for a pre-MLB guy.
We'll see, but the power and patience/contact he's shown this year are pretty danged interesting.
Spencer
2:23
Do you see the Blue Jays trading Estrada or do you think they'll try to resign him?
Jeffrey Todd
2:24
Don't seem to be mutually exclusive, and generally owners will probably be happy to find ways not to pay millions of dollars for a losing cause. Heck, offloading some of his salary for the rest of this year might make it so they can re-sign him.

Who now are the most likely candidates to get traded by the end of the month? And who is your world series pick?
Jeffrey Todd
2:24
See above link. But my pick for single most likely player to be traded is Rajai Davis.
2:25
Just no reason he shouldn't be on a contending roster. But he also could end up moving later in the month so the acquiring team doesn't have to worry as much about roster entanglements. (I.e., just before September roster expansion.)
