Jeffrey Todd

Hey all ... thanks for joining. Drop me some questions and I'll get to answering them in a few minutes.
Justin Verlander
2:08
Should I start looking for apartments in Houston?
Jeffrey Todd
2:08
Surely that power couple can do better than a boring apartment in Houston. How about a high-end ranch and a helicopter?
2:09
But no, I'd say to wait. Still definitely appears more like than not he stays.
Jays fan
2:09
Jays gonna trade anyone?
Jeffrey Todd
2:10
Indications are they will not. Though they did trade Smith and Liriano ... and I'm not sure I quite get the idea of a halfway process.
At least the Liriano deal would've been understandable even if they were just continuing to compete this year.
2:11
And by halfway, I don't mean they need to either go for it or tear it all down. I just mean, why not be willing to trade all your short-term assets, unless you really think it's going to hurt the bottom line? Hard to imagine keeping Estrada will result in a bigger gate than shedding his salary would save.
Nathan
2:11
do you think the phillies will go for Stanton
Jeffrey Todd
2:12
Well, it seems plausible to me that they will -- now and/or the offseason. Certainly have the payroll capacity and would love to have the star power. And they also probably have good trade pieces -- some prospects/young MLBers who have lost some of their sheen or aren't necessarily seen internally as future regulars -- to meet Miami's interest.
Bruce
2:13
Should Braves fans be discouraged by the performance of the young SPs that were so highly touted but getting beat up at the MLB level?
Jeffrey Todd
2:14
Not sure I see it quite that way. Their really intriguing guys aren't there yet. Folty and Newcomb are both producing at levels that are probably better than the mean projection would have been. The latter just has never yet shown an ability to overcome the walk problems.
2:15
Guys like Blair and Wisler ... I guess they are disappointing in some regard, though never seemingly had huge ceilings and could still be functional major leaguers.
If they come out of this year with two controllable, solid back-end starters established in the majors (Folty/Newc), that's not a bad result actually.
2:16
And I was neglecting Sims. Wasn't a whole lotta reason to expect much from him, and the sample is too small to judge just yet.

do the astros have enough? why haven't they mde any moves
Jeffrey Todd
2:16
I think they do have enough. We all know the pitching questions, but teams don't just luck their way into that sort of performance through 3/4 of the season.
2:18
Obviously you'd always like to have more, but it's understandable they were especially hesitant to deal guys they see as immediate contributors. I'd recommend listening to the Luhnow interview linked to here: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/08/luhnow-expectations-very-low-ad...

Arenado looking at 10/300 in 2019?
Jeffrey Todd
2:19
Seems a reasonable expectation at this point. Elite glove, huge power w/established overall offensive productivity, and he's only 26 right now.

How worried should the Rockies be about not winning a WC?
Jeffrey Todd
2:20
Worried? No reason to worry. Have to keep grinding out Ws but they are in the driver's seat. Would be nice to earn a home game for the WC play-in, too.
Let me take this moment, too, to say heck yeah Chad Bettis. He could be a big re-addition.
O's in MT
2:21
What can the Orioles do with Chris Davis? He is horrendous at the plate anymore
Jeffrey Todd
2:21
Wait and hope.
Sterling, VA
2:21
Hey Homie!  Hearing no word on Madsen's finger thingy...have you?  Does this make Mike look for some insurance?
Jeffrey Todd
2:22
Sterl, represent.
2:23
Haven't seen anything definitive on it. I don't really expect it'll change anything unless they get an indication he's a real question to be healthy come October. Even then, there's depth -- esp if Solis is able to keep performing.
GoodWin
2:23
Where does Brian Goodwin fit into the Nationals future plans with Harper, Michael A Taylor, Adam Eaton, and Victor Robles
Jeffrey Todd
2:24
As of right now, I'd anticipate Taylor/Goodwin platooning in CF next year with Harper and Eaton in the corners. Robles could push for a role as soon as 2018, sure, but you can't count on that. And Harper is a FA thereafter. So they'll wait and see.
2:25
It is interesting to note that the Nats ought to be set all over the diamond, except perhaps behind the plate. (Could be Severino/Wieters or they could add someone else to go with Wieters, assuming he stays.) Whatever resources they decide to use (salary/prospects) will likely go to the pitching staff -- could look at a starter and obviously the bullpen will again be a focus.
Jay
2:26
Should the rebuilding Padres make more of an effort (or lack thereof) to tank next year considering they likely won't get a top pick after this season?
Jeffrey Todd
2:28
I think they probably will and should stay the course and see what happens. It's all about the rotation, right? They are just going to let the position players continue to develop. As regards pitching, it probably won't make sense to spend big on a FA, so they can go hunting for value again. No particular reason that I can see for them to try to ramp things up or to try to artificially hold down the record just for draft position. Also, at some point, you just have to win some games to boost revenue.

Give me an optimistic view of the reds pitching staff.....
Jeffrey Todd
2:28
That Luis Castillo fella looks really interesting!
So there's that.
Andrew
2:29
Even with Chase Anderson coming back, should the Brewers still look for one more starter to round out the rotation for the stretch run? Suter on the DL, Garza/Davies have been inconsistent, not really sure what Woodruff is.
Jeffrey Todd
2:30
Just not sure how plausible that is. Who would they realistically target? Doubtful the price on Verlander isn't going to be what MIL wants to pay. Santana isn't going to be achievable. Estrada isn't happening for the Brewers.
And they don't need any old guy to hold down a rotation spot. It's worth continuing to look, but it's just hard to imagine a decent value coming together.

Zack Cozart to KC for a competitive balance round pick to be named later (after they can be traded in Dec.)? Who hangs up first?
