I TOTALLY called that. Let me just look and see where I can find it ... hmmm ...
Ah that post is still in draft form. I never published it! Darn!
2:56
Hey, crazy things happen every year. Obviously he can't keep up the .400ish BABIP, but the Dodgers clearly did well there.
2:58
I am always interested, though, in noting the critical importance of those types of semi-fluky things in driving performances over expectations. When you can fill in for guys who fell short or got hurt with players who perform even better than the guys they replace it makes an enormous difference. Teams are certainly always trying to put themselves in that kind of position, but there's some luck of the draw.
2:59
Since I pay close attention to the Nats, that has stood out to me there as well. Was part of their disappointing 2013 season. This year, you have guys like Lind, Taylor, Goodwin that have produced despite being seen as marginal players entering the year.

There is talk in Seattle that the M's need to try to move Kyle Seager this off-season for a starting pitching. I don't like the idea as he is a excellent 3B, solid bat with +power, and has a reasonable contract, but what type of return could the team get for him?
Jeffrey Todd
3:00
Like, trade him for MLB-level starter/s? Seems unlikely -- we rarely see that kind of parallel deal. There'd have to be quite some surplus from another org for a quality pitcher on a still-sizable contract to become available.
And who would the M's replace him with, if they are (as you seem to posit) still trying to compete?

Lance Lynn looks like a nice pickup for someone in the offseason. What do you expect the contract to look like?
Jeffrey Todd
3:02
Results are there but peripherals just aren't. I am expecting something like 4/60, though I suppose it's possible the market could drive north on him if multiple teams really want him. Certainly has always generated quality numbers at the end of the day, but right now he's on the friendly side of the BABIP gods.

Should the Dodgers sell high on Austin Barnes? Seems like his cheap contract and great production could be turned into a very nice return.
Jeffrey Todd
3:04
I don't really see the Dodgers moving a versatile, useful, cheap player just for a prospect return when they don't have any logjam to clear. Grandal hasn't been at his best and is a FA after 2018 if I'm not mistaken.

I'm glad you remember reading that.

What does the Cardinal back up catcher, Kelly, bring back in return?
Jeffrey Todd
3:06
Don't think he's going anywhere.
3:07
But he'd be strongly pursued, same basic reasoning as above (re Realmuto) ... I mean, hopes that he becomes that.

Thanks for the shout out! Glad someone is paying attention to me.

Wahoowa!
(He's a UVA guy, as am I.)
Wild Horse Puig
3:08
Have I forced my way into the Dodgers' long-term plans after next season, when my contract expires?
Jeffrey Todd
3:09
I don't see the Dodgers treating Puig as they did Jansen, say,  as a player they'll sort of not worry strictly about valuations for in an extension/free agency scenario.
(If you can make sense of that sentence.)
3:11
Hard to know what things will look like by that point, of course, but ... particularly given the clear emphasis they put on the clubhouse cohesion, will they want to keep hoping they can keep him in line? Not sure at all about that. It's all guesswork at this point, but I doubt he stays past next year.

Is Ronald Acuna the "Cody Bellinger of 2018"?
Jeffrey Todd
3:13
Well, he'd be even younger, but obviously there's plenty of reason to be excited. I definitely don't think they'll put him on the 40-man this year, though, and have a hard time believing he'd break camp on the MLB roster. Much more likely he'd be on Bellinger's general timeline if he mauls Triple-A between now and then.
(That is to say, spend at least a month or two at Gwinnett to open the year ... team will assess his readiness and MLB need as it goes.)

You're correct on Grandal being a FA after '18.  Barnes likely is seen as their next catcher after that, although I suppose you never know if they could re-up Grandal.  Team loves him, works with pitchers really well and is possibly the best pitch-framer in all of baseball.
Jeffrey Todd
3:14
See? I just keep calling things right w/r/t the Dodgers.
As regards Grandal, even if he were retained for another few years, wouldn't be cause to shop Barnes, of course.
(Not that "Dodger Fan" was suggesting it, but to finish the thought from earlier.)

Can you see the Mets making Steven Matz available this offseason? He is hardly a picture of good health, but I can't see the Mets banking on ALL of the starters coming back again next year.
Jeffrey Todd
3:16
Which is why they have to keep Matz and just see what happens. Hard to sell low on his talent. Let him (and the others) rest up over the offseason.

Worse contract at this point: Miguel Cabrera or Albert Pujols?
Jeffrey Todd
3:17
Woof. Obviously you have to take Miggy the player at this point, but ...
3:18
I don't know the exact numbers. I'm guessing Miggy is owed something like 100 mil more than Pujols is in total $ the rest of the way? Have a hard time believing it's worth that extra cash to take a shot on him returning (and maintaining) as a top-level hitter.

Do you think the braves can pull off a trade for Anthony rendon
