WHOA
So, the August deadline is proving to be a doozy thus far. Sorry for the late start -- had to help Steve write up some of the stories.
On that note, I may have to break away briefly during the chat, but will give a heads up if that happens.
For now: questions!
Curious George

Chances of Justin Upton staying with the Angels and not opting out?
Jeffrey Todd
2:23
I think increasingly pretty low. Not sure if they were on his no-trade list (he had 20 clubs to list), but it's not like  he's just totally settled in with an organization. Plus, he's an east coast guy.
2:24
(From the east coast, that is. Just saying: not like there's a clear geographical match.)
Chandler
2:24
Why would the Angels give up Maybin essentially for free to a division rival?
Jeffrey Todd
2:24
Not a ton of choice, it seems. Claimed on waivers and they were probably committed to moving the salary with Upton coming on board.
2:25
Anyway, their concern is getting the wild card.
Gregory
2:25
Whats your opinion on the Mike Leake deal from a Cardinals perspective?
Jeffrey Todd
2:25
I think it makes pretty good sense. They have good reason to like the young arms, from all I can tell, and it allows a salary reallocation. Slight ding to chances of making the postseason this year, but ... yeah, that seems fairly unlikely anyway.

2:26
Do you think Miguel Gonzalez gets traded in the next 8.5 hours?
Jeffrey Todd
2:26
Just not sure there's a contender that has a clear enough need for rotation depth to push for him. But it's certainly plausible.
2:27
Not clear how CWS feels: could decide they don't want to give up a palatable veteran for a marginal return, or wish him the best with a contender and get what they can.
Mike
2:27
Could the angels make another move still? Pitching?
Jeffrey Todd
2:27
I hear Miguel Gonzalez is available!
2:28
The Upton thing is interesting and perhaps sort of a unique situation. Were able to bump Maybin's salary and get a guy who gives them a jolt on offense. And obv theyd be comfortable if he opts in. But would they give up value or take on even more money for an arm? Not clear.

Any chance Verlander goes to Boston?
Jeff
2:29
Will the Cubs land Verlander before the deadline?
Tim
2:29
think Verlander comes to Houston this evening? or even tomorrow?  :)
Jeffrey Todd
2:30
Ummm ... well, let's see. Boston would blow past the luxury cap by adding him. The Cubs still could but it has never been made totally clear just how interested  they are in taking that salary. (OTOH, he'd kind of step into the Lackey zone of a  high AAV, short-term guy.) And we know all about the Astros. Unless they or DET have blinked, talks were stagnant.
2:31
Notable, too, that some teams might be extra willing to part with prospects that will clog their 40-man. But those guys can't be dealt in August (presuming they'd get caught on waivers). Makes it harder, potentially.
2:32
Bottom line: Tigers seem to be pushing to see if something makes sense. We don't know if they are going to then take the best offer, or if they are really just hoping the deadline creates enough pressure to get a team to boost its offer.

I heard from the rumor mill I am potentially going to Detroit in a blockbuster deal for Verlander. Is this just a false rumor?
Jeffrey Todd
2:33
See, there's a 40-man guy that almost certainly can't be discussed right now.
Bryce
2:33
Where does Big Game James fit into the White Sox plans for next year?
Jeffrey Todd
2:33
On the roster so long as they need innings and can tolerate it. He has been pretty bad. Man, that trade ...
Dodgers
2:34
Have the Dodgers peaked too early ?
Jeffrey Todd
2:34
I don't think I buy into such a concept.
Avila
2:34
Should I cut my losses and release vmart this offseason so miggy can dh and more kids can play
Jeffrey Todd
2:35
Nah. Give him a chance to perform, hope he does  and turns into a trade chip. Meanwhile, let guys like Castellanos and Candelario feel the burn of needing to earn playing time.

2:35
What are the D'backs chances of keeping JD Martinez?
Jeffrey Todd
2:35
Do not really see them adding another monster contract with the Greinke deal on the books some extension candidates not yet taken care of.
2:36
books *and* some
Stephen Smith
2:36
Was Upton really a position of need / does it make them THAT much better? I personally do not think so.
Jeffrey Todd
2:36
Well, Maybin is more valuable to a team that can use him in center. As corner pieces, Upton is far and away the better hitter.

The deadline is midnight eastern
Jeffrey Todd
2:37
It is indeed. I mean deadline day. Hope you are hanging in there in Houston!
