This is a great mailbag question! Please send it in there!
(Odubel Herrera is hard to top as a recent R5, tho)

Can a player with minor league options be taken off the 40 man roster?
Jeffrey Todd
2:32
Yes, but you have to expose him to waivers.
Cubs Lovin
2:32
Do you see the Cubs making Wade Davis a contract offer before he hits free agency?
Jeffrey Todd
2:32
Not really.
2:33
He'll get a qualifying offer, though, so that will give them some time to talk before he formally becomes a free agent.
Chandler
2:33
How can Robles make the Nationals' post season roster if he wasn't on the 40 man?
Jeffrey Todd
2:34
Doesn't matter, it's whether the player was in the org.
NotANatsFan
2:36
Any chance the Nats overtake the Dodgers for #1 record? Only down 7 games, Dodgers slumping.
Jeffrey Todd
2:36
That's a lot to ask.

Jason answered a question similar to Bruce's question yesterday only about the Reds. He thinks we are a year or two away.  I have a feeling you don't agree.
Jeffrey Todd
2:37
Well, they need a lot of pitching questions to be answered. But there's talent there, some payroll space perhaps if things begin to look up, and many/most regulars accounted for on the position player side of things.
2:38
So ... I wouldn't really see Cinci as being on a different timeline from the Braves. Never know if it'll work out, of course, but bear in mind that the two clubs have the same record. And it was the Braves that added 3 fairly expensive starters last winter, while the Reds rolled the dice (and lost) on what they had.

Castro, Betances and Chance Adams for Jose Altuve. Fair deal?
Jeffrey Todd
2:39
Nope

Will Machado be extended
Jeffrey Todd
2:39
Don't think so, myself.

J.D. Martinez has "loved" his time in AZ and would be open to staying there.  What's your projection for his next contract?  Cespedesesque 4/$110 million?  Outside of trading Greinke or increasing their payroll massively, I see no way of the D-Backs resigning him.
Jeffrey Todd
2:41
He's been there a month, so while I don't doubt that's true, it's not as if he has put roots down. I don't see why he wouldn't have as good or better a FA case as Cespy. And I agree that ARZ would rightly be hesitant to make that kind of commitment, esp with the Greinke contract on the books. And it will be tough for them to move that, even after his strong season -- all the more so if they make and succeed in the postseason.
2:42
So ... lots of things pushing back against a deal there, IMO, but can't be ruled out. We said the same thing about Cespedes after he was first dealt to the Mets!

What could the Phils get in a trade for Tommy Joseph?
Jeffrey Todd
2:42
I remember answering similar questions about Matt Adams. Don't have very high expectations.
Dorie
2:43
Who do you see at the top free agent closer this off season?
Jeffrey Todd
2:43
Davis and Holland. I don't think either will come near Chapman/Jansen money, but both could meet or exceed Melancon.
Pine tar

Cargo looking at 1/10-12 in 2018?
Jeffrey Todd
2:45
Yup, if a team is willing to stake that much of a gamble. Hard for me to see how he gets multiple years, really, though I guess crazier things have happened.
Patty O'Furniture
2:46
Should Atlanta go after Alex Cobb?
Jeffrey Todd
2:47
Signing a guy like that ought to be under consideration, but I'm not sure it's worthwhile. I mean, at least the guys they added for '17 were only one-year commitments. But Cubb and Lynn and then a number of others (on the lower side) could be looking at 10 or 12 mil for multiple seasons. That begins to clog payroll. And it poses the question: do you really think you're ready now to contend? Because that's got to be the chief motivator for signing veteran FAs.
Adam Jupiter Preller
2:47
Should I have traded Brad Hand? Jhoulys Chacin?
Jeffrey Todd
2:48
Can't say as to Hand, since we really don't know what was offered. Generally, sure, they should've been willing (and no doubt were), though I guess at some point you have to have your standards.
2:49
As for Chacin, I get what Preller said. Volume prospects are but so useful, and if all that's offered are players you really don't believe in, then why bother? Keep the guy who's pitching pretty well and is quite cheap.
Miller
2:49
Would jurikson profar be a fit for a rebuilding tigers team?
Jeffrey Todd
2:50
It's the right type of team, sure, and I guess there could be room -- esp if they trade both Kinsler and Iglesias. Hard to know what DET thinks of Profar, but you're on the right track at least there.
2:51
Padres, Blue Jays, White Sox could all make some sense on paper.
Atlanta Braves
2:51
do you like pho?
Jeffrey Todd
2:51
I'm not sure "like" adequately conveys my feelings for that dish. It's the best.
Justino
2:52
Does Ichiro's $2M option for 2018 get picked up by Miami? If not, could this be the end? Say it ain't so.
Jeffrey Todd
2:52
Nope. And ... could be the end, unless another team kind of likes the idea of the novelty/quiet leadership thing.
Or he could go back to NPB, I suppose.
