Ahoy.
(Yeah I just said that.)
Thanks for joining! Go ahead and drop some questions and we'll get rolling shortly ...

What are the chances Todd Frazier is a Brave in 2018?
Jeffrey Todd
2:08
I think that's plausible, sure. They have showed they are willing to spend on mid-range veterans and I don't think he'll command a massive or super-lengthy deal. Also not sure how much other interest there'll be.
Hard to give odds, of course. In some special circumstances there's a really clean match. Here, it just looks like one of the likelier possible destinations. But we don't know specifically if ATL likes him.

Should the Mets be targeting Bryan Shaw?
Jeffrey Todd
2:10
Not sure the Mets will really be in position to go out and target certain relievers, or that Shaw would be a guy you'd really do that with. He's a very good pitcher, of course. But the Mets have a fair number of possible needs and may want to achieve some value on some rather than targeting one guy and going and getting him. Not to say Shaw won't become the guy, but there's nothing that I can gather that'd make him specifically a target.

was this season just a fluke or a downward trend for me
Jeffrey Todd
2:12
I think it's mostly a situation where a pretty good but not great pitcher has had some up years and some down in the results department. We should still anticipate he'll perform at his talent level, which is probably as a fairly clearly above average (or mid-rotation) starter. No ace, but still quite a useful pitcher.

Which cardinal outfielder(s) get dealt this winter?  And will they get a true MOTO Bat?
Jeffrey Todd
2:14
That's just so hard to guess right now. But I do think there are enough guys -- and enough on the 40-man -- that it's a logjam that warrants some clearing. Sure makes that Piscotty extension look questionable. I don't think Fowler or Pham will be moved, but otherwise I guess nothing is nailed down.
2:15
As for acquiring a new hitter ... I just don't know where they'd put one unless we are talking about some pretty dramatic restructuring. They do have some interesting young players who have MLB experience -- a few of the OFers, even Aledmys Diaz -- that could go in a deal for a shorter-term vet. And I guess Carpenter could be moved off of first, though perhaps that's the best spot for Martinez anyway ....
2:16
.... gets complicated, is the point. I guess I'd expect they will mostly focus on deciding which internal guys they want to keep and then look for ways to improve the pen. Might explore interesting trade scenarios for notable hitters, but I'd be surprised if they just go out and sign a big bat.

Who do the Brewers need to add this offseason to make themselves next year's NL Central frontrunners? They certainly aren't that far behind the Cubs as is.
Jeffrey Todd
2:18
Unfortunately, the Nelson surgery news leaves a void in the rotation. I realize they have options there, but if they really wanted to push the pedal down, that's where they'd target. Could also pick up some relief depth and take advantage of the glut in the market for second basemen to install a quality veteran there. (Could bring back Walker, for instance.)

Who are some realistic ace/2 hole guys available this offseason on the trade market?
Jeffrey Todd
2:19
Chris Archer can be had. Probably Michael Fulmer, too. Just be prepared to give up an absolute ton, because there will be so much competition and interest.
2:20
Otherwise ... I just don't know what pitcher anywhere near that caliber is going to be dealt. Blue Jays aren't going to be dealing Stroman or Sanchez. Mets won't be shipping out deGrom or Syndergaard. Phillies probably won't really listen on Nola, though I guess that's at least possible. Etc.
2:21
It may seem like I took that question as looking at more controllable pitchers, but actually there aren't any short-term guys I see that'd likely be available. Could change if a team sees an opportunity, but looks to me like the action will be in free agency for older pitchers.

What would you do with the Mets this offseason? I think they should roll with Conforto/Cespedes in RF/LF and platoon Nimmo/Lagares in CF. Use any funds (LOL Wilpons) on sorting out 3B, the bullpen, a reliable veteran starter or two (200 IP) and a new manager/medical staff?
Jeffrey Todd
2:22
Ed, are you sitting down?
I don't know quite how to say this, but ... Conforto ... man
2:23
Look, he could bounce back well and relatively early. But I don't think anyone is penciling him in for 600 plate appearances. And there's real risk in his situation.
2:25
So, the Mets could add a corner OF piece. Perhaps a righty bat that could also slide into some time at first if Conforto returns but Dom Smith struggles or warrants a platoon mate? Adding to the infield still makes sense to me, though they can mix and match with what they have (assuming they retain Cabrera). Upgrading pen and adding a starter make sense, but they will need to balance level of commitment to pitchers they'd likely prefer to get on short-term deals.
2:26
Also, one big way teams get decent value on pitchers is by promising  them opportunities. Can Mets promise a rotation spot? Dunno. Mets will be one of the most interesting teams to watch this winter.

2:26
Thoughts on the Clayton Richard & Marco Estrada extensions so close to free agency?
Jeffrey Todd
2:27
Like them both. Richard is a cheap rotation piece who could also function in the pen. Could turn into a trade asset, too.
2:28
Estrada is a really nice get on a one-year deal of basically any size. There's no way the Jays would've done as well in free agency.
Sid Down
2:28
If the braves fire Snitker and go outside the system who would YOU hire?
Jeffrey Todd
2:29
No idea. I know it's manager speculation time of year, but boy there is a lot of bluster on that topic. We can always look at in-game decisions, but it's basically impossible to assess the bulk of the skippers' job.
2:30
We aren't in clubhouse. Even playing time and bullpen things ... these days, that is (or should be) decided in close conjunction with the front office. Obviously managers have varying amounts of independence, and should be evaluate on their judgment, but it's just so hard to know how they actually have performed without knowing how much was done due to FO. Even harder to judge how a certain candidate would do as a manager.

Now that the Padres extended Richard, do you think they might try shopping Perdomo?
Jeffrey Todd
2:31
No way, unrelated.
Mark
2:31
Will Avisail Garcia or Leury Garcia be traded this offseason? What kind of return could the White Sox expect?
Jeffrey Todd
2:32
I don't expect it. If Avi can maintain this, he's much more valuable than whatever Chi could get for him this winter, when the market will be skeptical. And Leury isn't all that interesting a player, if we're being honest. He makes sense right where he is for the time being.
2018 Giants
2:33
Do you think the Giants have a realistic shot at both Martinez and Moustakas? Or are we lucky to get just one?
Jeffrey Todd
2:33
I would be very surprised. That'd be a huge commitment for a team that is already over-extended with veteran contracts.
2:34
Really, I don't know that going after either of them-- or any other big-$ FA -- is the answer.

Was I secretly the best deadline pickup?
